WASHINGTON — A major labor union and the liberal organization MoveOn.org are joining forces to air a provocative new ad portraying John McCain's Iraq policy as a prolonged presence that would involve a new generation of Americans.

Paid for by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and by MoveOn.org, the commercial represents an expansion by Democratic-leaning groups of a campaign against McCain. It also targets one of McCain's major assets _ his public credibility on national security issues.

The ad will begin airing nationally Wednesday on CNN and MSNBC, and in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin markets. It will run for a week at a cost of $543,000. In the ad, an actress with an infant child speaks as if she were addressing McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"Hi John McCain," she says. "This is Alex. And he's my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can't have him."

McCain has stressed that his goal is to reduce American casualties, shift security missions to Iraqis and, ultimately, have a non-combat U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to that in South Korea. He has speculated that such a presence could last 100 years or more.

Last week, McCain aired his own commercial where he asserts, "I hate war." The ad is biographical, recalling his family's military service and his more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The campaign referred questions about the ad to the Republican National Committee, which said the country needs a president who listens to his commanders, not partisan groups like MoveOn.org. "Bringing peace and security to Iraq will require a commander in chief who won't allow partisanship to cloud his judgment," said spokesman Alex Conant.

Polls show that while a large majority of the public opposes the war, they split almost evenly between McCain and his likely Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, over who would better handle Iraq.

"The ad aims to give voice to so many people who are frustrated that we seem to be stuck in Iraq," said Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's executive director. "It speaks to the worry that people have that we'll be sending another generation of young men and women to Iraq if we continue."

The AFSCME-MoveOn effort unites two forces that were on opposite camps during the Democratic primary. AFSCME backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, while MoveOn backed Obama, who clinched the nomination this month.

Paul Booth, executive assistant to AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee, said the union has not yet endorsed Obama but said the ad illustrates "progressive forces coming together of the same mind about McCain."

MoveOn and AFSCME are paying for the ads through federally regulated political action committees.

Obama does not accept financial contributions from political action committees. He has called on outside nonprofit groups not to air ads in the presidential campaign. But his admonition has been aimed at groups that receive unlimited contributions, mostly from wealthy individuals. Political action committees, however, are restricted to receiving contributions of no more than $5,000.

I liked the ad. I just had two grandsons turn one year old and the ad hits on exactly what my thoughts have been. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the ad crosses gender lines - unlike McCain, not everyone wants their children to serve in the military - unless we revisit WWII conditions.

Um. This ad is so silly.

No you're completely wrong. This ad is going to move hundreds of thousands of moderate and independent swing voters away from McCain and to voting for Obama, no doubt.

I got involved in this election process because I don't want my two grandsons being drafted, then killed, maimed or traumatized over oil wars against countries who have not attacked our shores. And if you want to argue the "not attacked our shores", the Iraq people did not attack us, sons of Saudi Arabian multi-millionares did.

It's short, sweet and to the point. Which is what an ad should be. It will be talked about in the media and thus get a lot more play than it does just during it's actually run time. People will start to associate a baby with McGrumpy's 100 year war fantasy and it will whittle away at his image on national security.

In 100 years it is possible that her great grandson or great granddaughter could serve in Iraq.

If we are going to stop loss for 100 more years I recommend our troops marry someone in Iraq and start a family there. That will allow them to see their spouse and kids regularly.

For the 3 trillion we spent in Iraq so far we could be well along on our energy independence and have universal heath care and have a lot of money left over.

Also if we start a war in Iran, 2.5x the population of Iraq, we will probably need 2.5x as many troops, an additional 750,000 troops (draft) to see results similar as we have had in Iraq. If this occurs the US dollar will be worth nothing and gasoline will be so expensive only the rich will be able to afford it.

John McCain has said 'we may be in Iraq for 100 years or even 1000 years.' To be fair, McCain now says that it's 'ok to have US troops in Iraq for 100 years so long as we're not taking casualties.' But that's silly since, if it's a war zone, we'll obviously be taking in coming fire for as long as US troops are on the ground in Iraq. Does anybody seriously believe that islamic radicals wouldn't attack US forces in Iraq for as long as we're there?? Thats what makes this ad extremely powerful, because it brings it home, especially to that 'security mom' swing-voter. Who wants to elect a guy who has literally promised 'more wars???' Kids who were only 11 and 12 when 9/11 happened are now heading to Iraq, so this ad isn't a stretch at all, people need to think about their own families and how failed policies really do affect them.

