WASHINGTON — Joe Lieberman is fast becoming the Democrats' public enemy No. 1.

The four-term Connecticut senator, who came tantalizingly close to being Al Gore's vice president in 2000, not only has been campaigning for his pal, presumed Republican nominee John McCain, now he's publicly criticizing the Democrats' standard-bearer, Barack Obama. Lieberman has strayed before, most notably switching from Democrat to independent in 2006 to hold onto his Senate seat after a Democratic primary loss.

But the latest betrayal has upset Democrats, who often answer in clipped but polite tones when asked about Lieberman. The reason: The independent still caucuses with the Democrats on most issues except the Iraq war, and he holds their slim political majority in his hands.

"There's a commonly held hope that he's not going to be transformed into an attack dog for Republicans," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., an Obama supporter.

Lieberman has wasted no time in questioning Obama's positions on Iran and Israel, two topics on which Lieberman and McCain agree. Just one day after Obama clinched his party's nomination, Lieberman joined Republicans on a McCain campaign teleconference call assailing Obama following his foreign policy address to a leading Jewish group.

Lieberman accused Obama of blaming U.S. policies for "essentially sort of strengthening" Iran.

"If Israel is in danger today, it's not because of American foreign policy, which has been strongly supportive of Israel in every way," he said. "It is not because of what we have done in Iraq. It is because Iran is a fanatical terrorist, expansionist state."

Later that day, during a budget vote in the Senate, Obama led Lieberman to a corner of the Senate floor for a pointed private conversation. Without elaborating, Obama told reporters the chat was about politics. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had a similar private conversation with Lieberman.

Story continues below

For his part, Lieberman said he assured Obama he would avoid personal attacks.

"I said, and we agreed, that any time I get out there mostly I'm going to be talking positively about John McCain _ and anytime I would take issue with Barack Obama, it would never be personal because I have the highest regard for him personally," he said.

Still, Democrats were irked. Lieberman seemed to be breaking new ground _ shifting gears from simply promoting McCain to taking shots at Obama.

"I'm glad that Barack Obama had a direct conversation with Joe," Sen. Dick Durbin, Obama's fellow Illinois senator, told reporters. "I hope that Joe will realize that even though he's a friend of John McCain's and feels differently on the war, there are so many other issues Barack stands for that have been a part of Joe's career."

Lieberman's Connecticut colleague, Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd, said he's heard McCain talk about keeping a civil tone to the campaign.

"It might be a good message for him to convey to his supporters," said Dodd, also an Obama supporter.

Obama had backed Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut. After he lost to Ned Lamont, an anti-war candidate, Lieberman defied party leaders and ran as an independent in the general election. Leading Democrats _ Obama, Dodd and Kerry among them _ then backed Lamont. Lieberman was re-elected with support from the GOP, including praise from the White House and fundraising help from prominent Republicans.

Oddly, Lieberman befriended and dispensed advice to Obama when the Illinois senator arrived in Washington in 2005.

"We have established a very good relationship," Lieberman says. "I have a lot of affection for him."

Call it Lieberman's version of tough love.

The Connecticut lawmaker is willing to speak at the Republican convention this summer if McCain asks. He also has been mentioned as a potential McCain running mate.

Democrats have reason to tolerate Lieberman's actions. If he were to caucus with the GOP, the balance of power in the narrowly divided Senate would slip away, especially with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., battling brain cancer. Democrats need Lieberman to maintain their 51-49 Senate majority.

Beyond Iraq, Lieberman tends to vote with Democrats on major issues.

"Joe and I have known each other 40 years," said Dodd. "On almost every issue, Joe is a mainstream Democrat."

There is speculation that if Democrats bolster their Senate majority this fall, they could seek payback by stripping Lieberman of his Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairmanship.

While there's no serious talk afoot about punishing Lieberman, Kerry said, "I can't tell you what happens next year."

I used to live near Holyjoe in New Haven,CT, and would often see him jogging in Edgewood park. This was 12-15 years ago, before he showed his Republican roots. My dog, who was friendly to most everyone, would often growl at him as we passed on the jogging trails. Guess animals are sometimes more intuitive than we. Maybe I should have let her off the leash.............

Lieberman has sold his soul. I don't even know who he is.

Lieberman's party isn't Repubican or Democrat or Independent. It's the "WHAT"S IN IT FOR ME" party. For a long time, he has put his own personal ambition (and desire for attention) first, and principles (assuming he has any) second.

In 2000, when Lieberman was theoretically running for VP on the same ticket as Gore, he hedged his bets by simultaneously running for reelection to his Connecticut Senate seat. Since Connecticut's governor was Republican, if Gore had won, that Senate seat would have turned over to the Republicans, shifting the leadership and making it more difficult for Gore to get anything done. (I wasn't following politics closely at the time, but I recall wondering why the Dems let Lieberman get away with such a self-serving stunt. )

Lieberman's enthusiastic support for McCain, and his attacks on the Democrats with whom he still caucuses, call into question whether he has any core beliefs about important issues like health care, tax policy, etc.

Full disclosure: I'm not able to be fully objective about Lieberman because his gawdawful whiny voice drives me up the wall.

Lieberman is in the What's In It For Israel Party. He assured us in 2000 that his religion and allegiance to Israel wouldn't affect his ability to govern. Clearly this is not the case. I support Israel's right to exist in peace with it's neighbor's as I support the right of any country to do so. I cannot support a Mideast policy that' entirely driven by that support.

