Barack Obama: Lay Off My Family

On the same day that former GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee told his party that demonizing Barack Obama is a 'fatal mistake,' Obama told a reporter from CBN news that the GOP needs to lay off his family. Read part of the transcript below and watch the interview here.

Obama told CBN News that he is deeply disappointed that John McCain has not spoken out against political attacks leveled at his wife.

"I think families are off limits. I would never consider making Cindy McCain a campaign issue," he said. "And if I saw people doing that - I would speak out against it. And the fact that I haven't seen that from John McCain I think is a deep disappointment."

The McCain campaign sent CBN News a written response to Obama's comments.

"Senator McCain agrees with Senator Obama that spouses should not be an issue in this campaign, and he has stated that position frequently," Joe Pounder, McCain's spokesman, said. "Unfortunately, when the Democratic National Committee was attacking Mrs. McCain, Senator Obama was not strong enough to stand up and speak out."

"Obama's silence speaks volumes, and it's unfortunate that he would single out others for a standard he himself has failed to live up to," he said.

Given her background, the McCain campaign ought to be very careful trotting Cindy out to criticize Michelle Obama. After all, Cindy ought to be proud of her country, given that it decided not to prosecute her for her transgressions.

I hate to say it, but McCain and his crew will continue to attack Michelle.

McCain has attacked his own wife in public (the C word), and disrespected and cheated on his first wife because she gained some weight after her car accident which left her disabled.

If McCain has no respect for either of his wives, and opts to villify them rather than protect them, then we should not expect him to have respect for or stop the attacks on Michelle.

Just today Cindy herself attacked Michelle ..........­. These attacks will continue because the McCains with all of their money are not as decent and cultured as the Obamas.

That is the point. Cindy was never attacked by Obama. The campaign attacked McCain for campaign mischief in utilizing her plane. The attack was not directed at Cindy.
But, since this is silly season and the Repugs are desperate, you see them lying about Obama attacking her, when all along the attack was leveled at McCain.

The mistake for McCain isn't that his refusal to condemn right-wing radio makes him look ineffective and weak, it's that he's allowing Obama to have an opportunity to portray himself as the opposite of Michael Dukakis, (and by implication, Willie Horton).

It was the impression that Dukakis didn't have the stones to protect even his wife (an by implication the country) that killed his chances. Every day Obama stands up and says "Lay off my wife" is a day that the idea that Democrats are somehow "strange" and "soft" is being undone.

But this is the deal that McCain made with the devil (Bush) back in 2004. He gave his endorsement to Bush so that Bush would give McCain the use of his political machine: the money men, the lobbyists, the smear merchants, and the data-base. And the coordinated call for off-shore drilling.

The coordinated (if illiterate, and backfiring) "Nazi appeasement" gaffe.

Unknown to McCain, a larger, more agile machine was being built at the grass roots, as we saw in 2006, and will see in spades in 2008.

The GOP's "House of Cards" is crumbling at his feet and he probably won't even see it happening until it's too late. Like Nero, he fiddles while his empire is burning all around him.

But then, he's used to that.
