WASHINGTON — Wherever the nation should be headed, this isn't it.

The number of Americans who believe the country is moving in the wrong direction has risen sharply, to nearly eight in ten, amid soaring food and gas prices, falling home values and unending war. Just 17 percent say the country is going in the right direction, according to an AP-Ipsos poll.

The right-direction number is the lowest ever recorded by the survey, which began in 2003. When other surveys are taken into account, the general level of pessimism is the worst in almost 30 years.

And it's getting worse. The 17 percent positive reading was down from 24 percent just since April.

Those who said the country was on the wrong track totaled 76 percent of the people contacted in the survey, which was taken from June 12-16. That's up from 71 percent in April and 66 percent near the end of 2007.

Six in ten of those who chose wrong track blamed the struggling economy, with gasoline prices hovering above $4 a primary reason. "Poor leadership" accounted for 23 percent, while 20 percent said the war in Iraq.

Robert Ovitt, 57, of Derby, Vt., who describes himself as a political independent, was among those who selected "wrong track."

"It scares me, the way things are going now," said Ovitt, who is facing retirement in the next five years from his job as a correctional officer.

Story continues below

"Ten years ago, we had a Democratic president, Clinton," and the worst that happened was his affairs, Ovitt said. Back then, gas prices, interest rates, unemployment and the federal budget deficit were low, he said. "Now that we have a Republican, everything is sky high. ... I mean I don't know how we're going to survive."

Shirley J. Bailey, 70, of Las Vegas, is already retired. The former Los Angeles dentist, who worked as a precinct captain for Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, said, "People are struggling to live and educate their children." Married with four children and 11 grandchildren, Bailey said, "Just look around us. In my entire lifetime, I never paid $4.23 for a gallon of gas. The foreclosures are among the highest here in Las Vegas."

President Bush's approval rating was 29 percent in the poll, near his all-time low of 28 percent in April, while 67 percent said they disapproved of the way he was handling his job.

Congress, under Democratic control since January 2007, drew even lower approval ratings: 23 percent approved, 72 percent disapproved, roughly the same levels as in the April survey.

Asked about their party affiliation, 37 percent identified themselves as Democrats, 23 percent said they were Republicans and 23 percent said independents. That breakdown underscores the importance of independents in the presidential contest as both Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama court their support.

Software consultant April Dolan, 40, of Scottsdale, Ariz., is a Republican who believes the country is heading in the right direction. "I'm optimistic in general, and I do believe that the economic situation will probably get better in the next 12 to 18 months. I believe it's going to turn around, it's just going to take some time," she said. "Not that everything I think is great. I mean, the oil prices are a nightmare."

She said she has two sons, one already in college and the other due to enter next year. She said she supports Bush and "I don't blame him for the state of the economy."

Many others appear to, however.

Asked about Bush's handling of the economy, 72 percent said they disapproved, 48 percent strongly so; 24 percent said they approved, 7 percent strongly.

The survey reinforces the notion that consumers are particularly gloomy _ possibly more than economic statistics justify. Despite record energy costs, slumping stock prices and the housing and credit crunch, reports show the economy to be still growing, if slowly. Inflation and interest rates remain at relatively tame levels. And the unemployment rate is lower than it was during the past two recessions, in 1990 and 2001.

Still, "For the average American, everything's going wrong. I think there's a lot of reasons for households to be pessimistic. I think things have gotten tougher for most," said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Economy.com.

The survey results also parallel the drop in a consumer confidence index to the lowest level since June 1980, when Jimmy Carter was in the White House and consumers were being battered by a recession and soaring gasoline prices.

Among the findings of the AP-Ipsos survey:

_Men were more likely than women to think that the U.S. is headed in the right direction _ 20 percent to 14 percent.

_Just one in 10 Americans with household incomes below $25,000 feel the country is headed the right way compared with 21 percent of those with household incomes of $50,000 to $75,000.

_One-quarter of Republicans (including those who said they were leaning Republican) believe the country is headed in the right direction, compared with 11 percent of Democrats (including those leaning Democratic).

