McClatchy Newspapers:

The U.S. military hid the locations of suspected terrorist detainees and concealed harsh treatment to avoid the scrutiny of the International Committee of the Red Cross, according to documents that a Senate committee released Tuesday.

"We may need to curb the harsher operations while ICRC is around. It is better not to expose them to any controversial techniques," Lt. Col. Diane Beaver, a military lawyer who's since retired, said during an October 2002 meeting at the Guantanamo Bay prison to discuss employing interrogation techniques that some have equated with torture. Her comments were recorded in minutes of the meeting that were made public Tuesday. At that same meeting, Beaver also appeared to confirm that U.S. officials at another detention facility -- Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan -- were using sleep deprivation to "break" detainees well before then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld approved that technique. "True, but officially it is not happening," she is quoted as having said.

A third person at the meeting, Jonathan Fredman, the chief counsel for the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, disclosed that detainees were moved routinely to avoid the scrutiny of the ICRC, which keeps tabs on prisoners in conflicts around the world.

I think Gitmo would make an ideal site for the Bush presidential library.

What about this administration does not scream treason and war crimes????

The rest of the world is far ahead of US in understanding the nature of BushCo.

That we continue to enable & fund these fascists says much about who we are.

Our corporatist MSM is guilty of deceiving the populace here but we are liable for

the death of a million Muslims and our transgressions will not be forgotten!!!!!!!!

Nothing about this administration doesn't scream treason and war crimes.

The rest of the world has a functioning media - at least so far as non-domestic subjects go.

"We" don't continue to enable and fund the fascists - Nancy Pelosi does. The reason Congress' approval rating is even lower than Juniors is because we expected the Ds to DO SOMETHING about it, not put it "off the table."

BTW, if you want to help right that wrong, please contribute to Nancy's removal in the upcoming November election: CindyForCongress.org

Our fascist media IS guilty of deceiving the populace, just as in Germany in the late 30s, and, as then, it's not the populace who are liable but the leadership who are responsible for the deaths of so many of so many different groups.

_WE_ should never forget this disaster, just as Germany shouldn't forget what their leadership did...

When hell freezes over or when the Democratic Party gets some spine.

Unfortunately, both may seem unlikely any time soon, but there is hope.

When the military takes things into there own hands and goes into the White House and drags them out. Remember that many of the detainees were turned in for cash payouts by the CIA. Innocent people being tortured by the country that is founded on individual rights. We have turned into the British Empire and we are going bancrupt just like they did. Morally and economically.

yep that is why we must experience our own karma and lessons.

humans very seldom learn from others mistakes

that is the whole purpose of human life: to learn

we will suffer greatly as a nation for our imperialism but we will learn

we may become a second rate nation but what is important is the learning.

Diane Beaver probably has to watch where she travels. It would appear from the article that she may be guilty of war crimes; a number of countries claim jurisdiction over all war criminals.

Happen to recall which countries these are? We need Junior to visit there before he leaves office. He's on his "farewell tour" now, I think...

So? It's not like we're the first one doing it. The Nazis were doing it too. And the Soviets. And the Khmer Rouge. See, we're A-OK.

Just thought you'd like to know....
In 2002 Cheney, on behalf of our country, withdrew the United Staes from the World Court.
They now have no jurisdiction over the Bush Crime Family.
Think these guys were planning ahead?

This administration and alll who assist it in these barbaric activities must be held accountable. No wonder the world dislikes us so much. We can only voice our opinions so the rest of the world knows that we do not condone the actions of this rogue, inhumane administration. Impeachment has gone to the Judicial Committee. This time, it must be acted upon.

Never going to happen. Kucinich's proposal will fade away in committee.
Without 16 Repub votes, which you KNOW can't be scrounged up, it will die in the Senate.

As I read this, all I can think of is how the Nazis fooled the Red Cross at Theresienstadt.

Another page from the Hitler play book with a BushCo twist.

You're just a hopeless cynic. Bushco just didn't want the Red Cross to see how well the prisoners were treated. Bad for their tough-guy image, y'know.

I was just thinking the same thing. Very sad. But what else can you expect from an administration that wanted write discrimination against a certain class of Americans into the US Constitutition as recently as 2004. Remember the Federal Marriage Amendment?

nancy has taken impeachment off the table...is`t this a war crime? or it just a misunderstanding......

is there really any difference between the democratic cowards and the ass kissing republicans that support these criminals?
