WASHINGTON — A major labor union and the liberal organization MoveOn.org are joining forces to air a provocative new ad portraying John McCain's Iraq policy as a prolonged presence that would involve a new generation of Americans.

Paid for by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and by MoveOn.org, the commercial represents an expansion by Democratic-leaning groups of a campaign against McCain. It also targets one of McCain's major assets _ his public credibility on national security issues.

The ad will begin airing nationally Wednesday on CNN and MSNBC, and in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin markets. It will run for a week at a cost of $543,000. In the ad, an actress with an infant child speaks as if she were addressing McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"Hi John McCain," she says. "This is Alex. And he's my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can't have him."

McCain has stressed that his goal is to reduce American casualties, shift security missions to Iraqis and, ultimately, have a non-combat U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to that in South Korea. He has speculated that such a presence could last 100 years or more.

Last week, McCain aired his own commercial where he asserts, "I hate war." The ad is biographical, recalling his family's military service and his more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The campaign referred questions about the ad to the Republican National Committee, which said the country needs a president who listens to his commanders, not partisan groups like MoveOn.org. "Bringing peace and security to Iraq will require a commander in chief who won't allow partisanship to cloud his judgment," said spokesman Alex Conant.

Polls show that while a large majority of the public opposes the war, they split almost evenly between McCain and his likely Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, over who would better handle Iraq.

"The ad aims to give voice to so many people who are frustrated that we seem to be stuck in Iraq," said Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's executive director. "It speaks to the worry that people have that we'll be sending another generation of young men and women to Iraq if we continue."

The AFSCME-MoveOn effort unites two forces that were on opposite camps during the Democratic primary. AFSCME backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, while MoveOn backed Obama, who clinched the nomination this month.

Paul Booth, executive assistant to AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee, said the union has not yet endorsed Obama but said the ad illustrates "progressive forces coming together of the same mind about McCain."

MoveOn and AFSCME are paying for the ads through federally regulated political action committees.

Obama does not accept financial contributions from political action committees. He has called on outside nonprofit groups not to air ads in the presidential campaign. But his admonition has been aimed at groups that receive unlimited contributions, mostly from wealthy individuals. Political action committees, however, are restricted to receiving contributions of no more than $5,000.

This ad is just reminding everyone that these kids dying in our unjust, lie-based war, are someone's child. When I see a just war, I will be the first to send one of my four children. Just like when I see a good looking tattoo, I'll get one. I don't think either of those things are going to happen anytime soon.

He most certainly did. I heard it with my own ears. I watched his build up to this war. I believed him and his stooges for a time. There were always nagging doubts about his W.M.D's and the 9/11 attack connection. It just never added up. This administration and the 28% that still live the lies should be the only ones I read about dying and being maimed. This has been the most devastating 71/2 years ever.

So "intentionally ignoring evidence that did not support is position and exaggerating evidence that he knew was suspect", isn't lying? You're splitting so many hairs all you're going to be left with is a head full of split ends.

I got the email from Move On about this ad being the most influential ad they have ever come up with. Personally I don't get it. I assume the woman is an actress because there is no statement of who she is. To me that cheapens any emotional appeal. Then she seems like a twit when out of the blue she tells John McCain he can't have her Alex, as if he had threatened to kidnap him. It would have been more effective if she said something like "I don't want Alex, and your children too, to grow up in a country that is in an insane war throughout his childhood, his adolescence, and even his adulthood, whereas John McCain thinks a 100-year occupation of Iraq is just fine." The current ad seems like swiftboating, but it's such a blatant cheap shot, that it makes me feel sympathy for McCain and that's the last thing voters should be feeling. Yes it will get attention, but all the wrong kind. Scrap it.

Curious about all the negative comments here? This explains it, the attack from the right on an ad that is working.

Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research—a premier research and strategic consulting firm that represents clients rangingfrom the AARP to the Chicago Cubs—found that a "61 percent majority describe the ad as convincing." Theyalso found that 58 percent agree with the ad's message.
Greenberg went on to say, "These are some of the highest numbers we have seen for a political advertisementsince we started using these questions in 2004."

I've been fighting republicons since you were probably in diapers, and I think this ad's wrong. It reminds me of the old National Lampoon cover with a cute dog and a hand holding a gun to its head with the banner "Buy this Magazine or We'll Shoot This Dog". It's a sop, a cheap shot play on emotions. And it is demeaning to Democrats and women and BO.

The mother in this ad is a victim. She expresses no concern or caring for her country. She says nothing about the moral failure of the war, or its millions of victims, or the mothers of soldiers whose sons have already given their full measure of devotion. Her single objective is to keep HER son out of harm's way.

I don't see how anyone would want to look at her - or this ad - and say, yeah, there's a great American, let's follow her.

Feeling so superior today are we? All full of ourselves. If you were half as smart as you imagine yourself to be you would have read the comment before going off half cocked. The ad is working, the research proves it. Now, go argue with the facts.

It didn't feel that way to me. I have a son and grandson and that thought ran through my mind. In order to keep troops in Iraq for 100 years a draft will be necessary. Unless you'll be sending our boys in uniform to Iraq on 30 tours.

Going to war for reasons other than self-defense is wrong. And even in self-defense, war is wrong for humanity!

