WASHINGTON — A major labor union and the liberal organization MoveOn.org are joining forces to air a provocative new ad portraying John McCain's Iraq policy as a prolonged presence that would involve a new generation of Americans.

Paid for by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and by MoveOn.org, the commercial represents an expansion by Democratic-leaning groups of a campaign against McCain. It also targets one of McCain's major assets _ his public credibility on national security issues.

The ad will begin airing nationally Wednesday on CNN and MSNBC, and in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin markets. It will run for a week at a cost of $543,000. In the ad, an actress with an infant child speaks as if she were addressing McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"Hi John McCain," she says. "This is Alex. And he's my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can't have him."

McCain has stressed that his goal is to reduce American casualties, shift security missions to Iraqis and, ultimately, have a non-combat U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to that in South Korea. He has speculated that such a presence could last 100 years or more.

Last week, McCain aired his own commercial where he asserts, "I hate war." The ad is biographical, recalling his family's military service and his more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The campaign referred questions about the ad to the Republican National Committee, which said the country needs a president who listens to his commanders, not partisan groups like MoveOn.org. "Bringing peace and security to Iraq will require a commander in chief who won't allow partisanship to cloud his judgment," said spokesman Alex Conant.

Polls show that while a large majority of the public opposes the war, they split almost evenly between McCain and his likely Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, over who would better handle Iraq.

"The ad aims to give voice to so many people who are frustrated that we seem to be stuck in Iraq," said Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's executive director. "It speaks to the worry that people have that we'll be sending another generation of young men and women to Iraq if we continue."

The AFSCME-MoveOn effort unites two forces that were on opposite camps during the Democratic primary. AFSCME backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, while MoveOn backed Obama, who clinched the nomination this month.

Paul Booth, executive assistant to AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee, said the union has not yet endorsed Obama but said the ad illustrates "progressive forces coming together of the same mind about McCain."

MoveOn and AFSCME are paying for the ads through federally regulated political action committees.

Obama does not accept financial contributions from political action committees. He has called on outside nonprofit groups not to air ads in the presidential campaign. But his admonition has been aimed at groups that receive unlimited contributions, mostly from wealthy individuals. Political action committees, however, are restricted to receiving contributions of no more than $5,000.

This was a well-done ad. My babies won't be fighting McCain's war either.

This woman should be thankful that her family hasn't been blown up by terrorists yet. I assume she wouldn't want that either.

if we had one 9-11 size attack per year, your chance of dying would still be 1 in 1300, compared to 1 in 83 for motor vehicle accidents. That's a pretty big "if." I guess you're thankful you didn't slip and fall in the shower or get struck by lightning.

...and your chances of being killed by pollution or by faulty construction are even less than this. Maybe we shouldn't do anything about these either. Is that your point?

The actual problem with this comment is that we are actually creating an environment to which it is easier to recruit terrorists. I could go on about how, but if you haven't done your research on this, perhaps you could do this today instead of spewing simple cliches.
Good Luck.

BTW, we killed more innocent Iraqi's than the people FROM Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia killed on 9/11, therefore the leaders of our country who mislead the military and country into war are no better, are they?

I fact, we are a lot better. There has never been a country as powerful as ours that has abused that power less than we.

When we enter a war, we take great pains (at some cost to American lives) to avoid killing noncombatants.

On the other hand, the savages that attacked us deliberately tried to kill as many innocent civilians as possible - this was their entire purpose. They could have killed 50,000 in the World Trade Center.

If the naive woman in this movie were one of the Islamofascists, she would soon be training her baby to become a suicide bomber. Her aspirations for her darling baby would be that someday he would blow himself up, and take as many "nonbelievers" as possible with him.

Make no mistake that we are a lot better than the savages who attacked us.

She should be, as we all should be.

But none of that has anything to do with Iraq, which is not about terrorism.

Yup. Saw it this morning as well. Still a good ad. What is even better about it is you can't tell what type of ad it is in the beginning so I can see some people taken a bit by surprise by it.

This ad really hit them hard (the Repugs)
Who is that Amy person? The one who's on CNN's panels? She hardly ever gets
ruffled. She called this ad disgusting! I use her as a barometer - therefore, I think
it's most perfect. GREAT JOB MOVE-ON!
Now, would you PLEASE do one encouraging everyone to block FOX from their TV's? Because
that is half of the problem we're facing.

1) The baby is not of age, and 2) I believe that once the baby grows up to the age of 18, he would have to "volunteer".

in 18 years, who knows, and if we're sill in Iraq, there will be a draft because no one would be dumb enough to enlist voluntarily.

So... the point of the ad is that someday, maybe, in the future, at an uncertain point in time, Republican and Democrats (because Congress has to vote on a draft), would put in a national draft, even though no Republicans have so far called for a draft (Chuck Hagel's national service plan does not require military service, just some type of national service)?

