CNN:

Former GOP presidential contender Mike Huckabee called Barack Obama's candidacy "a landmark achievement" Tuesday, and warned fellow Republicans not to demonize Obama.

"Republicans will make a fundamental if not fatal mistake if they seek to win the election by demonizing Barack Obama," Huckabee told reporters in Tokyo, according to a report by Agence France-Presse.

Gotta love this guy's timing. He only says sensible things when nobody is listening.

It's too late for Huchabee to be saying this now. Why did he not say this when he was in American soil? He can only say this on a foreign soil?

Was he not the one who poked a joke about Obama's assassination during his meeting with the NRA?

To hell with this 'fair weather pastor'

Huckabee can say it. And he can mean it.

But that doesn't mean that the GOP "fringe creatures" won't continue to scurry about with comments about "keeping the White House white" and that sort of stuff.

Nor does it mean that when you get enough liquor into them as night turns into dawn, a significant percentage of Republican base won't enjoy a good guffaw from those sorts of remarks.

From reading the excerpt on the H-Post, I agree with Huckabee.

I have always thought of Mike Huckabee as decent, unlike the other contenders. I will not be surprised that Obama will remember such good gestures.

If the Huckster didn't have policy positions that are completely abhorrent to me, I could actually vote for the guy!

This is the second time Huckabee has shown some support of Obama. I don't agree with him politically or socially, but Huckabee is a decent human being, and obviously honest. He also did an amazing job in his campaign, considering he had no money and nobody knew who he was. You can get fairly far if you are honest, genuine and don't pander. It's why Obama is our nominee and Hillary isn't.

I second that. Well said!

he right if they go after obama on personal issues like clinton did then its going to back fire on them and if the republicans go after michelle obama like they did back in the 90s then it will back fire as well also if republicans go after obama on the issues then they also lose. so its a lose lose situation but republicans should stay away from personal attacks or they will become the party of "those people"

I have always liked squirrel eating huckabee for his personality even though i thoroughly disagreed with his policies and was ashamed of him when he made a poor attempt at a joke at the NRA meeting.

It is unfortunate that the GOP has taken every possible smear and fear attack strategy in their book to paint Obama as a scary black man who is unpatrioitic and terrorist sympathizer. They are yet to understand that while the internet can be used as a vehicle for smear, it can also be used as a vehicle of exposing GOP desperation with a small thing known as the "truth."

Obama is now equated with Carter just so that McCain's similarities with Bush's policies would be forgotten. The word appeasement gets thrown around easily without any understanding. Obama did not say he was going to have dinner and cigar with terrorists. Instead he said that it would be foolish to ask Ahmedinejad to not participate in building nuclear weapon as a precondition for talks about his country's participation in building nuclear weapons.

Unfortunately, the GOP underestimates the intelligence of the electorate this year, similar to what Hillary did. They will find out in November how out of touch they are with people.

"You can't accept an invitation to the prom until the football captain asks you. So I'm not going to go out and buy the outfit just yet," said Huckabee, according to AFP.

Now I want Huckabee to be named VP in the worst way! Just gotta know what he'll look like in that dress!

Don't worry, with a football captain like McCain, it'll never happen.

I think it is too late for that. It would have sounded sincere if he had decried it as it has happened, but he has allowed the damage to go unchecked by his concerns. Now it sounds like an audition for the Captain of the Team and a sound bite of reason for the uninformed.

Didn't he just get hired by fox? If so, how does he reconcile his statement in this article with the goals of his new employer?

I've said something similar about this if the GOP keeps attacking Obama on his race its going to fire up his base even more and the last thing you need if you are a Rethug is a fired up democratic base. They need to lay off the racial attacks if not for the reason fo winning then for PATRIOTIC REASONS. It sends a bad message to be attacking someone running for the highest office on the basis of race. We should be bringing the country together NOT dividing it. They would stick to the issues if they were smart.

"We should be bringing the country together NOT dividing it. They would stick to the issues if they were smart. "

Oh, they're plenty smart. The hard part for people like us to understand is that, in fact, dividing the country *is* their goal.

Well Huckabee helped lend credence to minimizing him with the assassination joke. How selective can he be?

I used to like what Huckabee stood for until his comments before the NRA. But he's right. Vilifying Michelle or Barack will help them win. Just ask Bill and Hillary Clinton.
