WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama said Wednesday she was "touched" that first lady Laura Bush came to her defense after she was harshly criticized by Republicans for her February comment that for the first time in her adult life she was proud of the United States.

Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, later clarified her remarks, saying she had always been proud of her country and was particularly proud to see so many people involved in the political process.

In an interview last week with ABC, Bush said, "I think she probably meant 'I'm more proud,' you know, is what she really meant." She said comments in a campaign are closely watched and can be misconstrued.

Michelle Obama told the women of ABC's "The View" that she sent Bush a note for her remarks.

"It took me a while to write it. It's like, how do I address her?" she said. "I said dear madam first lady."

Obama did not elaborate on the contents of the letter because she said Bush might not have received it yet.

"But I was touched by it," Michelle Obama said. "And that's what I like about Laura Bush. You know, just calm, rational approach to these issues. And you know, I'm taking some cues. I mean, there's a balance. There's a reason why people like her. It's because she doesn't, sort of, you know, fuel the fire."

At a campaign stop in February, Michelle Obama told an audience in Milwaukee: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change."

Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential contender John McCain, later sought to capitalize on the remark, saying "I have, and always will be, proud of my country."

Michelle Obama, a guest host on the popular talk show, talked about the presidential campaign and helped the show's regular hosts interview actor Matthew Broderick.

She walked onto the set arms linked with Barbara Walters, one of the show's co-hosts. She joked with the other cast members Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd, giving them fist bumps as she joined them at the table.

"Wait," she told them after sitting down. "I have to be greeted properly. Fist bump, please."

Earlier this month, a Fox News analyst suggested that her affectionate on-stage knuckle bump with her husband, on the night he locked up the Democratic presidential nomination, might have been a "terrorist's fist jab."

"It is now my signature bump," Michelle Obama told "The View" co-hosts. "But let me tell you, I'm not that hip. I got this from the young staff. That's the new high-five."

Michelle Obama, 44, and her husband, 46, also appear on the cover of "Us Weekly" magazine this week, under the headline, "Michelle Obama: Why Barack Loves Her."

Barack Obama told the celebrity magazine, "When we started out on this campaign, we wanted to make sure that life for our girls would remain as normal as possible, and it's because of Michelle that they are so grounded. Nothing is more important to Michelle than being a good mother, and she works every day to instill in our girls the same values we were raised with."

The couple have two daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7. The issue hits newsstands on Friday.

Cindy scolds her, Laura praises her? Sounds like they're playing good cop/bad cop here.

Perhaps McCain will use it as another difference between he and Bush.

Michelle was great on the view, and I think she should do more shows/events that allow her to be less political and more of a personality. I say that because she's very likable and charismatic just like her husband, and when she takes off the political hat we get to see who she really is. And I'll say this aswell: Laura Bush seems much more gracious that the robotic and fake Cindy McCain, and when Michelle said she was touched by Laura's comments, it only reminded me what a shrew Cindy is.

I think it's great that former and future first ladies exchange stories.
Michelle is as wise as her husband/

Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Obama are some great people. It's nice to see the good side of people like these two. As for Mrs. McCain, she didn't have to attack Mrs. Obama as she did but money can't buy you class.

Laura Bush has alway been a beautiful, dignified lady! Her graciousness toward Michelle Obama shows her wonderful sense of fairness. And, Michelle Obama is simply an intelligent, classy lady who will make a great first lady. Welcome, Michelle!

Laura (unlike George) has always come across as an honest, decent woman of class. I have always been fond of her while EXTREMELY disappointed in Dubya.

p.s. Jenna seems cool too !

Why is the word "really" always clipped from this quote? It has significant impact on the meaning. "for the first time in her adult life she was (really) proud of the United States. This is Faux & Karl Rove talk.

Because it's not what Michele said, it's because she's black and he's black - and not only are they black, their educated blacks - don't you get it - the haters put those racists things out there, the media repeat and repeat it and then the people either agree, defend or keep it going - How long has this Michele comment been looped - did they loop Cindy McCain's drug and theft story - no, because she is white - and they say it's because the people don't know Michele - well heck, there's lots of people that don't know Cindy McCain - who is she -

I remember McCain campaign's immediate reaction, Cindy McCain stepped forware stiffly, kept nodding her head and said "I'm proud of my country, I don't know about you, but I'm proud of my country." She looked silly and puppet like.