_People with lower incomes were more likely to frame the economic situation as their own "cost of living," while wealthier people listed the economy more abstractly _ a sign that those hurting the most personalize the issue a bit more.

People in the AP-Ipsos survey were asked: "Generally speaking, would you say things in this country are heading in the right direction, or are they off on the wrong track?" The survey entailed interviews with 1,000 adults, 785 of them registered voters. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points for all respondents, 3.5 percent for registered voters.

the headline should say 98% of Americans think the US is on the wrong track.
Because the wealthiest 1% love what it happening, and then there is the 1% who idolize and want to be like the wealthiest 1% , so they will agree with whatever they say.

We can't afford the gas to get to work . . . gas is killing us in California!

Today we find out that there is oil under our California oceans . . .

Then, Governor Swartzennegar says we are NOT going to go after the oil . . . .

Then he says . . . "because what we really need to do is buy new cars . . ."

I campaigned for this guy . . . is he OUT OF HIS MIND?!?!

No, I heard the same speech today. California has oil drilling rigs sitting out in the ocean just ready to drill for oil, but were shut down by the Environmentalists back in the 90s.

What Gov. Swartzennegar is saying is that he wants Californians to buy the new cars . . . the Prius, and such.

California is in the toilet with excessive unemployment, the housing industry is driving people to suicide and more companies are laying off every week, not to mention excessive gas prices.

I have to agree with her . . . is he out of his mind? ? ? Give his people a break for Gods sake and start drilling for that damn oil . . . or is impeachment the way to go? ? ?

There's not a problem with oil supply. The problem is with Wall Street speculators driving up the price of oil. I'm not sure finding more oil will help much.

Consider that the only OBJECTIVE truths are algebraic or geometric equations. A Tetrahedron is an objective truth, while J esus is not, because we cannot prove J esus.

Now also consider the latest discovery that the so-called missing or Dark Matter may have been discovered by a European space-based telescope more powerful than Hubble. This dark matter is arranged in a web-like structure or, perhaps, framework of the universe.

It is too hot to see in visible light and too cold to see in ultra-violet (if I remember correctly). This web-like structure may well be geometric, reflecting our understanding of Objective Truths. The very chassis of the universe may follow our understanding of Geometry and Algebra. God is a number.

The problem is people in this 20% are very much integrated with the military-industrial complex and the oil cartels. They also believe killing the innocents is OK but they would raise hell if you abort your unborn baby.

It's time to Nationalize the Oil industry in this country.
The oil companies do not own the oil under US soil. They have leases to drill the oil, process the oil, but they do not own the oil, the people do., It's a Natural Resource. A National Resource. The oil companies have by law been allowed to set the value/price of our Natural Resource and then sell it back to us.
Much of the Oil produced around the world is Nationally Owned. They allow the price to go up so they can allow the US to finance their Government and their National Prosperity, Our "Private" (Publicly Traded Corporations) oil barrons allow/push the price up for outrageous profits. The price of oil in the groud did not cost more. The peole of the US funded everyone elses prosperity. You and I did not get to participate, nor did we get a choice. Even the Chinese subsidized its citizens fuel, more so until recently and they paid the spot market for oil with all that US funny money we gave them for all their junk.

But a lease and drill some oil ... Thought so. Selling shoes doesn't make you an engineer, a businessman, or an entrepreneur. But, you can steal the results of their of their work through your tax system.

A Windfall Profits Tax might be a temporary bandaid, but the underlying issue is the oil leases in this country were negotiated by Corporations whose primary interests were their own and either the Federal government (we the people were represented by politicians and brokers) or Jed Clampet.
The US negotiated on the peoples behalf. for the benefit of the people. It appears those contracts no longer serve the people's interest. We renegotiate contracts all the time. in fact the government made a typo on a document that would represent millions of dollars of the pitiful royalties we receive now, Big Oil agreed to correct the typo for a 7 year extension to some oil leases in their favor.
It is in the National Interest, of the most serious nature that the US is not held hostage by unfair contacts made by people several generations ago by people whom I do not know their motives or their abiliity to understand the National Interest.
I do not give them the benefit of the doubt as I can only relate to them to their contemporary counterparts and I am of the belief that our that our government has enough corrupt participants to not fully represent the people.

