WASHINGTON — Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton plan to meet with some of her top contributors next week in an effort to calm donors who remain frustrated with Obama's presidential campaign.

The meeting is set for June 26 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, several top Clinton fundraisers said Tuesday. The former first lady will introduce Obama to her financial backers.

Jonathan Mantz, Clinton's national finance director, notified donors about the meeting by e-mail Tuesday and urged them to attend and to contribute to Obama, who clinched the Democratic Party's nomination on June 3.

Two people closely involved with Clinton's fundraising said the meeting had taken on added urgency after several of her money "bundlers" complained that they felt their concerns weren't heard during meetings last week with Obama campaign officials in New York and Washington.

Both individuals spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the meeting.

Among other things, the donors want to make sure Obama knows that in order to get their help he needs to help Clinton pay down her campaign debt. As of the end of April, Clinton had more than $20 million in debt, a figure that likely increased by the time she suspended her campaign June 7.

Obama cannot use his campaign money to help Clinton with her debt, which includes at least $11 million of her own money. But he can encourage his donors to contribute to her campaign.

The two fundraisers who discussed the meeting said many donors also are furious that Obama's campaign hired Patti Solis Doyle as chief of staff to Obama's eventual running mate, calling it a slap in the face to Clinton and an implicit acknowledgment that she would not be on the ticket with him.

Story continues below

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said no inference about the selection of a running mate should be made from Solis Doyle's hiring.

"This was a long and hotly contested fight, so obviously there are some strong feelings about how it turned out and what needs to happen moving forward," he said. "But we're confident that the Democrats are united in their desire to defeat (Republican) John McCain."

Clinton and Obama will meet with two different groups of donors at the Mayflower a week from Thursday. One larger group will include donors who raised $250,000 for Clinton's campaign. A more intimate session will be reserved for about 30 fundraisers who collected $1 million or more.

"The challenge is reaching out to donors to ask them for money for a candidate that they've been on the opposite side of for a year and a half," said Alexander Heckler, Clinton's Florida finance chairman. "However, we have to take a deep breath and realize that we need to all work together and have a Democratic president elected."

Another Clinton fundraiser suggested there was no rift, noting that a vigorous primary contest had just ended.

"The Obama campaign has reached out to the Clinton people," said Hassan Nemazee, Clinton's national finance co-chairman. "I think this is a process that is being undertaken and hopefully we will be in a position to assimilate the Clinton fundraising operation and the Obama fundraising operation together in the near future."

"The reality is that we're two weeks from the day that the last primary was held," he added. "It takes a little while for staff to talk to each other, for lay organizations to talk to one another. It's taken a while to get the candidates available."

Heckler said he has been working with Obama's camp and said he and Obama's Florida finance chairman, Kirk Wagar, have been speaking daily to discuss fundraising strategies.

Separately Tuesday, Obama met in Washington with most members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, many of whom had supported Clinton. Obama acknowledged that he still has work to do to win Hispanic votes.

All the caucus members who attended the meeting pledged to support Obama, according to several members who spoke privately afterward.

Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas said he told Obama he had worked his heart out for the former first lady and would work just as hard for Obama's election.

I don't get it. The people who gave Senator Clinton money are saying to Obama "if you don't give money to Senator Clinton we're not giving you any money"? Why not just let her deal with the costs incurred by her vanity run at president and use your own money for you instead of her?

Isnt it funny though! Why do her 'donors' have any cloat!! Arent they partially the reason why she lost?

I've never seen such a group of cry babies as exists in the group of Clinton supporters. Definitely not team players working toward the goal of defeating the Republicans. No wonder Clinton's campaign was in debt and poorly managed, with such a herd of egoists.

Obama has no class. I can't believe that Hillary -- the selfless person that she is -- is still helping him after he hired that loser, Patti.

TheOneironaut, in the past two posts I have noticed clout, and lose misspelled. Lose means to not win. Loose is the opposite of tight. You loosen a belt, you lose an nomination. It is probably the most misspelled word on this particular sight, making me wonder about the educational level of many, many Obama posters. Typos are one thing, but frequently misused words are entirely more telling about ability, education and undertanding levels. So please do your best to improve your word use if you want to be found credible here.

The largest part of the reason why Hillary lost the nomination is because we didn't want a President who was beholden to her corporate ties.
Obama would do well to avoid her financiers, and the subsequent "favors" they will expect.

