WASHINGTON — A major labor union and the liberal organization MoveOn.org are joining forces to air a provocative new ad portraying John McCain's Iraq policy as a prolonged presence that would involve a new generation of Americans.

Paid for by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and by MoveOn.org, the commercial represents an expansion by Democratic-leaning groups of a campaign against McCain. It also targets one of McCain's major assets _ his public credibility on national security issues.

The ad will begin airing nationally Wednesday on CNN and MSNBC, and in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin markets. It will run for a week at a cost of $543,000. In the ad, an actress with an infant child speaks as if she were addressing McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"Hi John McCain," she says. "This is Alex. And he's my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can't have him."

McCain has stressed that his goal is to reduce American casualties, shift security missions to Iraqis and, ultimately, have a non-combat U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to that in South Korea. He has speculated that such a presence could last 100 years or more.

Last week, McCain aired his own commercial where he asserts, "I hate war." The ad is biographical, recalling his family's military service and his more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The campaign referred questions about the ad to the Republican National Committee, which said the country needs a president who listens to his commanders, not partisan groups like MoveOn.org. "Bringing peace and security to Iraq will require a commander in chief who won't allow partisanship to cloud his judgment," said spokesman Alex Conant.

Polls show that while a large majority of the public opposes the war, they split almost evenly between McCain and his likely Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, over who would better handle Iraq.

"The ad aims to give voice to so many people who are frustrated that we seem to be stuck in Iraq," said Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's executive director. "It speaks to the worry that people have that we'll be sending another generation of young men and women to Iraq if we continue."

The AFSCME-MoveOn effort unites two forces that were on opposite camps during the Democratic primary. AFSCME backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, while MoveOn backed Obama, who clinched the nomination this month.

Paul Booth, executive assistant to AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee, said the union has not yet endorsed Obama but said the ad illustrates "progressive forces coming together of the same mind about McCain."

MoveOn and AFSCME are paying for the ads through federally regulated political action committees.

Obama does not accept financial contributions from political action committees. He has called on outside nonprofit groups not to air ads in the presidential campaign. But his admonition has been aimed at groups that receive unlimited contributions, mostly from wealthy individuals. Political action committees, however, are restricted to receiving contributions of no more than $5,000.

The good news for little Alex is that our country has a volunteer military that will protect him until he is old enough to move to Canada.

The bad news is McCain can change it back to a draft if he is elected.

well in that case he can always be a draft dodger. That way he can come back when it 's over and enjoy the freedoms that all of our Brave young men fought for.

Tell that to the ones on their 5th trip over there and who have sky rocketing divorce and suicide rates.

And people like McCain who fear if they get education benefits big enough to actually get an education, they will all quit!

They signed on to protect our country, not EXXON or so BUSH could be a WAR president or to be an occupying force in a country that was no threat where its legal to kill the occupier, which is quite different than Germany or S. Korea... but then McCain knows as much histiory as BUSH does! They never signed on to die for BUSH's lies.

Whats with the scrubbing of comments?

Dumb ad. McCain will not be president when Alex is old enough to serve. It is a volunteer army. If Alex wants to sign up, Mommy won't be able to stop him. The only Senators calling for a draft are Rangel and John Kerry.

All that money Move On has and that is the best they can do?

Not for nothing, but if Alex's mom knew she was going to be video typed, she could have at least combed her hair. But, maybe she was so upset with the thought of her diapered baby going off to Iraq, she didn't want to think about herself...

To be honest, McCain has sent one son over to Iraq as a Marine (enlisted) and one is going over as an Officer (just commissioned). I think the whole "100 years" thing is way overblown (very much like the Rev. Wright crap) especially when you realize that he said it in the same context of our continued occupation of Germany, Korea and Japan. Given their ecocomic situation, I see no reason why these free-loading countries cannot take care of their own defense and send our troops home. I've served in the military and all three assignments are worthless and a waste of taxpayers money.
PS That's kind of rich...a Democrat ad highlighting the life of a baby.

I'll agree with you on the point that McCain's '100 years' comment has been taken out of context and strangled by the left wing in very much the same fashion as the right wing is known to do. I'll also agree that McCain genuinely believes that when he says the occupation would be very similar to that which was deployed in Korea, Germany etc. But here is the rub. That idea is in an of itself stupid. It exposes the fundamental misunderstanding John McCain has of this part of the world (Middle-East). There are far different political and more importantly, religious beliefs and ideals practiced in Iraq, say, than Germany. The predominantly christian Germans of the mid-20th century most likely had a far different view of, or perhaps simply a far different reaction to, their similarly christian occupiers - the US - than the predominantly islamic populace of Iraq has of their christian occupiers. So I will concede that although I dislike John McCain I think that his words were meant to be pragmatic and not evil. But I will not excuse his blatent ignorance of the middle east. As long as american troops are over there, they will be involved in some sort of combat operation. They don't want the invaders (US) taking over their home-land. It doesn't take a genius to understand this - just a democrat :P (Leiberman not included)

This ad fails because it promotes a selfish and self-centered point of view. Our commitment is to a better America and an end to the Iraq debacle. I have no respect for those not willing to sacrifice to achieve it.

Your post is crap! It was an illegal war, and the only possible solution is to bring the troops home.

