WASHINGTON — A major labor union and the liberal organization MoveOn.org are joining forces to air a provocative new ad portraying John McCain's Iraq policy as a prolonged presence that would involve a new generation of Americans.

Paid for by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and by MoveOn.org, the commercial represents an expansion by Democratic-leaning groups of a campaign against McCain. It also targets one of McCain's major assets _ his public credibility on national security issues.

The ad will begin airing nationally Wednesday on CNN and MSNBC, and in Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin markets. It will run for a week at a cost of $543,000. In the ad, an actress with an infant child speaks as if she were addressing McCain, the likely Republican presidential nominee.

"Hi John McCain," she says. "This is Alex. And he's my first. So far his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. And so, John McCain, when you say you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can't have him."

McCain has stressed that his goal is to reduce American casualties, shift security missions to Iraqis and, ultimately, have a non-combat U.S. troop presence in Iraq similar to that in South Korea. He has speculated that such a presence could last 100 years or more.

Last week, McCain aired his own commercial where he asserts, "I hate war." The ad is biographical, recalling his family's military service and his more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

The campaign referred questions about the ad to the Republican National Committee, which said the country needs a president who listens to his commanders, not partisan groups like MoveOn.org. "Bringing peace and security to Iraq will require a commander in chief who won't allow partisanship to cloud his judgment," said spokesman Alex Conant.

Polls show that while a large majority of the public opposes the war, they split almost evenly between McCain and his likely Democratic opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, over who would better handle Iraq.

"The ad aims to give voice to so many people who are frustrated that we seem to be stuck in Iraq," said Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's executive director. "It speaks to the worry that people have that we'll be sending another generation of young men and women to Iraq if we continue."

The AFSCME-MoveOn effort unites two forces that were on opposite camps during the Democratic primary. AFSCME backed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, while MoveOn backed Obama, who clinched the nomination this month.

Paul Booth, executive assistant to AFSCME President Gerald W. McEntee, said the union has not yet endorsed Obama but said the ad illustrates "progressive forces coming together of the same mind about McCain."

MoveOn and AFSCME are paying for the ads through federally regulated political action committees.

Obama does not accept financial contributions from political action committees. He has called on outside nonprofit groups not to air ads in the presidential campaign. But his admonition has been aimed at groups that receive unlimited contributions, mostly from wealthy individuals. Political action committees, however, are restricted to receiving contributions of no more than $5,000.

The ad is fine. It's aimed at women, and is fairly effective because it does two things:

1. It reinforces the emotional and maternal repulsion to war

2. More subtly, it hints toward a future where America's children are taken for John McCain's warlust - in other words, a draft to cover the troup need.

Will it satisfy everyone? Of course not. Might it help solidify anti-McCain sentiment among people who react emotionally? Certainly.

I love the ad but the Dems have done very, very little, almost nothing at all, to get us out of Iraq and they have given Bush absolutely everything he ever asked for to keep the war going.

As far as I can tell, the Dems really want me to vote for Nader.

John McCain will not have my daughters either...My partner served 10 years in the Navy, my father 5 years in the Air Force and my brother 6 years in the Navy during the gulf war. We all agree that our government has failed our men and women in uniform....we should not send one son or daughter into war or harms way without a damn good reason. But the fact remains that this nation was LIED to in order to invade/occupy Iraq. McCain even admitted it was over oil...greed is not a reason for war. We truly hoped that one day our children would enter the service (we feel strongly that the military is an excellent way to learn many life lessons/experience)...but not if our leaders are going to be careless and reckless with their lives as this Administration has done. My heart goes out to those who are serving and for those at home who must be worried out of their minds every day they go without a call or letter...there are no words I can express to adequately convey how utterly heart sick I am for those that have lost a loved one in this god forsaken war. To think...many of those faces we see flash on the screen...the faces we honor...were but children 8 years ago...not much older than 11....

It's harsh, but you know what? How about the soldiers killed just this month in this obscenity in Iraq? Weren't they someone's little Alex just a few years ago? Does McCain even know their names? Does he give them a second thought?

I don't find it that stupid ... George W Bush has yet to attend one single funeral of a fallen hero for a war that was futile and ill conceived.