As my comment keeps disappearing, I guess I should re-post it:

The main flaws with tthis ad:
- Alex would be like 9 yrs old at the end of a McCain presidency, not eligible for any country's draft
- McCain does not want the draft reinstated
- ONLY DEMOCRAT reps and senators have proposed reinstating the draft (see the congressional record)
- by the time Alex is old enough to join the military, he would be an adult, and as it is an all volunteer army, the decision to join would be up to him (after all you Dems want to give abortion power to 13 yr old and younger girls, can't 18 yr old and older men and women make decisions for themselves?)
- in the nearly 20 yrs before Alex could join the military, there is a good chance Bagdad would be akin to serving in Germany or Japan or the Philippines 20 yrs after the wars there (ballpark 1965)

In response to your post:

1. Alex might be 9 at the end of McCain's presidency, but if we have reinstituted the draft and that point and are embroiled in a war in Iran by then, he could be effected.
2. How do you know if McCain wants the draft reinstated? Regardless, if he gets us into a war with Iran the fact is we will need combat ready troops. We don't have enough to start a new war, so the draft will become necessary.
3. Republican Senator Chuck Hagel started calling to reinstate the draft to support the troops in Iraq as early as 2004. Many top military officials are saying it will be necessary just to stay in Iraq:
http://www.stopthinkvote.com/facts/militaryfacts.html.
4. You're right, once Alex is an adult, the choice will be up to him. Unless the draft has been reinstated and we're at war.
5. It's spelled Baghdad and let's hope so.

It is rather ironic that the same people who are so anti abortion, have no problem with young men and women being wiped out literally and figuratively, the death penalty and certainly not paying for social programs for the children already here. That kind of thinking is tragically flawed. Thanks Loretta.

The only reason Democrats bring up the draft is because so many people who support the war have no real stake in it. No family members who are putting their lives at risk for an unnecessary war. If this war is really a fight to save America, then we should all go no deferments for butt boils. But it's not and that's why the Repugs don't want a draft. Because as soon as you institute a draft people will want this war to end because they know it's just a money maker for the few.

That's funny that is NOT what the Senate Report just stated. You liberals talk about how the Senate Report supposedly proved Bush was a liar never bothered to read a single word of it, have you? You take one or two snippets you hear on the news and you use that as the basis for your claims. Yet one the same source is used to prove how ignorant you are then all of a sudden it is a no good source. How typical. You say he lied yet you can not prove one single lie. Not one. Talk about waking up. Maybe you should go back to sleep.

Bush and Co are liars and murderers at worst...complete idiots at best. They had generals telling them it wasn't going to be a cake walk (Gen Shinseki for one) and they would need alot more soldiers but Bush & Co refused to listen and said that we would be greeted as liberators...none of the military brass believed that.

We were warned that there could be civil war between Shia and Sunnis by other generals...but Bill Crystol (Project for a New American Century) brushed it off as "pop psychology". They told us that democracy would come when people voted and all we got was a theocracy with strong ties to Iran.

I think that that as long as this president is in office we shouldn't sleep, but maybe you should go back to school and get an edumacation.

"My friends, I will have an energy policy which will eliminate our dependence on oil from Middle East that will then prevent us from having ever to send our young men and women into conflict again in the Middle East." John McCain at a town hall meeting, Denver, Colorado.

My sons David and Mick are 11 and 8 years old and the light of my life, along with my beautiful 21 year old daughter. John McCain CANNOT have them to fight for oil so Americans can continue to drive SUVs rather than make the necessary sacrifices to quit our addiction to foreign oil. He CANNOT have them to try to establish democracies in countries that have had the same way of life for thousands of years and do not want America cramming our ideology down their throats and expecting them to establish democracies in a matter of years. Their are more effective ways to help countries achieve democracy than military force.

There are numerous signs that our country is heading toward reinstating the draft - but many people are so concerned with bickering over the candidates they are missing them.

Military and elected officials are calling more and more for reinstating the draft and yet many will be shocked and outraged when this finally happens. Arm yourself with the facts:

I've been trying to figure out what makes this ad right and I think I've got it. It makes the Iraq war personal ... its about her kid ... my kid ... your kid ... and not having to fight a war in Iraq.

Republicans want to make it impersonal. They want to make this war about spreading democracy ... freeing Iraqis ... winning. They want to talk about the surge working ... alquaida ... islamo-facist. They want to throw out sound bites like "fighting over there so we don't have to fight here" or "mission accomplished" or "peace in the middleeast" .

Here's a headsup for republicans ... nobody cares about those things ... nobody cares ... nooobbbbooodddyyy.

Voters care about republicans having lied us into this war ... voters care about voting republicans out in 2006 because they wouldn't listen and now having still not listened voters care about voting more republicans out in 2008.

Voters care about their children being used as cannon fodder in other countries wars even while republicans make sure they can't get a job in this country to keep from going.

Arrogance and stupidity won't let Republicans get it .They feel if they can only find the right words ... the right spokesman ... the right talking head to put the ad down ... voters will let them stay.

Well ... good luck with that.

Great ad.

Nobody cares for those things?

What about the thousands of Americans who are currently overseas in today's US military and those who VOLUNTEER (and their families) every day to join said group?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:58 PM on 06/17/2008

They volutarily joined the military to fight for this country ... they did not volunteer to be used as canon fodder in an unjust war.

Now that they can't speak for themselves ... and they can't under the UCMJ(uniformed code of military justice) ... we have to speak for them.

There is nothing impersonal about the republican stance on this mess.

I will speak for myself here, I want my husband to finish this up before my boys come of age and join the military. I am scared to death that my husband, when he goes, will not come back. But, it is the price both of us are willing to pay to, at least try, keep our sons and daughters out of this.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:12 PM on 06/17/2008

There is everything impersonal about the republican stance in this matter in that it has nothing to do about protecting you or your family ... remember we were not in danger ... your husband is just being used.