So then you dont own the water on your land, or if you have a gold mine, or the timber, how about the fish in a stream on your property?

If you buy or lease something its yours depending on the terms agreed to.

in some states, you have to be very careful when you purchase property. some places, the state still reserves the "mineral" rights, in other words, rights to everything under the ground you have purchased the right to sit on top of.

it gets to be a sticky wicket when there is a disagreement in interest between those with "surface" rights, and those with "mineral" rights.

right now, there are many court battles going on in the powder river basin area of wyoming about this very thing. family farms, many of them owned for generations, have been destroyed as their helpless owners watch cheney's energy pals go in and destroy their lands because of a huge natural gas strike there. in wyoming, mineral rights trump surface rights.

it's not pretty, but the laws go way back, to when no one thought of much of anything besides mining for gold or silver, and didn't even know about oil.

Under the US system, you have the right of enjoyment of all that which you "own" until such time the government says otherwise. One of its forms is called Eminent Domain.
I generally witness this government's going this route on a more regional or local level, such as when a Major League Baseball team wants new stadium and the local residents get relocated, and their property seized.

Private Companies built the Levies with federal and state contract dollars. Why the government didnt contract for adequate design and construction, I do not know. Though I havent heard many governemnt contractors turn away the money whether they possessed the knoweledge to do so or not.
Dont misunderstand, I do not want career beauracrats to administer our resources, they have played to great a role in the mess we have now.

Chavez nationalized Venezuela's oil after analyzing the previous oil leases exploited by the Big Oil obscenely undervalued. The deals were struck by oil slick lawyers and dollars spread to those willing to sell out their people.
Our Laws are on the books, paid for, most likely written or at least lobbied for, by a well connected and wealthy group of oilmen wanted them to be our laws. The US Energy Policy stems from a much different era, and can not be trusted to the private sector to manage such a necessary resource.
It's time to renegotiate such an unfair, unAmerican, contract/lease we negotiated for ourselves.

CONSUMPTION BOYCOTT NOW

We can stop the Occupation of Iraq, by reducing your personal spending and letting it be known why.

Eliminate your unnecessary spending for-- Movies, $4.00 coffees, newspapers, magazines, non-essential items, vacations, new cars, electronics, hotels, entertainment, restaurants, reduce driving, etc. Create a goal of cutting $100/week from your budget and telling people why.

If you must spend, avoid corporate stores. If you are able to buy something from a small vendor, do it. If you are able to do without, don’t buy it. Find hobbies other than consuming.

If everyone reduced their spending in all areas, until our troops were brought HOME (not re-deployed within the Middle East) the economic impact would put enormous pressure onto the banking-mortgage-insurance system to stop the war.

Your benefit
Take the money which you will save and use it to pay off credit cards, mortgages, existing car loans, college loans or to build a nest egg. If 10% of the population (30,000,000) could stop spending $100.00 a week and put it towards existing debt without acquiring more, it would take $3,000,000,000.00 A WEEK off of the banker’s books.

Be patriotic and QUIT CONSUMING in order to bring our troops HOME from this illegal occupation NOW. If 10% of us do it, we can make a change in this world. CONSERVE.

What other ideas do you have for conservation and reducing spending?
How can you let people know what you are doing and why?

I know what you are saying, tongue in cheek (or other areas), but i spent over a decade as a merchant mariner, and a decade as a reservist, and we have obviously made mistakes as a country, but you might want to examine our record. Defeating Hitler, defeating a huge Soviet state (ask the Poles, Hungarians, or Cezchs), keeping the peace in the worlds shipping lanes, fighting AIDS in Africa, and countless other stuff. QI think we do a lot more good than harm. Even when we screww up, like Iraq, the Kurds get a bonus.
