FLINT, Mich. — Barack Obama's campaign envisions a path to the presidency that could include Virginia, Georgia and several Rocky Mountain states, but not necessarily the pair of battlegrounds that decided the last two elections _ Florida and Ohio.

In a private pitch late last week to donors and former supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe outlined several alternatives to reaching the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House that runs counter to the conventional wisdom of recent elections.

At a fundraiser held at a Washington brewery Friday, Plouffe told a largely young crowd that the electoral map would be fundamentally different from the one in 2004. Wins in Ohio and Florida would guarantee Obama the presidency if he holds onto the states won by Democrat John Kerry, Plouffe said, but those two battlegrounds aren't required for victory.

Florida, which has 27 electoral votes this year, gave the presidency to George W. Bush in the disputed election of 2000. Ohio, with its 20 electoral votes, ensured Bush of re-election in 2004 in his race against Kerry. Neither state was hospitable to Obama this year. Clinton handily won in Ohio and she prevailed in Florida although the national party had punished the state and the candidates didn't campaign there.

The presumed Democratic nominee's electoral math counts on holding onto the states Kerry won, among them Michigan (17 electoral votes), where Obama campaigns on Monday and Tuesday. Plouffe said most of the Kerry states should be reliable for Obama, but three currently look relatively competitive with Republican rival John McCain _ Pennsylvania, Michigan and particularly New Hampshire.

Asked about his remarks, Plouffe said Ohio and Florida start out very competitive _ but he stressed that they are not tougher than other swing states and said Obama will play "extremely hard" for both. But he said the strategy is not reliant on one or two states.

"You have a lot of ways to get to 270," Plouffe said. "Our goal is not to be reliant on one state on November 4th."

Plouffe has been pitching such a new approach to the electoral map in calls and meetings, according to several people who discussed the conversations on the condition of anonymity because they were meant to be private. Plouffe confirmed the descriptions in the interview.

Plouffe and his aides are weighing where to contest, and where chances are too slim to marshal a large effort. A win in Virginia (13 electoral votes) or Georgia (15 votes) could give Obama a shot if he, like Kerry, loses Ohio or Florida.

Plouffe also has been touting Obama's appeal in once Republican-leaning states where Democrats have made gains in recent gubernatorial and congressional races, such as Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Alaska and North Dakota.

Obama's campaign has spent heavily on time and money in Virginia, where a Democratic presidential candidate hasn't won since 1964. In recent elections, however, high-profile Republicans have lost there. And in a sign of how serious Obama is taking the state, Plouffe dispatched to Virginia many aides who helped Obama stage his upset win in the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3.

The key, Plouffe told supporters, will be to register new black voters and new young voters in Virginia.

Likewise, Georgia has many unregistered black voters who could turn out in record numbers to support the first major-party nominee who is black, he argued. Plouffe said the campaign also will keep an eye on Mississippi and Louisiana as the race moves into the fall to see if new black voters could put them within reach.

In a telling bit of scheduling, Obama declared himself within reach of the nomination at the statehouse in Iowa, yet another state he hopes to put in play.

Plouffe is warning Democrats that McCain is an appealing candidate who has proved he can take votes from the middle before and could do so again. McCain won New Hampshire as a GOP candidate in 2000 and 2008, thanks in large part to the state's high number of independent voters.

Clinton won Michigan's renegade primary after the national party stripped the state of its delegates for moving its contest to January. Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot. Clinton handily won the Pennsylvania primary in April, gaining strong support from white, working-class voters.

Plouffe argues that McCain squandered his opportunity to reach independent voters in the past three months.

McCain's aides acknowledge frustration among fellow Republicans for the slow-to-start campaign. Even though McCain clinched his party's nomination in early March, his supporters didn't name operatives to run the must-win states, let alone open offices in key states. While Democrats hammered each other in their marathon contest, McCain left aides from his primary states sitting still, waiting for orders. It took more than two months for McCain's national headquarters to approve budgets for the battleground states.

The task, Plouffe said, is to define McCain as tied to Bush on the economy, the war and abortion rights. He said the campaign will go on offense against McCain, besides playing aggressive defense when criticized.

That promise was also given by Obama, who said Friday night, "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun." Critics have questioned why a candidate who promotes a new kind of politics planned such bare-knuckles tactics.

Among independent voters, McCain and Obama are about tied in favorability ratings in recent polls.

Plouffe in recent days has been making his pitch aggressively _ part cheerleading, part sales job. Many of Clinton's supporters remain frustrated with how national Democrats resolved the issue of Michigan's delegates, agreeing to seat all of them at the nominating convention but penalizing them by half for violating the calendar, and Plouffe has tried to quell that frustration.

He wraps up the pitches by asking Democrats to imagine Obama taking the oath of office. On Friday at the Capitol City Brewery, about a block from where that would happen, Plouffe pointed toward the Capitol steps to reinforce the visual.

According to MSNBC, Quninipiac poll: Obama is leading Mcain in Ohio, Pennsyvania, AND FLORIDA!
If this is true John Mcain has a steep hill to climb if he wants to win the presidency. This experiment in Theocratic Facism began in Florida, it's only fitting that it dies here!

Good move. Who made Ohio the gatekeeper to the White House anyway? Obama will get the nomination without Ohio. Why not the White House too?!

Florida will probably go Republican...but I think he has a chance in Ohio. Good that they are considering every possibility though. Not a good idea to rely on only specific states as it gives you no "wiggle" room. He's got a good team.

He doesn't need white working class dems, Hispanics, elderly, seniors or women either. So says Donna Brazile.