You are absolutely NUTS if you think a parent's determination to keep their children out of an illegal and worthless war to be reduced to dead meat is "selfish". It''s no more selfish than protecting your family against murder.

I have people in Iraq, and believe it's a crime we're there at all. That said, I think the ad makes the wrong point. I'd be happy if the mother said Mc.C couldn't have her son for Iraq, because he would be too busy building a stronger America.

I believe the Iraq occupation is a crime, and a horrific waste of lives and treasure. That said, Americans who are working to end this so-called "war" and build a better America are willing to make sacrifices. The ad shows a mother who appears only concerned with herself and her son. That does a disservice - and sends the wrong message about - the people who are fighting and sacrificing to bring out country out of this mess.

Since you are crazy who cares what you respect?

Are you suggesting that we should continue to ship our children and money into the hole called Iraq?

Well then by all means sell YOUR children into the Army. You have no right to commit other peoples' children to an immoral and unjustified war of preemption. Bush's blundering and lying have condemned this country to poverty.

Geeez, are you out of touch! Unless it's someone they know or are relatied to, Americans don't give a ch*t about who's dying in Iraq. They sure don't give a ch*t about the millions of dead Iraqi's or the thousands of Iraqi refugees. Yet some who are not totally immersed in narcisistic, so-called American culture may just barely relate to a mother protecting her baby.

When will everyone stop being so intentionally disingenuous about the '100 years' bit? The man CLEARLY said he anticipates a PRESENCE in Iraq similar to the ones we have, and have had for decades, in countless other countries. Nobody every complains about our bases in Japan, right? Well that's what he was envisioning. It's abundantly obvious if you listen to the whole clip. Geez.

100 peaceful years in Iraq is what's disingenuous. The British had a long occupation of Iraq, it was a bloody disaster every step of the way until they decided to prop up a strongman king, declare victory and leave. 5 years in Iraq is nothing. 25 years is still nothing. Iraq will always be like this, and it's painfully naive or simply untruthful to anticipate a long term occupation in Iraq without an ongoing low level insurgency punctuated by outbursts of raging violence.

Nope the point is that we do listen and everything is taped these days. His point on Iraq was that we would have an easy victory and a few years to get the job done. He has been deluded all along so why should we care what his visions are?

"Nobody every complains about our bases in Japan, right? " Wrong!

We shouldn't be in Iraq another damned day (something Obama unfortunately disagrees with!) And as for bases in Japan, Germany, South Korea (and all the other examples McSame likes to point to) I'm complaining (along with many other Americans, and citizens of those country's). We've got the best equipped, most mobile army in history, and those bases are a useless waste of our tax payer money to full the military industrial complex!

We didn't have bases in Asia and Europe when we decided to enter WW2 yet we still kicked their asses. Give me one example of when one of our foreign military bases were used in fighting a just war.

"When will everyone stop being so intentionally disingenuous about the '100 years' bit?

The point is, in order to accomplish what McCain wants to accomplish (peace keeping forces in Iraq) it means this war has to continue. And looking at the current state of affairs we a long way from anything that McCain is visioning. First we don't have the money, second our military is at the breaking point. And three (most important ) unlike Japan and Germany THEY DON'T WANT US THERE! If you remember this middle east back lash and anti - American sentiment started because we set up bases in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. They've made it pretty dam clear that as long as we are in their countries they will fight to the bitter end. How many different ways does someone have to ask you to leave when you were never welcome in the first place?

You don't have to join now. But our military is strained and we cannot keep up the demands we are placing on them. So somehting has got to give if we are hell bent on staying in a country that does not want us, did not invite us, but one we invaded without any provocaton. So a draft cannot be takin off the table which means young mothers could be in jeopardy of having their children eventually be required to fight in Irag. We did it in the 60's and it could happen again.

What a lousy ad. It fails almost every possible reality test.

1) Our military is a volunteer force. So nobody can "steal" your child away. Well, if Dems got their way and implemented a draft that could change, but I don't see how McCain's to blame for that.

2) The kid is like 1 year old. Even if McCain were elected and served two full terms, he would be long gone before Alex was old enough to volunteer in the military.

3) If there is still conflict in Iraq 18 years from now, it will most likely be due to a failed attempt to cut and run instead of finishing the job, followed by a power vaccum to be filled by Islamic extremists, which completely destabilizes the Middle East and continues to cause conflict for decades.

Get rid of this worthless ad as soon as possible and fire the writers.

I was watching Morning Joe on MSNBC this morning and Mika Brezinski was criticizing this ad on grounds that the dems had overdone the attack on McCain's "100 years of war" comment.

That really bothers me because McCain only very recently, in response from a question from Matt Lauer, I believe, said that it didn't matter how long we stayed in Iraq, what mattered was bringing down the casualties. McCain went on to say we have troops in Germany, Japan and Korea.

Well, excuse me, Mika, but I believe that our troops in Germany have been there for 64 years. That is not very far from 100 years, is it? So why are we treating McCain's 100 years war as if it were some off hand comment that we should not be taking serioiusly. MC CAIN IS SERIOUS WHEN HE TALKS ABOUT STAYING IN IRAQ 100 YEARS. PERIOD.
