WASHINGTON — A defiant Barack Obama said Tuesday he would take no lectures from Republicans on which candidate would keep the U.S. safer, a sharp rebuke to John McCain's aides who said the Democrat had a naive, Sept. 10 mind-set toward terrorism.

"These are the same guys who helped to engineer the distraction of the war in Iraq at a time when we could have pinned down the people who actually committed 9/11," the presumed nominee told reporters aboard his campaign plane. "This is the same kind of fear-mongering that got us into Iraq ... and it's exactly that failed foreign policy I want to reverse."

The debate between the rival camps echoed the 2004 presidential campaign in which President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and other Republicans argued that Democratic nominee John Kerry was soft on terror, a claim that resonated with voters and helped propel Bush to re-election. Democrats complained that the GOP was using the politics of fear.

The Republican argument proved less effective in 2006 when then Bush adviser Karl Rove said the Democrats had a pre-Sept. 11 view of the world and Republicans had a post-Sept. 11 terror attacks perspective. In November of that year, Democrats captured enough congressional seats to seize control of the House and Senate.

On his campaign plane, Obama told reporters that Osama bin Laden is still at large in part because Bush's strategy toward fighting terror has not succeeded.

At issue were comments Obama made in an interview with ABC News Monday in which he spoke approvingly of the successful prosecution and imprisonment of those responsible for the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Obama was asked how he could be sure the Bush administration's anti-terrorism policies are not crucial to protecting U.S. citizens.

Obama said the government can crack down on terrorists "within the constraints of our Constitution." He mentioned the indefinite detention of Guantanamo Bay detainees, contrasting their treatment with the prosecution of the 1993 World Trade Center bombings.

"And, you know, let's take the example of Guantanamo," Obama said. "What we know is that, in previous terrorist attacks _ for example, the first attack against the World Trade Center _ we were able to arrest those responsible, put them on trial. They are currently in U.S. prisons, incapacitated.

"And the fact that the administration has not tried to do that has created a situation where not only have we never actually put many of these folks on trial, but we have destroyed our credibility when it comes to rule of law all around the world, and given a huge boost to terrorist recruitment in countries that say, 'Look, this is how the United States treats Muslims. ...

"We could have done the exact same thing, but done it in a way that was consistent with our laws," Obama said.

Obama agreed with the Supreme Court ruling last week that detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have a constitutional right to challenge their indefinite imprisonment in U.S. civilian courts. McCain derided the ruling as "one of the worst decisions in the history of this country."

McCain aides criticized Obama for talking about using the criminal justice system to prosecute terrorists.

"Senator Obama is a perfect manifestation a September 10th mind-set ... He does not understand the nature of the enemies we face," McCain national security director Randy Scheunemann told reporters on a conference call.

Former CIA Director James Woolsey, who is advising the McCain campaign, concurred, saying Obama has "an extremely dangerous and extremely naive approach toward terrorism ... and toward dealing with prisoners captured overseas who have been engaged in terrorist attacks against the United States."

The Obama campaign countered with its own conference call in which Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Richard Clarke, a counterterrorism official in Republican and Democratic administrations, argued the McCain campaign was emulating Rove.

"I'm a little disgusted by the attempts of some of my friends on the McCain campaign to use the same old, tired tactics ... to drive a wedge between Americans for partisan advantage and to frankly frighten Americans," Clarke said.

Kerry accused McCain of "defending a policy that is indefensible" by siding with Bush's policies, particularly with respect to the Iraq war.

Obama said Republicans could be counted on to do "what they've done every election cycle, which is to use terrorism as club to make the American people afraid to win elections." He said he didn't think it would work this time.

Republicans criticized Obama last year when he said the United States should act on intelligence about top terrorist targets in Pakistan even if President Pervez Musharraf refuses.

Obama knows that the Republicans' biggest, baddest weapon in their political arsenal is fear. Fear of another 9/11 type attack, a rouge nuke in the hands of a jihadist or an "inexperienced, different than us" black presidential candidate. There are a couple of ways to combat this tactic: You can not address it and stick to your message and ideas. We saw how well this worked for Kerry; You can try and "out macho" them. This comes across for what it is; phoney and a bad sales pitch; Or, you can expose them and their arguments for what they are; contrived facades made to keep them in power at the expense of everyone and everything else. Obama is doing the smart thing by pulling back the curtain to expose the little man behind it.

And his wording was extremely clever. He's sending the corrupt administration and their CIA lackeys a message with these words... "In part because of their failed strategies, we’ve got bin Laden still sending out audio tapes, so I don’t think they have much standing to suggest that they’ve learned a lot of lessons from 9/11.”

DO THIS!...Offer 1(one) billion dollars DEAD not alive (no questions asked), for Osama Bin Laden. That's 1/12 of the cost for operations in IRAQ for one month. Even his loyal followers would "klip" his head off for that amount of money. Or, perhaps Blackwater would do it, instead of killing innocents....

GO OBAMA.

Come on you hard working main-stream Republicans (the real ones that work like the rest of us, not live off a trust fund) come on and join us liberals and lets all see if we can't be ONE AMERICA again! United as a country, united against terrorism, united for the future of our kids and grandkids.

We can The United States of America once more, vote Obama!

Obama: He isn't God, but he is Good!

Hope is coming.

Ya gotta LOVE how quickly Obama smacks back. Unlike the past couple of Democratic presidential nominees, Barack proves every day that he gives as good as he gets. No, make that, he gives better than he gets!

I'm loving this guy's take-no-crap-from-the-Republiscum-attack-machine attitude.

McCain is in for some pretty tough hand-to-hand combat this year. The old man is clearly not up to it!

