WASHINGTON — A defiant Barack Obama said Tuesday he would take no lectures from Republicans on which candidate would keep the U.S. safer, a sharp rebuke to John McCain's aides who said the Democrat had a naive, Sept. 10 mind-set toward terrorism.

"These are the same guys who helped to engineer the distraction of the war in Iraq at a time when we could have pinned down the people who actually committed 9/11," the presumed nominee told reporters aboard his campaign plane. "This is the same kind of fear-mongering that got us into Iraq ... and it's exactly that failed foreign policy I want to reverse."

The debate between the rival camps echoed the 2004 presidential campaign in which President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other Republicans argued that Democratic nominee John Kerry was soft on terror, a claim that resonated with voters and helped propel Bush to re-election. Democrats complained that the GOP was using the politics of fear.

The Republican argument proved less effective in 2006 when then Bush adviser Karl Rove said the Democrats had a pre-Sept. 11 view of the world and Republicans had a post-Sept. 11 terror attacks perspective. In November of that year, Democrats captured enough congressional seats to seize control of the House and Senate.

On his campaign plane, Obama told reporters that Osama bin Laden is still at large in part because Bush's strategy toward fighting terror has not succeeded.

At issue were comments Obama made in an interview with ABC News Monday in which he spoke approvingly of the successful prosecution and imprisonment of those responsible for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Obama was asked how he could be sure the Bush administration's anti-terrorism policies are not crucial to protecting U.S. citizens.

Obama said the government can crack down on terrorists "within the constraints of our Constitution." He mentioned the indefinite detention of Guantanamo Bay detainees, contrasting their treatment with the prosecution of the 1993 World Trade Center bombings.

"And, you know, let's take the example of Guantanamo," Obama said. "What we know is that, in previous terrorist attacks _ for example, the first attack against the World Trade Center _ we were able to arrest those responsible, put them on trial. They are currently in U.S. prisons, incapacitated.

Story continues below

"And the fact that the administration has not tried to do that has created a situation where not only have we never actually put many of these folks on trial, but we have destroyed our credibility when it comes to rule of law all around the world, and given a huge boost to terrorist recruitment in countries that say, 'Look, this is how the United States treats Muslims. ...

"We could have done the exact same thing, but done it in a way that was consistent with our laws," Obama said.

Obama agreed with the Supreme Court ruling last week that detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have a constitutional right to challenge their indefinite imprisonment in U.S. civilian courts. McCain derided the ruling as "one of the worst decisions in the history of this country."

McCain aides criticized Obama for talking about using the criminal justice system to prosecute terrorists.

"Senator Obama is a perfect manifestation a September 10th mind-set ... He does not understand the nature of the enemies we face," McCain national security director Randy Scheunemann told reporters on a conference call.

Former CIA Director James Woolsey, who is advising the McCain campaign, concurred, saying Obama has "an extremely dangerous and extremely naive approach toward terrorism ... and toward dealing with prisoners captured overseas who have been engaged in terrorist attacks against the United States."

The Obama campaign countered with its own conference call in which Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Richard Clarke, a counterterrorism official in Republican and Democratic administrations, argued the McCain campaign was emulating Rove.

"I'm a little disgusted by the attempts of some of my friends on the McCain campaign to use the same old, tired tactics ... to drive a wedge between Americans for partisan advantage and to frankly frighten Americans," Clarke said.

Kerry accused McCain of "defending a policy that is indefensible" by siding with Bush's policies, particularly with respect to the Iraq war.

Obama said Republicans could be counted on to do "what they've done every election cycle, which is to use terrorism as club to make the American people afraid to win elections." He said he didn't think it would work this time.

Republicans criticized Obama last year when he said the United States should act on intelligence about top terrorist targets in Pakistan even if President Pervez Musharraf refuses.

Trolls will be trolls but I noticed a exceptionally low enthusiasm gap with their candidate. At least trolls once in a while would try to say something good about Bush but the trolls almost act like McBush does not exist and all the election is about is keeping Obama out of the white house. Even one of the pundits noticed that this whole election is all about Obama on either side. I know the election is still months away but it just seems like their is no fire in the right wing pundits defending McBush. They only light up when they think they have something on Obama.

I think McPander's latest flip flop on offshore drilling might have a little bit of legs only because it has seemed to energize some of the right wing base. It does not matter that oil companies will not even drill where they already have leases in place because the last thing they want is for oil prices to go down. I heard Bush is going to push offshore drilling and ANWR drilling in front of congress tomorrow so any little bounce McPander might get from his base might drop with independents. I think McPander pushed the wrong area to drill though it would have been safer for him to say we should drill in ANWR than offshore because there may be a backlash in coastal states like FL, VA, NC and NJ.

The facts are the facts.
The man wasn't a priority after they thought they could salvage their reputation of ineptness by being "liberators".