This ad is terrific..

Can you imagine saying 100 years in Iraq and then he votes against Vet funding because it dis-incents soldiers from staying in the service? Nice job John. Kiss Bush again.

The "best and the bravest" are being used up with 3 and 4 tours of duty. They lowered the standards and now they are taking felons and borderline mentally retarded. I'm not kidding! Check the facts. Sad.

How soon before we have draft people? How are we supposed to fight Mc Cain's 100 year war AND invade all the other countries that Mc Cain is lusting after like Iran, Syria, Lebanon, France, Bermuda..............................

If only the best and the bravest join then why have they LOWERED recruiting standards. Because NO ONE wants to fight and die in an unnecessary war. No one wants to shed blood or their child's blood to make corporations rich! Because that what this war is about make Halliburton, Bechtel, Blackwater, Dynacorp, etc. etc. wealthy and powerful. Oh and about having permanent bases in Iraq to protect our (oops I meant their) oil. Bush promised we were not going to have permanent bases there but as usual what came out of his mouth was a lie. It shouldn't even surprise me any more. What ever he says it means the opposite.

This ad doesn't work for me. I'm an Army brat but I'm also a mother. I understand what this woman is saying. When my son was born (he's now 21), I could envision packing him in the car and driving him to Canada rather than risk the chance that anything could happen to him in a war.

But there is this tension: our horror at the thought of even the possibility of losing our children to war versus the possibility that there may one day come a war that must be fought. Even if that day arrives, many of us will still want to pack up our children and go. Even if we don't act on that urge, we will still want to. But that won't change the fact that some wars must be fought. We can minimize the possibility (hopefully) by keeping in mind the enormity of the costs of war, but still... some wars will have to be fought.

This ad doesn't speak to that possibility at all. Doesn't envision it. I think that's a mistake. I think it would be a stronger ad if it did.

The main point of this ad is that John McCain is going to need 'your' children to fight his promised 'more wars.' But the underlying point, specifically, is that the Iraq War was NOT a war that needed to be fought. Furthermore, by the time one's kids are about to go off to a future war, they won't be babies, they'll be young adults, maybe 18, and it won't be a situation where u can drive over to Canada (btw Canadian immigration laws have changed significantly since the last time Americans needed to do that).

That would actually undermine the ad's impact. As it stands, it forces the GOP to defend its policy in Iraq by trying to distinguish it as a war that must be fought by little Alex, which of course will appear utterly ridiculous. Why make the opposite argument in advance, when most people already buy it?

Lindy-

I see your point, and I agree with you up to a certain point.

Wars must be fought, and there are times when we need to use our military might to protect our interests. However, I think the implication of the ad is, and I'm gonna use caps to make my point so don't read it as a shout, that THIS IS NOT THAT WAR. The occupation of Iraq (it's not a "war" even by Bush's standard) was not and is not necessary, IMO.

Afghanistan- that "war" should be fought. And I'm sure others will argue for other places we need to send our military. But Iraq is not one of them.

What I think would have made it a better ad is if they could have found a real mother who lost her husband over there with a newborn. There are plenty to be found these days.

In case you want credentials, I'm a veteran of desert storm, purple heart recipient.

Semper Fi.

THIS IS NOT THAT WAR

Absolutely. I've been against this war from the start. It is heart-breaking what's being done in our name. My problem with the ad is that it blurs the very distinction you're talking about -- between, for example, Afghanistan and Iraq, and that will only give conservatives an excuse to dismiss it.

Of course, they'll find an excuse anyway, so perhaps there's no real harm. But still... why hand them a club and say: "Here. Smack me upside the head with this"?

And you're right: sadly, there are plenty of examples around for effective ads.

And thanks -- for your thoughtful note and for your service.

How is this different than the 3am commercial, that Sen. Obama's campaign trashed and reprimanded?? How can we, as Democrats, stand there waving fingers saying 'fear tactics" when this is EXACTLY what this commercial offers.