Well, how refreshing. I do not watch the View, so I didn't know about this until I read about it. It is tremendously refreshing to see something reported about women acting like women. No snide remarks on either side, no name calling. Just two people acting like grown women. Dignity and respect are not dead any more than chivalry is.

I have always judged great men by their wives. You see an accomplished neurosugeon with a 19 year old Hawaian Tropics model, you know he doesn't like to be challenged. But Michelle Obama shows me that our next president (fingers crossed) is a man who values a true partner in his life, someone intelligent and accomplished in her own right. I think Laura Bush and her mother-in-law Barbara are delightful women, but I think it's awesome that M.O. can be the kind of first lady that Hillary Clinton was, an example of womanhood in full.

In all fairness, Barbara Bush is known as a real ball-buster (I mean that in a gender-neutral way) and the undisputed matriarch of the clan. She was the one Bush insiders were always terrified of incurring the wrath of, not relatively easy-going Bush Sr. Don't let the grey hair and pearls fool ya... she'd take a baseball bat to your knees if that's what it took for her to get what she wants for her family!

As for Laura, I've always kind of wondered what the hell she was doing with George. I mean, she doesn't strike me as anything incredible, but she clearly has more brains, class, and dignity than her husband ever had. He may be the president of the United States, but in my opinion, she coulda done better!

Totally agree with you on the Barack-Michelle relationship. How refreshing to see a power couple that truly act as *partners* rather than rivals in a twisted kind of business relationship....

Political marriages may be the lingering vestige in our "democracy" of arranged alliance. As I sort through all the first ladies of my lifetime, few are clearly people who "should" be with their husbands. Specifically Eleanor Roosevelt, Mamie Doud Eisenhower, Lady BIrd Johnson, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, Barbara Bush. The rest of them -- Jackie Kennedy, Pat Nixon, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Cindy McCain -- are a mystery unless you accept the idea that a marriage is a political alliance not to be discarded lightly.

I'm not suggesting, by the way, that one list is "good" and other bad. That's a bit of the point, really. Barbara Bush is a creature of ferocious privilege -- CIndy McCain with power, if you like -- but her partnership with Grampa George doesn't seem blindered the way Jackie and Hillary seem to be. The second group is, essentially, women who could have done better than what they settled for. Most of them seem to have chosen loveless relationships, and I suppose why they did is incidental.

So lets see how could Faux News twist THIS one...

"Michelle Obama claims she was 'touched' by First Lady Laura Bush. The First Lady has issued a statement denying any physical contact between herself and Michelle Obama. Is Laura Bush touching Michelle Obama or is this just another attempt to on the part of the Obamas to smear the current administration?"

Any other ideas? The more ridiculous the better. There's rumor the grand prize is a shot at copy editor at any of News Corp's holdings.

I'll second that..Laura Bush made a classy, gracious, and intelligent comment in defense of Michelle Obama, she rejected opportunism and embraced empathy... very good for her for setting a civil tone!!

Laura Bush showed class well beyond anything Ms. McCain could have managed. Cookies anyone?

Frankly, Ms. McCain scares me and I don't trust her for a second. But then...I don't trust her husband either. He's not earned it.

I thought that was really nice of Laura Bush, too. Michelle was pretty unpolished back when she made those remarks--was it really only four months ago?--and Mrs. Bush is spot-on in her caution of words. Both Obamas learned that the hard way. It was a good tip from the one first lady to an aspiring (and hopefully upcoming!) one. Laura Bush is a far better First Lady than her husband is President, though that might well be damning with faint praise.

Laura Bush chose to be a supportive mother, wife and to promote education. Though I am not happy with President Bush's performance and am supporting Obama, I think Mrs. Bush has conducted herself with dignity and grace as First Lady.

This was a classy and sensible comment by the First Lady. Despite McCain's wife comments, there are not too many Americans who are totally proud every minute of their lives, of EVERYTHING that citizens of the US have done, certainly not anyone who bothers to read about the entire history of the country.

Pardon my beer, but McCain's wife comments seem disingenuous.

Did you honestly think that just because people cannot stand W or his horrendous policies that they would blindly attack Laura Bush, who is the last one with any sense of dignity in there?

You are thinking in repub attack mode.

A bit obnoxious this - two slurs (one implicit) in one comment. Judging by the grammar, spelling and abundance of monosyllabic words prevalent here, the obvious slur's quite unfounded. Refer more on specks and beams before casting these aspersions on people you don't even know.
