Burger King

CBS News:

It may be the most exotic, the most expensive and the most controversial burger ever flipped in a fast-food joint.

"This is not just ordinary beef, this is special?" CBS News correspondent Mark Phillips asked.

Burger King's Chef Mark Dowding said: "Absolutely; this is Wagyu."

Premium, prohibitively priced, Japanese-style Wagyu, flame-grilled, garnished with Italian truffles, Spanish cured ham, aged balsamic vinegar, Champagne onions and popped onto a saffron- and truffle-dusted bun.

Isn't it all a little elaborate for a hamburger?

"Absolutely not," Dowding said. "Absolutely not."

Total cost of ingredients, the chain says, about $80 a throw.

By the time it gets to the counter, it sells for just shy of $200. For a burger!

So is it worth it?

"Orgasmic," one customer says.

Which is a lot to ask of a burger.

To some this is a burger - a high-end burger. It would have to be at $200 a pop. To others, though, it isn't a burger. It's grotesque on a bun.

"Outrageous," said Dave Tucker, with the anti-poverty group "War on Want."

Maybe if I had a coupon for $199 off the price. I might go ahead and try it.

Truffles? Balsamic vinegar? No thanks. I'd rather have cheddar cheese and ketchup.

Whattyah wanna bet the slightly over minimum wage "grill specialist" snorts a "special sauce" on each and every fat patty?

$200? Even for charity, this baby would only sell in Dubai.

Burger King lost me when they fired the actor who played ...well, the Burger King. Had his own sidekick, too. Anyone else remember them? They gave Ronald and the McDonaldland characters a good run for their money back in the early 80's.

Speaking of money, this sounds very tasty and everything, but didn't they use to advertise as "having it your way?" I'd like mine for three bucks, please.

200 dollars for the burger is more than they will pay the person serving it to you. Hold the Tomatoes

OTOH, for $200 a person I know a couple of places where I can get real food and not just poorly burnt protein.

Well hey, those 1%er's who are getting the lions share of our nation's growth have to spend their money on something. It's the service economy. They make millions so they can pay hundreds of us minimum wage to diaper their babies, mow their lawns, and flip their $200 burgers. Just life in Republicanamerica.
