WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama said Wednesday she was "touched" that first lady Laura Bush came to her defense after she was harshly criticized by Republicans for her February comment that for the first time in her adult life she was proud of the United States.

Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, later clarified her remarks, saying she had always been proud of her country and was particularly proud to see so many people involved in the political process.

In an interview last week with ABC, Bush said, "I think she probably meant 'I'm more proud,' you know, is what she really meant." She said comments in a campaign are closely watched and can be misconstrued.

Michelle Obama told the women of ABC's "The View" that she sent Bush a note for her remarks.

"It took me a while to write it. It's like, how do I address her?" she said. "I said dear madam first lady."

Obama did not elaborate on the contents of the letter because she said Bush might not have received it yet.

"But I was touched by it," Michelle Obama said. "And that's what I like about Laura Bush. You know, just calm, rational approach to these issues. And you know, I'm taking some cues. I mean, there's a balance. There's a reason why people like her. It's because she doesn't, sort of, you know, fuel the fire."

At a campaign stop in February, Michelle Obama told an audience in Milwaukee: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country. Not just because Barack is doing well, but I think people are hungry for change."

Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential contender John McCain, later sought to capitalize on the remark, saying "I have, and always will be, proud of my country."

Michelle Obama, a guest host on the popular talk show, talked about the presidential campaign and helped the show's regular hosts interview actor Matthew Broderick.

She walked onto the set arms linked with Barbara Walters, one of the show's co-hosts. She joked with the other cast members Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd, giving them fist bumps as she joined them at the table.

"Wait," she told them after sitting down. "I have to be greeted properly. Fist bump, please."

Earlier this month, a Fox News analyst suggested that her affectionate on-stage knuckle bump with her husband, on the night he locked up the Democratic presidential nomination, might have been a "terrorist's fist jab."

"It is now my signature bump," Michelle Obama told "The View" co-hosts. "But let me tell you, I'm not that hip. I got this from the young staff. That's the new high-five."

Michelle Obama, 44, and her husband, 46, also appear on the cover of "Us Weekly" magazine this week, under the headline, "Michelle Obama: Why Barack Loves Her."

Barack Obama told the celebrity magazine, "When we started out on this campaign, we wanted to make sure that life for our girls would remain as normal as possible, and it's because of Michelle that they are so grounded. Nothing is more important to Michelle than being a good mother, and she works every day to instill in our girls the same values we were raised with."

The couple have two daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7. The issue hits newsstands on Friday.

The Republicans, and the Cindy McSame's out there who took MO's comment's and attacked her personally for it for political gain should be ashamed. I know they won't because that's who they are. They're the old politics that divides and creates hate while accomplishing nothing respectable. Unless you're one of them -it gives them more reason to attack to keep the voters minds off of their terrible policie issues.
The NY times were wrong to say MO needs some sort of make over. The only thing she needs is to introduce herself to the country. I wouldn't say the same about that recipe fabricator out there.

Cindy McCain is a disgrace. When she's not stealing prescription meds (and getting away with it) she's stealing, of all things, cookie recipes. To say nothing of the fact that she will lie over even the smallest things in life, life a friggin' cookie recipe, who in their right mind believes she bakes cookies? Everything about her is fake.

It's just like grace.

You can't have "a little grace." You either have grace, or you...don't.

And you can't acquire grace.

Grace isn't something you can pick up at the market.

The comments from the First Lady are fantastic and admirable, and so is MO's response. I am touched by both of them! Wow, what a great moment of people in the political spotlight putting aside differences and acting like rational, caring adults.

Yeah! I'm in a good mood now.

MO (along with her husband) in the White House would constitute the single best message we could send to the rest of the world of our intent to make amends for the fiasco that has been Bush.

True to form - Huffpo did not add MO's positive comments of HC (all names changed to acronyms for speedy posting):

In a guest appearance on ABC’s The View today MO sided with Sen. HC’s view that sexism played a role in the presidential primary campaign:

Yes, there’s always a level of sexism. People are not used to strong women. MO credited HC for her race and for breaking down barriers for women:

And I think that HC, as she said, has made 18 million cracks on the ceiling and we need to keep pushing it and pushing it.

She further credited HC for paving the way to make it easier for her young daughters.

She’s taken [the hits] so that when my girls come along they won’t have to fight it as badly.

MO side-stepped a question on whether or not HC would make a good vice-president for her husband:

The one thing the nominee earns is the right to pick the vice president that best reflects the needs of the country, and I’m just glad I have nothing to do with it. - MO

That was a significant omission by Huffpost and they ought to be called on it!!!!!

Mrs. Obama is such a wonderful role model to all women. We should be teaching our daughters to grow up to be like her. She's going to bring a lot of class back to the White House. I think she should be compared to the grace and class of Jackie Kennedy, but there is so much more to her than even that.

Is your implication that Laura Bush, Hillary, Clinton, Barbara Bush, and Nancy Reagan had less class than Mrs. Obama?

Also, it may be a little early to start comparing her to Jackie Kennedy - (same could be said for herhusband and JFK). Let her make some more speeches on a national level (without stepping in it) and see what she can accomplish if she becomes first lady.

Couldn't let her have a moment of glory, could you???

I think dzymzlzy was not insulting the first ladies you mentioned; and you omitted Rosalynn Carter, Betty Ford, Patricia Nixon, and "Lady Bird" Johnson. I think this comment was more a critcism of George Bush's two terms and the effect that a first lady like Mrs. Obama could have in healing this nation.

1099 - What does complementing Ms. Obama have to do with passing judgment of previous first lady's. I swear some some people will find anything to argue about.

Michelle"s appearance on the show with "The View" ladies demonstrated that she is very personable, warm, charming and easy to be around. She will be a terrific First Lady and a wonderful complement to President Obama in helping to improve the world's opinion of our country (as well as our own opinion of our country's leaders) -- just one of the multitude of tasks facing the next administration.

Go Obama '08

According to the tape Michelle Obama said "She is really proud of the United States"..she is already proud and she is only trying to emphasize that she is more proud and thanks to Laura Bush for her comments. Laura Bush shows her wonderful side with her comments and Michelle Obama is an American Dream from the south side of Chicago to Princeton and Harvard what are the odds???? Go Obama 08!!!!

Michelle Obama appears to be a really nice down to earth person. She has a quick warm smile and sense of humor. I loved watching how gracefully she handled herself. She would do us all proud as First Lady! No wonder Barack fell in love with her! It will be wonderfull to have a young family with kids in the White House!