Obama has enough supporters who will keep giving him all we can that he can say NO NO NO to Hillary's fat cat contributors who will extract promises from him that are bad for America.

If Clinton supporters want Obama supporters to help pay Clinton's campaign debt, they'd be wiser to show their loyality and appreciation to Obama rather than threatening to withold their support if Obama "doesn't" help pay Clinton's debt. It's kinda like a child telling a parent that if they don't help him pay for the car he wrecked, he's going to withhold his love. I sure wouldn't want to help him pay for the mess he created with such an unappreciative and entitled attitude. I might even be tempted to tell him to go fish.

I hope Hillary will "really" support Obama. The Clinton's have a history of saying they support democratic candidates and then giving simply lukewarm support, like for John Kerry and then the person who opposing Joe Lieberman in CT. I am very suspicious of any statements of support. She and Bill may still be planning to run again in 2012 and their best chance for success then will be for John McCain to win in 2008. The Clintons are simply people that I do not trust, they, like most politicians only care about themselves first.

"several of her money "bundlers" complained that they felt their concerns weren't heard during meetings last week with Obama campaign officials"

That's what this is about: delivering her promises to her donors.

Hillary was always owned by Big Business from whom she received fantastic amounts of money. Now she cannot deliver to those sponsors and she wants Obama to listen to them.

I hope Obama is not for sale to her donors.

I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE BEST WAY FOR HILL TO GET ON THE TICKET IS TO CAMPAIGN LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW FOR HIM, THIS WOULD PROVE HOW INVALUABLE SHE IS IF THE POLLS IMPROVED GREATLY. OBAMA WOULD THEN HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION IF THAT WAS THE CASE, HE CAN ENSURE A LANDSLIDE WIN IN NOVEMBER VS. BARELY WINNING.

What would be great would be if they spring a VP announcement that night. Watching the residents of the Kultist Kompound practically eat their own in rabid frenzy of anger and self-hate would make it worthwhile.

Rabid frenzy of anger and self-hate exists with all Clintdems who now call themselves macdems. To vote against your your best interests is what I really call rabid self-hatred.

She will not be VP because she herself obliterated that bridge by crossing the line with her attacks and statements against O, which only helped mac.

It's clear however that she understands the gravity of 4 more years of Bush policies and so should you. The stakes are very high, so I suggest you get over it.

Wow am I the first comment? Anyways, if Hi-lary decides to campaign in earnest for O-bam he will be extremely difficult to beat come Nov. His campaign needs to run continuous ad's of Mc-kanes flip flops.
For example, tax cuts, oil drilling, tor-ture, I r=aq, agents of intolerance, and others. He has actually changed positions more than once on some of these issues. Mc-kane used to stand for something, now he stands for absolutely nothing.

Like a hole in the head.

She had every advantage going in and he had none. She still lost when she should have sailed to victory.

She is dishonest and people do not like her.

She needs him to help her raise money to pay off her debt, therefore, she should help him campaign. However, he is winning without her, and he definitely doesn't need her as VP to create drama and anxiety among people who cannot stand her.

She is divisive and not loyal. She would never be a good vp for him.

As long as she plays it straight and doesn't have him undermined. It wasn't so long ago that almost countless people that post here were saying that she wants Obama to lose, so that McCain will win, so that she can run again in 2012. I was never sure of this theory; my point here is that it's all been forgotten. If so, was it ever viable? I ask this of anyone here who may have put that theory forward.

I may be wrong but my feeling is that Hillary stay away from Obama.

Her kind of politics, and her kind of selling out to her donors, is not what he needs.

How can you manage the economy when you run own campaign into debt????? If he takes money from her campaign contributors then you know there were promises made and how does that differ from lobbyist?

I agree. She needs money to pay of her $20M debt, and if he helps her raise funds to pay of her debts, it's only fitting that she would help him.

This is a fund-raiser for the General Election.

There will be others to help retire her debt---but this one isn't going to do that

"If he takes money from her campaign contributors then you know there were promises made"

It's different, because he doesn't NEED their money to win, so he doesn't NEED to promise them ANYTHING. At this point, selling out to Big Business for a couple grand would COST him money in the long run.

It's more symbolic than anything - it's about the unity of the party.