And Donna Brazille is a political genius? Is that the same Donna Brazille that help lose the 2000 election for Gore, who should have won hands down. Or is that the Donna Brazille that manipulated the DNC rules committee to take 4 votes from HRC to give to O and then said he was offering an olive branch?

Team Obama is brilliant; it knows exactly what it is doing. If they say they can win without Ohio and Florida, I believe them. Beating the Clintons is a cakewalk compared to beating McCain, who makes Bob Dole seem vibrant and attractive. Who makes Herbert Hoover seem vibrant and attractive. And yes, I know he's dead.

Obama will win if everyone votes for the candidate they have something in common with.
If your old, rich and white, vote McCain.
If your multi-racial, or have a white grandmother, or black father who left the family, or are a minority, or have a Muslim name, or worked yourself through college, or you are a father, or didnt leave your first wife when she became crippled, or lived in a place with indigenous people, or are an American not represented by the NRA or greed, than vote for the candidate who represents a little of ALL Americans!! Obama '08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found a great site that shows all the electoral college maps from every US presidential election. It is fascinating how the electorate has changed through the years. Three times the president was elected but did not win the popular vote in 2000 of course, in 1976 Rutherford B. Hayes lost he popular vote by exactly 3 points was selected by congressional commission, and in 1988 Benjamin Harrison lost the popular vote by just than one point but won the electoral college. The most ironic part is that all presidents who lost the popular vote and won the presidency were Republicans.

My point is I think Obama will win the popular vote by a decent amount, but the electoral college total could be very close if not tied. All this being said I think Obama wins OH based on the miserable economic conditions in this country.

I admit to being politically challenged, and even if it's TRUE... isn't the act of essentially saying, "We don't need the DEMOCRATIC voters of Florida and Ohio to win the election" kind of a STUPID thing to say?
I'm not a citizen of either state, but this REEKS of something the Bush/McCain camp would do- appear arrogant and dismissive of some voters, only to wind up showing themselves to be a bunch of ham-handed bunglers who have to back-pedal on the remark, with a very lame, "What we REALLY MEANT to say was..."
Didn't it occur to anyone in the Obama organization that many of those would-be voters will think to themselves, "Well, I'll just stay home on election day. I mean what's the point, SINCE MY VOTE DOESN'T MEAN SQUAT?"

As it has been said many times her, the campaign is in no way saying they have written off the voters of those 2 states. That would be very stupid, and cmon you cant possibly think taht Barack Obama is a stupid man. The feeling is that it is a wise strategy not to depend put all the states in play so they can avoid having to win those two. I'm a Florida resident and I take no offense at all at what was implied. Especially knowing the pain the republican zombies in my state caused the American People by delivering the white house to Mr Bush!

This sounds completely retarded.

Sure, you can win an election without winning FL and OH (but it's rough).

The real issue, though, is that if Obama is unable to win the VOTERS in those states, then he will be having trouble with similar types of voters across the nation.

The point is this: if Obama can't win Ohio and Florida, he will be failing with those demographics.

I thought I read some time ago that one of Nixon's daughters (Eisenhowser (sp)) would be supporting Obama. What ever happened with that or am I having one of those over 25 moments. It happens you know and I'm in my mid-sixties. Don't know what it's like for someone over 70 but got to believe it occurs more frequently at that age. One final thought - living here in "red" country in one of GA's reddest of red districts, I am pleasantly suprised with the lack of any yard signs and bumper stickers supporting the repugnant candidate. Even my boss whom I have always considered a republican is showing enthusiasm for Obama. I say that to say that GA will be in play this fall.

Especially with ex-Georgia Congressman, Bob Barr (running as the Libertarian candidate), stealing a few Percentage points from McCain, 500,000 black voters in Georgia have yet to register to vote, and McCain isn't exactly loved by the Evangelicals - Georgia is looking like pretty good terrain for Obama.

The Obama campaign actually COULD win without Florida and Ohio. If you follow a 50 state plan instead of gaming for electoral votes like the last two Democratic campaigns did (and ignoring the "little" states), if you focus strongly on a get out the vote campaign and keep up with people, make sure they cast votes on election day, keep their information straight about the candidates, you don't really need to win Florida and Ohio. That said, winning Florida and Ohio sure does make it a lot easier. However, Hillary Clinton is probably a much tougher politician to beat in an election than McCain, and Obama already beat her in a 50 state strategy. Obama's campaign was able to get enough new voters to turn out during the primaries compared to the Republicans that it'd be really surprising if McCain was even able to compete for the popular vote, let alone the electoral vote (which may already be split in some states if Bob Barr runs a successful campaign as the Libertarian candidate).

Obama's campaign might be able to win without Ohio or Florida, but why would it want to? there is alot of time between now and Nov for Obama to woo voters in both these states and press realeases like these only serve to make Ohio and Fla voters feel that their votes do not matter. Obama's fifty state strategy will be very successful as long as it really includes all fifty states, even those where the polls do not show him in the lead... Al Gore endorses Obama tonight and that should really provide the bump he is looking for in Ohio and Fla..

He may not win FL but it would be a good thing for Mr. Obama if he forces Mcain to spend precious resorces in a supposedly red state. A hard fought contest in FL could weaken Mcain in other states.

The 'pubs are scared and desperate. While this is no doubt amusing to most of us, it is no reason for complacency among Democratic supporters. These people have proven that they will stop at nothing to win or even steal the White House. An overwhelming landslide victory in favor of Barack Obama is the only thing that will offset election fraud and voter suppression.
