WASHINGTON — Joe Lieberman is fast becoming the Democrats' public enemy No. 1.

The four-term Connecticut senator, who came tantalizingly close to being Al Gore's vice president in 2000, not only has been campaigning for his pal, presumed Republican nominee John McCain, now he's publicly criticizing the Democrats' standard-bearer, Barack Obama. Lieberman has strayed before, most notably switching from Democrat to independent in 2006 to hold onto his Senate seat after a Democratic primary loss.

But the latest betrayal has upset Democrats, who often answer in clipped but polite tones when asked about Lieberman. The reason: The independent still caucuses with the Democrats on most issues except the Iraq war, and he holds their slim political majority in his hands.

"There's a commonly held hope that he's not going to be transformed into an attack dog for Republicans," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., an Obama supporter.

Lieberman has wasted no time in questioning Obama's positions on Iran and Israel, two topics on which Lieberman and McCain agree. Just one day after Obama clinched his party's nomination, Lieberman joined Republicans on a McCain campaign teleconference call assailing Obama following his foreign policy address to a leading Jewish group.

Lieberman accused Obama of blaming U.S. policies for "essentially sort of strengthening" Iran.

"If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way," he said. "It is not because of what we have done in Iraq. It is because Iran is a fanatical terrorist, expansionist state."

Later that day, during a budget vote in the Senate, Obama led Lieberman to a corner of the Senate floor for a pointed private conversation. Without elaborating, Obama told reporters the chat was about politics. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had a similar private conversation with Lieberman.

For his part, Lieberman said he assured Obama he would avoid personal attacks.

"I said, and we agreed, that any time I get out there mostly I'm going to be talking positively about John McCain _ and anytime I would take issue with Barack Obama, it would never be personal because I have the highest regard for him personally," he said.

Still, Democrats were irked. Lieberman seemed to be breaking new ground _ shifting gears from simply promoting McCain to taking shots at Obama.

"I'm glad that Barack Obama had a direct conversation with Joe," Sen. Dick Durbin, Obama's fellow Illinois senator, told reporters. "I hope that Joe will realize that even though he's a friend of John McCain's and feels differently on the war, there are so many other issues Barack stands for that have been a part of Joe's career."

Lieberman's Connecticut colleague, Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, said he's heard McCain talk about keeping a civil tone to the campaign.

"It might be a good message for him to convey to his supporters," said Dodd, also an Obama supporter.

Obama had backed Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut. After he lost to Ned Lamont, an anti-war candidate, Lieberman defied party leaders and ran as an independent in the general election. Leading Democrats _ Obama, Dodd and Kerry among them _ then backed Lamont. Lieberman was re-elected with support from the GOP, including praise from the White House and fundraising help from prominent Republicans.

Oddly, Lieberman befriended and dispensed advice to Obama when the Illinois senator arrived in Washington in 2005.

"We have established a very good relationship," Lieberman says. "I have a lot of affection for him."

Call it Lieberman's version of tough love.

The Connecticut lawmaker is willing to speak at the Republican convention this summer if McCain asks. He also has been mentioned as a potential McCain running mate.

Democrats have reason to tolerate Lieberman's actions. If he were to caucus with the GOP, the balance of power in the narrowly divided Senate would slip away, especially with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., battling brain cancer. Democrats need Lieberman to maintain their 51-49 Senate majority.

Beyond Iraq, Lieberman tends to vote with Democrats on major issues.

"Joe and I have known each other 40 years," said Dodd. "On almost every issue, Joe is a mainstream Democrat."

There is speculation that if Democrats bolster their Senate majority this fall, they could seek payback by stripping Lieberman of his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairmanship.

While there's no serious talk afoot about punishing Lieberman, Kerry said, "I can't tell you what happens next year."

That statement says all that is wrong with the dems. Where have Kerry, and Reid and all the other dems been as lie-berman trashes Obama and the Democratic Party? He already IS the republiCON attack dog, and he has been for months. Just what does it take for these idiotic democrats to wake up and see lie-berman for what he is; a republicon who occasionally votes democratic on small inconsequential issues while voting republiCON on all the big important issues.

I'll never forgive the state of Connecticut for voting this traitor back in office. They're almost as low as Texans.

Joe "It's all about Me" Lieberman. Who is he pandering to this week? The man is a total disgrace to politics, no wonder he's on the side of slime and fabrications. He answers the question, "why would anyone go into politics?" For the perks, benefits and the ideology of special interests. We hate you Joe. We just wish there was some way of stripping you of your govt. benefits.

Since the Democrats don't have a veto-proof majority, I can't see why they need Mole Man for anything. He's already outside the tent pissing in, so what good is he?

Don't they keep the chairmanships and majorities of the committees right now because they are a slim majority of one? The Dems need to pick up 9 seats to get a veto-proof majority, so 10 if they also want to kick out Lieberman. This is unlikely so if they pick up 5 or 6 Senate seats as predicted, I say kick him out.