He simply playing the Safe Net Politics. He is holding the Dems on a Ransom by saying without me,you have no majority. Holding the GOP to the same Ransom by saying,You have nothing against Barack without me.

But the trouble is,games like those are very short-lived. Come passed Nov,be it the Dem or the GOP that emerges victorious,he will be cast aside like a used condom. No one can trust him then. GOP will be worried he will play them the same way he is playing Dems now and Dems will think he either wants to play them again or he simply trying to use them to hold the GOP on Ransom.

Politics is a game where no one trusts anyone, but you are safe when people doubt you.But in his case now,no one doubts him anymore, they all know exactly who he is and thats a big loss in Politics

Interesting that Lieberman's party of one is called Connecticut for Lieberman and not the other way around - sometimes little things speak volumes.

Lieberman is, to use Olblermann's phrase "the worst person in the world.' He has managed to lie and manipulate his way into a position in the Dem party where he can do a great deal of damage. My wrath is actually also for the democratic leadership who continue to listen to his crap and refuse to kick him off his committees. I believe that Harry Reid will be sorry he made his back room deal with Lieberman when he runs for re-election.

I used to like lieberman! he's a smart guy. but in the last few years he's gone totally off track. I think like Mccain, he is getting old now and seeing what he wanted to accomplish pass him by. So, he's banking on a Mccain win, and hopeing something good comes his way. If not, lieberman could find himself out in the cold if the Dem's pick up seats, and he comes irrelevent to their cause. They have to work with him, not want, but have to-----because his vote is a swing for them 80% of the time. He is more of a Dem, than a Repub. But they see him now as a traitor. If he truely believed Mccain was the best, and his ideals were the same as Mccains, they wouldn't have no problem with this. But lieberman has always leaned more with the Dem's, and they think he does now and this is pandering for a sweet possition and nothing alse! THAT is what angers them more!

The Democrats will oust Mr. Lieberman from his committee leadership this year. He's supporting McCain because he knows his only hope to continue being a politician beyond 2010 is if McCain gets elected president. McCain will lose by a landslide and Lieberman will be persona non grata to Democrats until he loses his Senate re-election in 2010 should he choose to run again. Lieberman will get what he deserves for betraying the Democratic Party. Accountability is something Democrats are going to eagerly pursue for Republicans and Democrats who have managed to avoid it during the Bush administration.

What good is that slim majority if so much legislation continues to be obstructed by the GOP? Its time for Lieberman to go, and to release the ability of fear to be a "power giver" in DC.

Look, kick him out of the Dem Senate Caucus.

We'll loose control of Senate chairmanships for a few months, but that might be a useful campaign tool as Repub chairs will probably try to ram through some awful legislation in that short time.

HE's becoming so awful it is worth the TEMPORARY setback of not having his vote.

I agree. Sometimes you have to cut your losses and move on. Droopy Joe is a distraction and more than likely a Repug spy. I can’t believe there is much more damage he can do. He already is it is just slimy and behind the scenes. Shed some light on the little turncoat and let the people of the great state of Conn know whom they actually voted for.

The Democrats could really use it to their advantage in the fall if they were in the minority. They aren't getting anything passed in the Senate because of the games the Republicans are playing with every single bill. Seriously, what bills have been passed that was a direct result of the Dems holding a majority? Now they are going to cave on the telecom immunity deal that Bush has been demanding. While we are getting rid of Lieberman can we actually get a leader in the Senate that pushes back each time they are pushed around? Reid is probably a nice guy but really too much of a pu**y to be effective. Where's Clinton or Dodd or Feingold?

We must win a substantial majority in the Senate, and let Lieberman spend the rest of his term making drug buys for Cindy McCain.

I haven't checked Dickipedia yet, but Lieberman has got to be on there, no? I'm about sick of Israel getting to dictate so much of our political dialog--it's time for that to change. Israel is NOT a state, and while many consider them an ally (which is bewildering to me since it's hardly a give-and-take relationship), so much focus on what is in Israel's best interest is an infringement on our sovereignty and often clouds our decision-making with regards to what is truly best in the Middle East (for us and them).

Lieberman is the best republican they ever had. One can easily see what side he stands on by the company he keeps. This is what is wrong with politics today. These politicians need to not only announce their party, but their values. Lieberman is not a democrat nor an independent. I don't know what he is outside of confused. Another thing, I really resent US policies being determined by Israel. I don't have anything against anyone, but just what is this? Why is Israel pushing the U S agenda? Who is the world leader here? I thought it was us. I must have been mistaken.

Wasnt he the Dem's big gun to get Gore elected? Funny how when he doesnt do exactly what party leaders want after they betrayed him that he suddenly has lost his credibility????

Fact is Lieberman has forgotten more than Obama knows about the economy or foriegn policy.

You seem to forget, it was the people who voted who did not want him hanging around anymore. How bold and arrogant of those measly paeons to have learned the truth about Lieberman and decided they did not want him to represent them It was just too bad that Democrats called it on the voters because of some "loyalty" to Lieberman going back to the good old days of the club in the Senate. They have egg on their face now--and Barbara Boxer , not to mention the Clintons, is one of them. It's a club folks. You think the little people who have the nerve to believe their vote means something, but have no money to actually push ahead for their candidate, at least not as much as the Republicans for Lieberman or the powerful Democrats such as Boxer.

We must believe we can break this back patting club up in our congress. It is full of corruption, no matter how eloquent they may look on C=Span.

Lieberman isn't important enough to be Democrats #1 enemy. He's just another Zell Miller; screachy and willing to sell out America to try and remain relevant. He's toast in 2009 regardless.
