Obama Accuser Larry Sinclair Holds Stupefying Press Conference

UPDATE: Reason's David Weigel reports, and Politico's Ben Smith confirms, that Sinclair was arrested by Washington, D.C. police after the press conference.

It is not often that a political reporter can claim to have witnessed the single most stupefying event on any single day, what with the diversity of inanity on display from coast to coast in an election year. But today, I feel confident laying claim to that dubious distinction, for I attended Larry Sinclair's Wednesday press conference at the National Press Club.

The event began less than auspiciously for Mr. Sinclair -- who has gained Internet notoriety by spreading wild accusations regarding gay sex, drugs and possible murder committed by Barack Obama -- as National Press Club staff took pains to remove the association's logo from behind the podium where Sinclair was set to speak. (Politico's Ben Smith today detailed Sinclair's "27-year criminal record, with a specialty in crimes involving deceit.")

Of course, the club had made clear for some time that it should not be viewed as endorsing Mr. Sinclair's claims simply for having agreed to host his mind-numbingly preposterous litany -- heavens, no! All that could be said for the institution was that it was happy to rent out its space to anyone who might be willing to pay in order to switch on the microphone.

And pay Sinclair did -- for the venue and its microphone, as well as for a kilted lawyer (with a suspended license) named Montgomery Blair Sibley, who informed those assembled that his preferences in dress were arrived at as a way to secure comfort for his unusually large sexual organs. "I don't know why men wear pants," he said with a poker face. "It's a function of male genitalia. If you're size normal or smaller, you're probably comfortable with [pants]. ... Those at the other end of the spectrum find them quite confining."

"I asked him to wear a suit and tie," Mr. Sinclair said ruefully. Then, he admitted to suffering from a brain tumor.

Only slightly less mystifying were the several dozen assembled journalists who seemed to grant Mr. Sinclair some modicum of respect with their questions. They cross-examined his statement regarding his supposed meetings with the Illinois Democrat with a vigor and small-bore attention to detail that prosecutors reserve strictly for witnesses who are sane. Imagine if you were to encounter someone who had lit himself on fire, and then proceeded to ask which brand of gasoline he favored.

And so the inquiries came, most of which Mr. Sinclair easily batted back with the exhortation to investigate his claims more vigorously. As for the evidence he provided, it amounted to a few phone numbers -- registered under different names and in different states -- that Mr. Sinclair claimed he used to call, variously, a limousine driver, the deceased choir director of Trinity United Church of Christ, and others. Clearly, it is now the duty of the mobile phone companies to open up these records to court scrutiny. (Forgive me for not reprinting any of the "evidence" in full here. Should you care to see it, Sinclair promised a version would be made public on his website, one free of the several errors which vexed him during his public statement today.)

"I expect you to ask me questions," Sinclair told the reporters. "I expect you to do your job, and actually find facts as opposed to looking at DailyKos or FireDogLake or Huffington Post or all of these pro-Obama sites."

When a questioner asked Mr. Sinclair whether he would permit review of his mental health records "for more than 30 minutes" -- in a lame attempt to riff on the restrictions imposed by John McCain's campaign -- Sinclair mumbled for a few moments, unaware of the reference.

When he was clued in, Mr. Sinclair shrugged and said: "You can see where my head is today."

To borrow a phrase: yes, we can.

I don't know if Larry Sinclair and Obama had this tryst that Sinclair is alleging. Only the two of them know the truth. However, I will say that Sinclair has not given any substantial evidence that this actually took place.

Also, I will say it is clear that folks hate Obama so much or afriad of him being president that they will actually endorse and even fund this charade. As I mentioned before, don't know if any of this is true. But, I do know that if some crazy, low life, black guy with a criminal record filled with deceit made similar allegations about McCain or even Clinton, the media or some of you would not even think about giving this person any legitimacy. You would have thrown the low life black guy out on his behind. But, you folks and the media are giving this con artist who doesn't have a job and living off the donations of people who hate Obama, a sense of legitmacy with his crazy story. Why! Because you want to demonize Obama and you are scared of a black president. Some of what Sinclair says doesn't even add up.

Some of what he says doesn't add up? Wow, talk about understatement. This guy is nuts. Nothing about his story makes any sense at all and his history is that of an incorrigible liar. It is not like the media is giving this guy any legitimacy, but he does have supporters who finance his efforts.

Not even Sean Hannity will have this guy on his show. To put that into perspective, remember that during the Schiavo right wing loony fest, Hannity gave a platform to some clearly looney ex-nurse who claimed that Terri Schiavo had sat up in bed and spoke on several occasions. When asked in a deposition why she had not written anything about this on the patient's chart, she claimed she had but that "someone must have erased it later." But even Sean thinks that this guy Sinclair has no credibility. That has to tell you something.

The strategy of Sinclair's vicious followers is clearly to rehabilitate the guy's image to the point that they can force this story into the main stream media. The appearance at the national press club is obviously a part of this ambitious effort. It is important therefore to hammer this guy at every opportunity. You can't just laugh at him and assume that the MSM will never take him seriously because underestimating the gullibility and corruption of the media could be a fatal mistake.

His was a sad and loathsome cry for help. It sounds like the Denver authorities are going to help him out of his sitiation [sic]. If you are going to make accusations of this nature, cut the stage show and roll tape for verification, otherwise go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not show up at the press club spewing your lecherous filth all over the airwaves for zealots and dimwits alike. Actually, the guy who started the Paula Jones rumor, David Brock, later wrote a book called Blinded by the Right confessing his part in that scam. He now has renounced all his old Republican character assassination tactics he employed on behalf of the GOP and founded MediaMatte­rs.Org to combat the same lies, set ups and smears the GOP relies on to win elections that rob this country blind.

District court -- he was represented by Silbey, whose license is now suspended because Silbey owes huge amounts of unpaid child support to his ex wife in Florida, so I don't know who is going to do Sinclair's lawsuit now.

The NATIONAL PRESS CLUB should be ashamed of themselves!!! Larry obviously needs to be in a mental hospital and is in need of medication. I bet half of my paycheck that it was the GOP that paid for the press conference and mic just like it was a Hillary supporter that put together the event for Rev Wright at the National Press club. I pray every day that Obama stays strong againts all of the disgusting smears againts him and his wife. I do not think I could be this brave and I know he is at his wits end with hearting smears againts his wife. My fiance nearly broke down a door when another man told me to shut up and I know Obama is trying to be strong but people this is getting too much. Has no one else noticed that he accused Obama of buying cocaine, but then said that Obama smoked crack??? I found that very odd, since anyone who knows the difference between the two knows that crack has to be cooked. And unless they stopped to get baking soda, I don't know how it was even possible for Obama to magically turn cocaine into crack by simply putting it in a pipe and smoking it, as Sinclair suggests. Thankfully he is now arrested and this nonsense can stop. And congrats to the Obama camp for (as of yet) not even wasting their time to put this on the fightthesmears.com website.

And it was also not lost on me that Sinclair (white guy) did cocaine, but Obama (black guy) did crack.