Need Liberman?

I hate to point out the obvious but on most of the major votes, the Dems are "losing" anyway because they don't have a clean 60 vote majority. Having a 51-49 split is pretty useless if any issue of contention you will lose anyway.

I say cut Liberman lose. At this point, nothing extraordinary will come out of Congress before January anyway with so many lame-ducks and the Senate in virtual gridlock with or without Liberman. Time for the Democrats to start showing "tough love" because the myth of Liberman the "little i" independent is gone. In most of his actions he has not only become a Republican, he is the standard bearer for their POTUS nominee.

Joe Lieberman had inside information concerning the Iraq war.. What the American public is learning about the propaganda, lies, and conspiracy leading up to the Iraq war, Senator Lieberman knew before McClellan book was published. Phillip Zelikow, Bush adviser and member of the 9/11 commission, said that the Iraq war was launched to protect Israel. Yes the Iraq war had nothing to do with WMDs, advancing democracy, or about oil, the Iraq is all about Israel. Lieberman chief goal is to promote Jewish and Israel interest. Lieberman put Israel interest ahead of America interest. America has lost over 4000 men and women in Iraq protecting Israel. Lieberman, Bush and the whole Iraq war conspiracy gang should be tired for treason.

If the Iraq war was launched to protect Israel, we really screwed that up. The Israeli mitatry is the finest in the Middle East, and probably in the top five in the world. The neo-cons big plan was to insert a Western style democracy in a region where it hasn’t existed before. Saddam was a toothless dictator with a wrecked undisciplined military, which provided a firewall between Israel and Iran, now American troops and contractors are the firewall and Iraq is a vortex for every jihadi in the Middle East. With help like that Israel would be better off if the US and the neo-cons minded their own business.

By the way Joe Lieberman is not only betraying his colleges in the Senate he is betraying his state and his country.

I've come to similar conclusions, coollbreezz when I read that Clinton hadn't read the Intelligence Reports before voting to support the war but had relied on "advisers" I went looking to see who these advisers were. Mark Penn's name kept cropping up so I researched him and then things started making a little more sense why Hillary won't apologise or admit her wrong for the war and all the American deaths and over 2 trillion dollars in war debt.

Mark Penn makes his money supporting Isreal's best interests as a lobbyist and Clinton has publically defended lobbyists as "people too". The adage "follow the money" still holds true but it's this researching that the average voter "hard working, white, hard working voters" don't spend their time doing because.....well, because they are working hard maybe 2 jobs each trying to keep their heads above water all the while being pandered to by unscrupulous politicians.

I use to like old Joe, but not anymore. He twists and turns so many times, just like his face. I don't like the man anymore. He's not going to make me vote for the person he's currently sucking up to. Hell no!!

"Iran is a fanatical terrrorist, expansionist state." -- I think our great Zionist has reversed the truth a bit. It has been about 250 years since Iran has attacked any other country. The most recent war they fought was a defensive war against Iraq when Saddam was our great friend in the region and we egged him on to it! (By ther way, Saddam never changed but his usefulness did!)
But I can think of another state in that region, founded upon terrorism, expanded through wars of choice, and constant violators of international laws concerning the confiscation of property in occupied lands, torture, and daily denial of ordinary human rights. Yes, and that state is fanatically served by the likes of Lieberman (Likud, CT) and other misleaders of our own nation.

Wow... a voice of truth among the MSM Parrots! Way to go FlowerGirl! Another little known fact (in the US anyways) is that Iran has offered many time to normalize relations with the US, wants peace, wants normalized trade and has made many offers of assistance to the US in Iraq and Afghanistan. For all the 'problems' Israel has with Iran, if Israel made a just peace with the Palestinians, it would have a just peace with Iran and it's Arab neighbours... but Israel doesn't want peace... it wants all the territory of Gaza and the WB. Plus is wants most of Lebanon as the Litani river is a very coveted chunk of property for the water parched Middle east... Iran is NOT the dangerous rogue state... that honour falls to Israel and the United States.

Excellent post, FlowerGirl! It's eye opening to see some citizen videos of this, "state in that region, founded upon terrorism, expanded through wars of choice, and constant violators of international laws concerning the confiscation of property in occupied lands, torture, and daily denial of ordinary human rights" that you speak of, FlowerGirl.

I want my country on the side of "right" no matter who it happens to be, no matter how much money their lobbyist throw at us! If you didn't hear me I'll repeat it because I'm willing to go-to-the-mat on that one. :(

Come November, the dems won't need Joe. They will have gotten a larger majority and the tie breaking vote old Joe wields with impunity won't be worth anything. Lieberman's best bet is a McCain win, in order to stay relevant. History is marching past Joe Lieberman. And he's scared.

If Lieberman has been voting with the Democratic platform for forty years, why is he now supporting McCain, another Bush lite? I think they just get too chummy in the congress with each other. It becomes a giant club of good old boys, slapping each other on the back and going to parties together.
