Remember that "Intelligencer" item about Antonin Scalia bumming a cigarette from Sarah Jessica Parker? Most people read that and thought, "A conservative Supreme Court justice watches Sex and the City?" But we, of course, thought to ourselves, "Sarah Jessica Parker still smokes? She, the perfect mother who hates her nannies to be mentioned in news articles? The Greenwich Village icon who starred in a show about sex but refused to take her bra off during the act? No way!" But apparently it's so -- and the habit rubs off on her husband, Matthew Broderick, and even (gasp!) her 5-year-old son, James Wilkie. At the screening of Broderick's new vice-filled film, Finding Amanda, where he plays a gamble-holic having an off-the-wagon weekend in Vegas, Ferris Bueller told us all about it. "I used to smoke cigarettes, and I still do, lately. I gave that up a long time ago, but every now and then I will fall off for a week." And guess who's fault that might be? Broderick says SJP is "worse than me on that." And James Wilkie is "already curious. He'll see a cigarette butt and say, 'What is that? Why do people smoke?' I can just see the little budding gene of a smoker in there."

I suggest the author of this article read the newspapers from time to time. It's been a couple of years now since the news came out that both coffee-drinking and cigarette-smoking (in spite of their bad effects) are beneficial for those suffering from PARKINSON'S. I think one should allow any human being to make a decision about smoking for himself in such a case.

Gosh, folks, ya know who else is probably still smoking? BARACK OBAMA. Yes, children, he said he quit when he started his run for president but any smoker would realize it's highly unlikely that he's been able to make that stick in the middle of a stress-laden political campaign. He has kids, too, and I bet he's smoked somewhere within a mile of them.

Okay, I will sit back and wait for the excusers and the apologists to dash in and explain how his smoking isn't the same thing as any other person's smoking. Personally, I'd be much more tempted to vote for him if he stood up proudly and said he intended to smoke and anyone who doesn't like it can STFU.

I had no idea this was such an important story. It must be, it's been on the entertainment page for quite a few days.

It's strictly Broderick and SJP's business if they want to smoke.

Not if they're exposing their child to poisoned air.Surely you've heard about the research on children developing allergies and asthma (at the very least) from living in homes with a smoking parent or parents.

As bad as everyone knows cigarettes are, I am always surprised to see two very intelligent people smoking. Hope it works out for them.

Sadly, it won't. They are drug addicts, just like my parents were. Ill health, then an early, ugly death from cancer awaits them, as it did for my parents.

They should maybe watch a few ads.

This is not news. Leave the smokers alone, because you will be next.

What I meant was that when you start removing the rights of people because they are doing things you don't like, soon those removed rights will apply to you because you are doing something I don't like, and so it goes. This anti-smoking sentiment is anti-American. BYW, I do not smoke.

No risky sports or you loose your insurance, regulations on food because of the country's weight program... is it hard to understand? Opening the door to turning smokers into SATAN has opened the door for all kinds of intrusions into personal life.

American Spirit has gotten crappy, and you can't get some of the better brands (Sobronie) from Europe because of the Tobacco wars, (they are afraid of being sued so the stopped selling in the US) But a German brand, Shepards Hotel, is pretty good. All of the US brands have been so altered and adulterated that they are really bad for our health, not that any smoke is good for you but US brands are really bad. The American brands have been engineered to be highly addictive. I can have a cigarette and not need another for six months. I never really got that addiction thing. Maybe because I stuck with mostly Europeon brands. But I haven't had a smoke for a year now, don't miss it.

In case you weren't aware, cigarrettes, all cigarrettes, are radioactive. Every time you smoke a pack you recieve the equivalent amount of radiation of one chest x-ray. The reason is because tailings from uranium mining are used as fertalizer. Very high in phosphate which is necessary for tobacco to grow and of course very cheap. Add on top of that the dozens of other chemicals they add for curing and burning and you have one deadly and addicitive habit. The New England of Medicine published a study about the radioactivity over 25 years ago.

I lived with a roomate that smoked 4 packs a day for 2 years. One day I decided to take down the curtains in the living room and wash them. On taking them out of the washer I found a pile of rags in the washer, it seems that nicotine eats through fabric (in this case heavy cotton). When I moved out ,of course I was able to quit easier- but I never was able to get that stench out of my leather coats.

Did you take down the pictures from the walls and see the original color of the paint? That was shocking to me, once upon a time.

I saw SJP walking down the streets of New York City a few years ago smoking a cigarette. This would have meant absolutely nothing to me, except that she was pregnant at the time. That was just plain stupid of her. Who cares that she smokes now, except for the fact her 5 year old son is curious about it. Now at least we know how she stays so skinny.
