Back in January, the Washington Post's Howard Kurtz examined the relationship between the Obama campaign and the political press and found them to be something of "an odd duck," describing the campaign as unusually "aloof" and protective. "All traveling campaigns have a bubble-like quality," Kurtz noted, "but Obama seems unusually insulated." Kurtz went on to note an incident that struck him as a bit of a peculiarity:

One moment of absurdity came Tuesday, when reporters on the press bus were asked to dial into a conference call in which Obama announced a congressman's endorsement -- even though the candidate was nearby and just as easily could have delivered the news in person to the bus captives. Obama answered a few questions, but reporters are generally placed on mute after they speak so there can be no follow-up.

Since then, it seems that from the press' perspective, what the campaign has done to address this aloofness can be summed up in two words: not much. In fact, the matter has recently bloomed from an intriguing curiosity to a full-blown complaint. Ben Smith has obtained a copy of a letter sent by the "Washington bureau chiefs of six leading news organizations to the Obama campaign." Sent in the wake of the campaign's decision to fly the travelling press corps out to Chicago while Obama, in secret, escaped to Diane Feinstein's house to powwow with Senator Hillary Clinton, the letter complains about "access" overall and "about being deceived by campaign aides."

From the letter:

The decision to mislead reporters is a troubling one. We hope this does not presage a relationship with the Obama campaign that is not based on a mutual respect for the truth. Our joint mission is to cover the candidate on behalf of our millions of worldwide viewers and readers. Those individuals expect truthful and fair coverage from us. Your campaign expects nothing short of that from us as well. Surely we should expect the same from you. We sincerely hope we can expect a relationship based on mutual trust in the coming months of coverage.

Going forward, we know from experience that covering a presidential campaign requires that some representatives of the press corps be with, or near, the Senator at all times as part of the "security package," just as the White House press corps is with the president. There may be times when the Senator needs to address the press corps about unexpected and dramatic news events, and there may be times when history demands the press corps be in close proximity to the Senator. This is standard operating procedure for the President of the United States, a job to which he aspires, and for presumptive nominees.

Compounding the complaint stemming from the June 6th Great Escape to the Feinstein Compound is an incident from last night, where the Washington Post's Anne Kornblut, who ended up sequestered to a pool house during an Obama fundraiser. This marks a step up from the men's room that the Clinton team used as the Texas Primary press room, but still - one expects the requirement of pool reporting to not be taken quite so literally.

There are components to Obama's media strategy that make a certain amount of sense. From all outward appearances, the campaign is feeling a little burned at the ineffective way the media has gone about batting down the most pernicious and egregious rumors and innuendos that have been floated about Obama, and, indeed, the press has more or less proven themselves to be more adept at promoting those rumors than they have been at debunking them. (Fox News' Brit Hume was peddling more of this sort of nonsense just last night.) And, of course, the Obama camp has, in the incidents featuring Jeremiah Wright's sermons, Michelle Obama's misstatements, and HuffPo's own Mayhill Fowler and her capturing of Obama's "bitter" comments, felt the searing heat that comes when the wrong clip gets widely disseminated through the media. But going back to the Kurtz article from January, Obama's campaign manager David Axelrod has suggested that the aloofness was all part of the grand plan:

But the contrast in his press strategy is striking, not just with Clinton's campaign -- which aggressively lobbies journalists around the clock -- but also with the Bush White House and the Clinton White House before that. And that, Obama aides say, is by design.

The Clinton camp, says David Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist, "is hyperbolic about it. What we don't do is spend six hours a day trying to persuade you guys that red is green or up is down. . . . Their own spin was 'We are the biggest, baddest street gang on the block.'

"We can't be pacifists and cede the battlefield," Axelrod says, but "what's powering this campaign is a rejection of tactical politics."

What the Obama campaign may be running up against here, is that the strategy has changed now that he's facing off against John McCain instead of trying to win a primary contest against a Democratic rival. The contrast struck by the Obama campaign while running against Clinton was a wise one - as anyone who ever had the unfortunate experience of listening to a Clinton campaign conference call can attest, the atmosphere was just as "aggressive" as Axelrod maintains, and (in my opinion, anyway) often searingly unpleasant. But McCain is a different story altogether - having famously courted the media as "his base," his cordial relationship with the travelling press corps threatens to redound to Obama's detriment by comparison.

And, of course, this recent letter suggests that the Obama campaign is already falling short of standard, suggesting that a change in strategy may be a good move. It's clear that the campaign harbors certain longstanding concerns - as evidenced by the launch of their own rumor-debunking Fight The Smears website and the full-tilt Michelle Obama charm offensive, underway in earnest this week. But an affable relationship with the press has its advantages - witness how the press continually presents John McCain as some sort of town hall oratorical genius, when in reality, he's extraordinarily gaffe prone in that format. Going forward, Obama's ability to find a happy medium with the press might be a make-or-break concern.

We are fighting two wars, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq and there is no press allowed to film in either place without consent and censorship by the White House. No pictures of coffins or funerals, no battlefield reporting...no photos of casualties of war - and the press is upset that Clinton and Obama pulled off a secret meeting?

I have been amazed by the ineptness of the American press to cover the constitutional crisis which is the imperial Presidency of George W Bush that violates civil liberties repeatedly, ignores the Constitution and the Geneva convention and has a justice Department that actively obstructs justice. This is the press that complains it is not taken seriously. Amazing.

I have been forced to read European Newspapers to find out what is going on in my country. Our "free press" is more concerned about its seating placement at political events than reporting on the constitutional crisis.