These men in Washington have absolutely no idea what Birthdays and Christmas' are like for these families that have been left behind, the cloud that hangs over those homes is dark and black ... this election matters because ... Yes, people like John will kill little Alex and not even blink.

This ad is clearly aimed directly at Suburban Mom's and appears to be a pretty effective reminder to those Suburban Women Voters that yes - John McCain has plans for the babies being held in their mothers arms right now - he is more than willing to send them off to be killed in this war that he thinks is just so damn important.

McCain was wrong about how important Vietnam was and apparently he didn't learn his lesson then because he is repeating it now.

First, I have to comment on the selective deletion - or rejection - of posts. There are some truly embarassing stuff on this blog...
Now to my point. I see again that Senator McCain's 100 year comment taken out of context. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Stop being so righteously indignant at Michelle Obama's pride in America comment being taken out of context. By doing the same thing (over and over again) it opens the door for the Republicans.

I'm pretty sure they do not need or care about that open door, but Democrats loose the moral high ground. It is not something I want to relinquish.

What a lame ad. There are so many issues to attack McCain on that doesn't involve this overused "100 yr. in Iraq" line. How about issues affecting people right now. Moveon spends money on the dumbest stuff sometimes. yawnnn.

I've really reached the point where I am terribly discouraged at how many Americans - despite all our hard work - just don't get the reality. It's a war for oil. Rich kids don't die there. The MSM is an utter and complete joke. Imagine a poor working class person with no health insurance and three soldier age kids - who wants to vote for McBush saying he is a great hero! OMG! Talk about "Manufactured Consent"!

John McCain is perfect for the 16th Century:
- He believes in death after life
- He does not know how to use the internet
- Globalization is as foreign a term as his ideas about the economy
- The only insights he gets are those that come through PTSD
- When he hears the name Blackberry he ask, "have I met that guy before?"
- Tele- prompt? Tele - Who?
McCain...? We cannot teach old dogs, new tricks.

Comments from two kind of people. A growing amount of Americans that are out spoken as individuals against Bush/McCain type solutions to our and world problems and those others, the ones that show up only because the Bush/McCain type people pay them. I always thought that working for a collection agency had to be one of the worst jobs and I used to be a farmer and had to clean barns and corrals. Getting manure on you is easy to wash off but what do you do about what happens to your brain when you take money to harm your fellows and your own future generations? We need to call our troops home and down size our military and get rid of black water. Lets fix what is broken with our military starting at the top and working our way down to the equipment. Our diplomatic corp could use a work over also. This ad took $543,000 to run, lets get back control of our airways again and force the networks to provide some time for our political system. Allowing these political pirates to charge what ever they want only benefits the corrupt wealthy in our nation.

Expect McCain to go full-bore negative in the next two weeks.

The state polls on McCain v Obama have to scare Republicans to death.

Forget the national head to head match ups. This is about electoral votes.

John McCain is behind Obama in Virginia. A w/in margin or error dead heat in North Carolina. He's only up 9 points ahead in Arkansas, for goodness sakes. Arkansas.

As of today, McCain's WAY behind Obama in Ohio.

This was NOT the conventional wisdom.

I like this ad for several reasons. It puts a human face on this war and what it does and will cost. It also puts a voice to the concerns parents have if things continue. Yes kids grow up and some might choose to join the military. Yes we should be respectful of those that put their life on the line.

That isn't what this ad is about. It's about the fears parents, especially mothers, have that their children might be FORCED to fight. That is a real concern that shouldn't be downplayed and shouldn't be looked down upon by acting as if it is disrespecting the troops since it isn't. If McCain wants to continue things and even start trouble with Iran and who knows what other country you will have to bring back the draft in order to have the bodies to do it. It's simply a numbers situation. People will be reluctant to joining willingly or to return if their time is up when the death toll keeps increasing and the money earned verse risk doesn't match.

The use of a real baby isn't at issue here nor should it matter. The ad was to the point and touched upon a real and true concern that is out there. It put a voice and a narrative to an important issue that is on the minds of parents with young children and those that are looking forward to having children of their own in the future.