And therein lies the rub. The Repuglicans have NO CLUE as to how to deal with someone who's just going to take the issue at hand FROM them, and then proceed to beat seven shades of shit out of them with it. I'm actually finding it a little comical to watch because the GOP is fucking DUMBFOUNDED by this guy.
The first time I heard him speak, I thought to myself, the GOP is FUCKED come November if America can look past "a black man in the White House", and elect this guy.

Obama is way tougher than the conventional democrat and quite frankly, the Republicans' worst nightmare. He is happy to discuss security, religion, and family. John McBush has a lot on his plate and it is not a happy feast.

MoveOn is great for mobilzing the base, but I actually think the right has effectively smeared it enough that it's actually a turn off for moderates and independents, so I wouldn't reference it too much in a general election. While I admire a great many activist things they do, I also think they tend to go overboard, and their loose cannon, shoot from the hip style turns as many people off as it turns off.

Obama is great at the counterpunch. He excels at it. McCain tries to attack the security credentials of Obama and Obama always uses it as an opportunity to remind us that McCain's bunch lied us into an unnecessary war. Go Obama!!

IT'S ABOUT TIME I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR 7 YEARS...!

It's worse than that Bush let bin-Laden escape and why would anyone ever give al-Qaeda a truce..?

Bush gave them a truce and allowed them to escape any idiot would have known there truce was to buy time to escape and make a deal with the tribal leaders it's in and Koran as a standard tactic...

The Democrats have let the GOP and Bush get away with allow 9/11 and then that they knew how to handle the aftermath which they completely screwed up...

All our international wars were fought by Democratic Presidents not Republicans...

Bush let them attack, then let Osama bin-Laden and Zawahiri and Mullah Omar get away...

You're in the right ballpark Gladys. The bin Ladens and the Bushes are practically blood relatives. No way was Bush going to let cousin Osama get caught. After all, it would be bad for the Crime Family's business.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:48 PM on 06/17/2008

Close but no cigar. The Bush administration is best understood when you realize that Bush is the head of Al Qaeda.

Nuts you say? Then who funded the start up terrorist organization called Al Qaeda? Yep, George Bush, Sr. He used $250 million from the CIA to fight to the Russkies in Afghanistan.

Rather than let it blowback, Bush43 took over and used 9/11 as the new Pearl Harbor. It's all hidden in plain view.

What would you charge Osama Bin Laden with? It's not so hard to figure out why you need the "enemy combatant" label for muslims who don't care for your brand of "democracy". It's sort of like saying the Injuns are on the war path. It's code for "these are the ones who aren't going to just roll over and let you take over their country".

I'd like to see the reaction if some other country shock and awed us. How many "enemy combatants" would there be roaming the countyside, armed and ready to kill the first invader they see?

It all depends on your point of view. I'd wager there isn't one iota of real, physical evidence that connects Bin Laden to any terrorist attack anywhere.

Most of us knew that he had to keep his powder dry while campaigning in the primary opposite Hillary. He could not attack Hillary the way he is going to hit - McCain.

Every direct attack on Hillary created a instant backlash and unintended drama.

As much as I really like Obama, I worry that he may be asking for more than he can handle with too tough on the Osama Bin Laden issue, because it's something by which he'll be judged during his Presidency. He's positioned himself in the seemeingly contradictory role as the anti-war candidate but one whose "judgement" will lead to the capture or death of Osama Bin Laden. How does he resolve the Osama issue? Full-scale redeployment of already exhausted troops? Or does he resort to the Tom Clancy-ish neocon fantasy of dropping "special forces" on top of terrorist camps and "taking out" the enemy? Finding Osama is infinitely more difficult than capturing Saddam. As removed as the war may be from most Americans, it's resolution is not an easy matter and may prove far more difficult than most of us are willing to accept.

You can be anti-war and still want to capture criminals and lead them to justice. The two are not mutually exclusive.

He is not anti war, he is anti IRAQ WAR. He has said he would "getting out of Iraq and on the right battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan" http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2007/08/01/obama-would-take-war-on-terror-into-pakistan/

Many people (especially our foolish friends on the right) like to believe that if he is elected, he will be the one that will be watching when AQ is in every neighborhood in America. This is not true, he wants to do the right thing, and get out of Iraq, and get back into the fight against AQ.

If we leave Iraq, we can send more troops elsewhere in the world. It would still be more of a break for soldiers than Iraq is.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:50 PM on 06/17/2008

we will have to bring troops home rest them for 12 months

before sending them out

or shift troops from Nato deployments and move some of the Iraq troops for light duty
or train other NATO troops for Afghanistan and Iraq

on thing is clear those guys in Iraq have to get some rest or sent else where and let them decompress because I am not sure going straight home is what they need long term

The neo-cons have never wanted to find bin Laden. Why do you think they let him off the hook in Tora Bora? His continued presence makes the neo-cons(in their simple minds) viable. He justifies their whole obsession with defense contracts and phony wars. We've been behind bin Laden from the beginning of jihad in Afghanistan in the 80's.

It's not as simple as that. It's true that they don't really want to catch him, but it's hard to catch someone who's presumed to be already dead by the larger intelligence community, doctored tapes not withstanding.

The adage "you can't put toothpaste back in the tube" applies to capturing Bin Laden. With our troops and resources in Afghanistan we had a pretty decent shot at finding him. Once we pulled the majority of these out to move into Iraq our chances became very slim. Even if President Obama cannot locate Bin Laden that does not mean he failed. The situation is contextual. This administration had the opportunity to legimately find him and they didn't. The opportunity isn't just going to "reappear" once a new President is elected. Bush and Co. let the toothpaste out of the tube and they are the ones who should be held responsible, not the next person who inherits the tube.