I am disgusted that the media has failed to debunk all the false rumors floated by the republicans about Obama's religion, heritage or personal activities. They run with every rumor, failing to document anything. Just as they treated the lies of the Swift Boat campaign as truth, they give credibility to Barack being a Muslim, a friend of terrorists - while McCain, who is heavily involved to this day with Charles Keating and is given a pass.

Piss on the Corporate owned fascist Press. They are worthless.

Honestly, the writer referencing in June an aloofness complaint placed in January?? And the press is miffed because two presidential contenders want to meet (gasp) in private, for once?

Where was this outrage when Bush blocked the press's access to the Iran war and it conceded to the in-bed/embed position? Where is the press's outrage in its control of the Justice Department? Where is its outrage in reportage of the Supreme Court? Where was this outrage when Reagan denied reporters access to cover Noriega et al.? Where is the press's outrage during the 2008 primary when male and female reporters both were placed within inches of urinals in a Men's bathroom to cover Sen. Clinton? Where is the press's outrage when it won't report on American coffins flown in under cover, save for the American flag?

Indeed there is much to outraged about, but this ain't it.

Gee, I wonder why Obama is treating the lap-dog press like the bunch of dogs they are?

"Boo Hoo Hoo, you tricked us!"

How many of these same idiots have been moaning about all the lies they've been told by the Bush Admin? Sycophantic hypocrites!!

The press are hypocrites. Nor do they report the news as is. They report out of context sound bites. Every one of them left out the "really" out of Michelle Obama's "for the first time I am (really) proud of my country" speech.

They lied to us when the Iraq war was on. They spread smears under the guise of " trying to get to the bottom of it" or "being fair and balanced"

They ask the wrong questions. They answer them themselves, rarely allowing a panelist time to extrapolate on a point.

BE ALOOF, OBAMA! BE VERY ALOOF!

Not a lot a sympathy here for the MSM. Maybe they can read some of these comments and apply their journalistic talents to interpreting the meaning.

Obama needs to remain insulated. After 8 years of the promotion of the lies of the bush cabal, twisting the truth in every way possible, wasting millions of dollars on crap like the deeds and misdeeds of Britney, Anna-Nicole, and Lindsay, and the failure to speak the PLAIN TRUTH to the sniveling "powers-that-be", anyone who place trust in the news reporting that has been shown to the world is fool. Now that we have lost Tim Russert, the only voice of reason and honesty that didn't try to deliver his message complete with sound effects (I like Olbermann but some of the emphasis is overdone) there is nowhere to turn for the truth. It is essential that Barack Obama protect himself from the smear campaigns the repus are turning themselves inside out to contrive.

Does anyone every consider the human being side of celebrity?

There is a certain amount of exposure that high profile indiiduals receive that is expected. The MSM has boosted its power by taking one incident and spending hours of air time reporting on every aspect of the situation.

We are exposed to good and bad journalism/entertainment styles.

When is it understandable that human beings need some for real personal space? That seems to be a life factor that we have been lead to believe does not apply to high profile folks period.

It is not difficult for me to imagine that there are days when the MSM's zeal to get the fresh scoop and the ratings bump for the day, is really an annoying process to go through.

As far as the side tracking of the press when Obama and Clinton met. I believe it was a good moe on their collective parts. The opportunity for two individuals to have a moment to work through what they both experienced. Did Hillary Clinton need to have the press up in her face during that particular moment in her political career? Not really. There was enough salting of the wounds going on in the MSM.

We tend to believe that it is in order to have even detail of an individual person should be put on display. Why? Some of the stories that have circulated in the press only indicate how slow it really is in terms of news.

When 'the press' starts reporting real news, perhaps they can get some respect...until then; not so much.

It cracks me up how the MSM pretends that the public isn't witness to everything,as if we need them to explain it to us. The MSM explained the reason for going to war with Iraq, didn't they? The MSM isn't about agenda as much as just stirring controversy to sell air time and their products. From a press perspective, that is irresponsible action, to make a story instead of merely reporting it. Now, they're mad and attacking. Ann Kornblut, Compton, Novak, Carlson, and the otehr press hacks are part of the problem. They can't be trusted.

I no longer support Obama, or any POTUS candidate, but that doesn't men he isn't right on this. To bad he caved on important issues like Iran War and FISA. When he starts sounding like McClinton on these issues, what's the real difference between him and her?

Obama should only give the MSM more access the day they prove they are no longer biased in favor of McCain over Obama. They day the MSM can leave their conservative bias at home is the day that the Obama campaign should become more accessible to the media.

the PRESS is put out because of treatment from Obama??!!! they've got to be kidding!
they only bother with a tiny portion of the truth in any story, rarely follow through on an issue, they're too lazy to do any investigation and rely on crap on the internet rather than anything real.
look at the twist on the public campaign financing alone. Obama was treated horribly. Mccain didn't even bother to answer the question about accepting public financing. Obama spent time telling what he thought was wrong with current laws and said that he would accept public financing only if he could negotiate agreement with the other side. since it's clear that mccain is ready to ignore the regulations whenever he can get an advantage, and he intends to use transportation from his wife without reimbursement, and there isn't a repub group in the country that takes him seriously and quits smear ads when asked, it would be stupid to think that any reasonable and fair arrangement could be agreed to and carried out with this bunch.

Oh please! A "mutual respect for the truth"? Since when is the press corp interested in the truth? They're interested in stories, which only happens to coincide with the truth by occasional happy coincidence.

This shows that Obama is far from naive. He knows what it takes to win a real fight. If you want to work your plan you can’t broadcast your every move. Go Obama, and be careful because they want that money machine you have developed. Don’t let the right hand know what the left hand is doing is a very handy proverb.