I see.

People need to stop this and stop and think. The US does not have the money or man power to conduct all these wars or the wars McCain might want to start with Iran and other countries. The only way to do so in the future (due to those reluctant to join due to poor benefits, care, and pay (with the debt we have this will be hit I feel and already those fighting get paid crap for what they are asked to put on the line day after day) and those that don't rejoin because they are tired of the fighting or simply can't fight anymore) is to reintroduce the draft. A "volunteer" military can only stay that if you have a steady stream of people coming in to out number or match those leaving. That isn't the case nor will be the case in a few years, especailly if McCain and the Republicans get their way and start a war with Iran or keep doing things that could piss off China and/or Russia.

Don't fall back on one has to "volunteer". Look at the whole picture. If things continue the way they are or get worse if McCain is in office one won't have a choice to volunteer but be forced to serve. To serve for the greed of corporations and the money and power hungry Republicans in Washington.

My grandson is a teenager. No one can tell him or his friends draft is unlikely. Foreboding of the draft affects them all.

My grandson was actually relieved when a congenital foot problem required surgery since it would eliminate him from being drafted. On the other hand he is going to have a physical to see if he could be a fireman. He would love a job where there is true community service.

While MoveOn.org's promo may be inappropriate, the message is still there, no matter how long a war lasts. The GOP say we need to listen to our commander, not a group. We did listen to our commander, which is how we got into Iraq in the first place. If we listen to our commander in the future, he needs to be one who is honorable and earns our respect. That commander would be Barack Obama.

I appreciate what MoveOn does but I wish they had not used the 100 years quote. That was retracted.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:08 PM on 06/17/2008

What do you mean "retracted?" McCain tried to "retract" it by saying he didn't mean it, but so what? His retraction means nothing. It lacks all credibility. It is no different than him protesting that he really DOES know the difference between sunni and shia, but we all know he doesn't. The tape speaks for itself.

Please. The Republicans try to make up stuff about Sen. Obama and other Dems, misquote them all the time, and use racial divisions to their benefit. McCain's quote is fair game. He said it and has not backed down from it. Iraq is nothing like Japan, Korea, or Germany. Even then the people in those countries aren't exactly jumping for joy with our presence there anyway. If they had a choice they'd be happy to see us go tomorrow. They don't do, only their governments do.

OK. No draft. Then what happens? Do our soldiers go back to Iraq for their twentieth or thirtieth tours? What if so many of them are severely wounded or even killed? Then who fights in Iraq? Maybe we could hire Chinese nationals to be our Army in Iraq. Even with their booming economy, there are still way more than one billion people living in China. So there must be enough Chinese citizens looking for high paying jobs. We could hire them to form our new Army after our current troops are gone. And how do we pay for the new American Army composed of Chinese citizens? With money borrowed from China, of course.

See, it all makes sense.

We'll pay private contractors from Blackwater to do the job. We'll pay them over a hundred thousand dollars a year while we continue to pay our front line military men and women peanuts, for doing a harder job. And they get healthcare while our soldiers get sent home from the VA with an aspirin and a lecture about how they need to be tougher. Meanwhile their spouses are surviving on revolving predatory loans and when our soldiers go back to work, they find their employer gave their job away because nobody from the Administration is enforcing the rule against firing people for being called up to war.

Wow, so much to be proud of in our country right now. And no, don't jump on me for saying that because I didn't vote for him.

They are already making soldiers serve multiple tours. That's as good as a draft right there.

If anything happened - if there were a real threat to our country - there would be no way to defend it without a draft. Even if Cheney does not attack Iran.

Agreed. Stop loss is a de facto draft. And it happens when the President decides it happens. Also agreed that we cannot keep up this pace, and certainly not for a multi-theater Persian/Arabian occupation, without a draft. People act like it was so long ago that we had a draft. It wasn't.

Brilliant ! They should hammer this over and over IMO. If elected McC will have to instate a draft......has to. These men and woman serving now can only be stretched so far....they keep sending our soldiers back out there until they come back broken...then they throw them aside like toys that broke.
Vote for McCain....vote fora draft.

You are absolutely right. John Mc. will bring the draft. There are no more troops available for wars that last 100 years. Mothers everywhere have to think very carefuly how they are going to vote. The ad is excellent.

We should reinstate the draft. Bush/Cheney treat our men and women in the military like they are effing toy soldiers, and justify sending them to die in an illegal war on the grounds that "they volunteered." Fine. Let's see how they justify it when the men do not volunteer. Want to see the women of this country take to the streets with pitch forks? Bring back the draft. War will be over inside of a week.

Amercian troops occupying a middle eastern country are seen as "infidels" by those being occupied. Therefore, our very presence will ALWAYS engender violence towards our troops. It will never be this fantasy that Mc Cain has like the troops in Japan or Korea. The man is out of touch, and just doesn't get it.
