Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) is taking a month off from Congress to recuperate after her marathon run for the presidency.

She is not expected to return to the Senate until July 7 or July 8 after the Independence Day recess, according to two Democratic sources.

Clinton's Democratic colleagues in the Senate are taking a sympathetic attitude toward her extended absence, which comes after a grueling 18-month formal bid for the White House and, according to some calculations, a decade or more of planning and positioning since the days when her husband was president.

"People understand this is a transition for her," Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) said.

This is the candidate who was going to be ready to take that 3 am phone and was ready to lead on Day One...after a break to regroup and transition.

Can't take 18 months of campaigning? Glad we have Obama. He seems to have the stamina to complete the primary campaign and forge right ahead in the General with just Father's Day weekend off with his family.

Maybe I missed something. Maybe candidates in the past had to transition and regroup for a couple of months and I didn't get the memo. It just seems kind of fragile. Pick yourself up, brush yourself off, roll up your shirtsleeves, and get back to work. Isn't that what we all have to do?

This qualifies as news?

It's from The Hill, which covers all things politics, so... yes.

And in general, an elected official not doing his or job is news.

You have a point that from that angle it is new, though not exactly rare in elected officials!

A month long BREAK? Excuse me Miss Hillary? As a citizen of Brooklyn NY I'm in your constituency and I resent you taking a month-long vacation for no good reason!! Get back to work, I'm paying your salary!!!

Show a little respect why don't you. Just where do you get off? Too bad what you resent...next time she runs for office real free to cast your vote for someone else. What a jerk you must be!!!!!

I have every right to be indignant and I'll TELL you where I get off....I voted for this woman, TWICE! Is she YOUR junior senator? I don't think so! And for your information I did vote for somebody else...Barack Obama! But that doesn't excuse Hillary for being on the dole. You're the (misinformed) jerk here!

Hillary is a prima donna and a diva. She should do the nation a big favor and retire from the Senate. She clearly does not need the salary.

Great. Then she will take the summer recess. It really peeves me that we have been paying the people who have been campaigning for president salaries for their senate seats all of this time.

I wonder how new yorkers feel about their senator not working for such stretch's at a time?

I live in New York and Sen. Chuck Shumer is on the job. We are not worried. Thank you for asking.

Yes, it's like New Yorkers only have ONE senator...Schumer.

He had better not miss the upcoming telecom immunity filibuster. Our boys Feingold and Dodd are going to need all the help they can get.

She wouldn't have had this problem if she had stepped down when her chances went out the window back in February.

Well ... she is 61/62 years old, and she appears to be carrying around some serious luggage (around the eyes). Yeah, she looks pretty old ... I mean tired. She should take off two months---but not with pay!!!

Note to US-elf...:
NO MORE Professional-FullTime political campaigning. CAMPAIGN SEASON RUNS FROM ___ to ___ = deal with it...

Limit on TIME and $$ to be spent on primaries.
No more professional consultants/fees.

Not ONE DIME of municipal money on security for political-party sponsored events. Pay as you GO - the campaigns foot the WHOLE BILL.

(That, alone would put MILLIONS back into local coffers - )

I am a Obama supporter. The article indicates she can be available for critical votes. July is around the corner. Her give a break, she ran for the DEM nominee which was a touch process and she needs a little R&R to regroup. This would go for anyone.

I believe some of the postings are from republicans to cause chaos!!!