Failures from, to borrow a phrase, day one.

October Surprise:

They find Osama hiding in plain site in a cave somewhere. Unfortunately, he is dead, or dies in the capture. Bush claims major victory in War on Terror, Media hails him as hero, and America forgives all of his incompetence and sins.

Reality: they thaw Osama from cold storage. Place him in a cave set up especially with lights (so the cameras can see), and place Osama's body. They "find" him, and Bush steps forward saying that this is a major victory, and is the result of his efforts for the past 7 years.

(Something similar to how they "found" Sadamm - ie, they knew where he was, put him in a hole, the military called the media, and then "found" him and drags him out. Or similar to Jessica Lynch, where that was manufactured as well).

End result: America eats it up (like every other major piece of propaganda), we all forget the evil actions and incompetence of BushCo, don't realize that we're being played like a two-bit guitar. And a national amnesia settles in, and we're back to our militant ways. Democrats role over and take it up the rear -- smiling for the cameras.

Woo woo wooo, GO USA, USA, USA, USA!!!

I'd be apt to agree if it was 2004. bush wouldn't wait until after office to catch bin laden- where would his glory be?

OBL is free because Bill Clinton didn't do his job. OBL was essentially handed to him, and he backed away from the offer. I believe at the time he was otherwise "engaged", and probably wasn't thinking clearly.

One of the first acts by Dubya when he took office was to dismantle the submarine picket in the Gulf that was waiting to put a cruise missile on Osama if he poked his head up. Bill left an open order to kill that SOB and made several solid attempts to do just that.... Dubya and Condi and Rummy and co decided that ObL didn't represent a credible threat and ignored intelligence that suggested otherwise.... nice try, NotPC.... but if the GOP hadn't been so busy impeaching Bill for a blowjob the entire inner beltway could have been better focused... of course, now that the GOPs man has proven to be a true criminal, liar and idiot the GOP have no intention of seeing their man held accountable....

Bin Laden was not "handed" to Clinton. Bin Laden was in Sudan at the time, 1995-96, but there was no legal indictment of him on any charge, so it would have been impossible legally to bring him here. That only came after the embassy bombings in 1998, when he had moved to Afghanistan at the invitation of the Taliban. More right wing rewriting of history.

Osama bin Laden was indicted by the Justice Department in 1993. Funny, Senator Obama failed to mention that the DNC tactics failed to bring him in either.

All right Einstein, you seem to be having a hard time following the thread so I'll break it down for you. First, let's start with the title of this blog "Obama: GOP Tactics the Reason Bin Laden is Still Free".

You still with me?

You do recall that the Chief executive of the United States in 1993 was Bill Clinton? You also recall that in 1993 the DNC has a strong majority in the House and Senate?

If this is news to you, read no further. You're beyond hope. Otherwise...

In the same vein that the authors of this blog suggest that Obama condemns "GOP tactics" I ask why does he also not condemn failed "DNC tactics."

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:35 PM on 06/17/2008

Well, it's not to late. I suggest we send the DNC out to get him right now.

i believe this whole argument started when the rethugs said they were tougher on terrorism. with the free pass they have given bin laden, and the cushy first-class plane seats they gave his family to flee the US a couple days after 9/11, i'd say they failed.

With the way they have bedpost national security and the fight against florists, the GOP has absolutely no standing to speak on these Matisse's. They should be censored. I know this may be a tad incant to point out - but 9-11 happened on GOP watch. 8-9 months after they were notified as to the biggest threats facing the country and one feather month after bush was presented with a documented entitled "Bin Laden Dieted to Attack in the US." Further, on the GOP watch, the incredible waste of money and manometer.

If we only had a responsible press Obama would be laughed off his press plane when he insists on demonstrating his naivete when he pontificates on issues like this and energy.
He's a lighter than helium lightweight.

And I guess Bush and McCain are the heavyweights of the world. Maybe they are and that's why our economy is so weighted down with paying for a war that we can barely live the decent lives we use too.
So much for your kind of heavyweights.

The only time the constitution will matter to you is when you or one of your family memeber's constitutional rights have been violated, only then will you learn how important it is to protect it.

O'Bama has generated an historical political renaisance in America, stim ulating unprecedented levels of voter and media participation. Whereas only 30% turnout is typical, this election cycle looks like maybe only 30% WILL NOT turn out.

we need the oil. How much less oil product are you willing to do without as sacrifice to support your opinion? It is called putting-your-money-where-your-mouth-is.

We are trapped in C heney oil-geopolitics and until we develop alternatives, including personal sacrifice and conservation, there is no simple answer.

Other than that your sentiment is understood and accepted.

Wake up. The Bush family and the Bin Laden family are business partners. Bush and the Saudis want the price of oil high and have conspired to keep Iraqi oil off the world market to limit supply.
