WASHINGTON — The world's population will reach 7 billion in 2012, even as the global community struggles to satisfy its appetite for natural resources, according to a new government projection.

There are 6.7 billion people in the world today. The United States ranks third, with 304 million, behind China and India, according to projections released Thursday by the Census Bureau.

The world's population surpassed 6 billion in 1999, meaning it will take only 13 years to add a billion people.

By comparison, the number of people didn't reach 1 billion until 1800, said Carl Haub, a demographer at the Population Reference Bureau. It didn't reach 2 billion until 130 years later.

"You can easily see the effect of rapid population growth in developing countries," Haub said.

Haub said that medical and nutritional advances in developing countries led to a population explosion following World War II. Cultural changes are slowly catching up, with more women in developing countries going to school and joining the work force.

That is slowing the growth rate, though it is still high in many countries.

The global population is growing by about 1.2 percent per year. The Census Bureau projects the growth rate will decline to 0.5 percent by 2050.

By then, India will have surpassed China as the most populous country.

The Census Bureau updates projections each year on a variety of global demographic trends, including fertility and mortality rates and life expectancy. U.S. life expectancy has surpassed 78 years for the first time, the National Center for Health Statistics announced last week.

The new Census report comes amid record high oil and gasoline prices, fueled in part by growing demand from expanding economies in China and India.

There is no consensus on how many people the Earth can sustain, said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. He said it depends on how well people manage the Earth's resources.

Today, industrialized nations use a disproportionate share of oil and other resources, while developing countries are fueling population growth.

There are countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East where the average woman has more than six children in her lifetime. In Mali and Niger, two African nations, women average more than seven children.

"There's still a long way to go in the developing world," Frey said. "A lot of it does have to do with the education of women and the movement of women into the labor force."

In the U.S., women have an average of about two children, which essentially replaces the population. Much of the U.S. population growth comes from immigration.

What a comforting thought. To be living in the midst of a species that is breeding itself out of existence, killing its host, the only home it has. Humanity is worse than a virus or parasites. At least most of them keep their host alive to survive. Some serious education need to happen IMMEDIATELY, mainly in parts of the world where EVERYONE HAS THE SAME HAIR COLOUR, to STOP BREEDING. Stop creating humans that have no chance for survival.

Good way of putting it.

I didn't see anything in the article about how to feed the starving billions. Did anyone else?

Anyone remember ZPG? Zero Population Growth?

That is an idea that should be hammered home to the populations of the world or else we are going to look like that old Star Trek episode where it was so crowded there was no space to move.

First we shame the religions that REFUSE to accept condoms, the Pill, and other methods of birth control instead of convincing all those poor dumb ignorant people to just keep popping kids out.

We are scwing ourselves out of a place at the dinner table.

We will have to limit our numbers severely unless we want a world like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Inside
Where 99.9% of 75 billion people live inside huge buildings and never leave them, there is no exposure to the outside, nature, no wilderness left or any other invertebrates left, but there is total sexual freedom but
manipulating behavior with drugs and a zero tolerance policy on crime.

Other posts are correct unless humans limit our numbers all other challenges that humans face will make no difference. And actually to make a better planet we should reduce our population to LESS than what there is now. Sadly it seems like enough of us still don't get it.

I sense population control would be as popular with the fascists as suggesting we raise the driving age to 18.

And whatever we do, let's not do it voluntarily, that would require thinking ahead, something we haven't shown ourselves able to do for the several million years we've already been here. Hey, I wonder what the earth would look like now if some forethought had been put into any single frigging thing mankind has done.

Nah, it's ours, let's just take it.

Actually, I think population control IS popular with the Fascists.

I do recall something about eugenics....

The same kind of mind that wants to control the reproductive habits of others, is usually drawn to Fascism.

So what is your solution? Most intelligent people would prefer to start a program of ZPG. Replace yourself and stop having 5, 10 or 20 kids.

We simply cannot tell people to just keep having all the kids they want because we will reach a tipping point.

So what do you propose? Just keep scwring ourselves out of a place at the dinner table?

So you admit that pro-lifers are fascists.

For all the talk about why we're having more rapid climate change, the one obvious reason that no one talks about is the over population of the planet. We have gone from hitting one billion people around 1800, to almost 7 billion now. That's a lot for Mother Earth to handle.

We're contributing our own natural gas to the warming, and we keep blaming the cows. Think of all the CO2 we produce just from exhaling.

So is it any wonder when many people are killed in natural disasters nowadays? People are living in areas they weren't living in 30-40 years ago. I mean we lost 200,00 people between China and Burma. 200,000! Think about that!

The planet is sick. We're like a case of the runs for it, and every now and then the planet will need to "flush us" out of it's system. If we don't blow it up the Earth willb e here long after we're gone.

Feel free to explain how exponential growth can continue indefinitely in a closed system, and your comment might have merit.

People like you tim are true morons. Why do people like you just MAKE UP LIES?

You continually put up false analogies, phony arguments and yet have NO solutions for the problems facing this planet over the next several decades.

So what is the purpose of your trolling? Just to show your rear end?

All talk and no help?

Sorry but we've had enough of that sort of attitude with the current criminal administration in this country. Lots of talk but it always boils down to doing whatever is profitable for corporations tomorrow without any regard to the future.

So tell us since you are convinced we liberals all hate America, hate humanity and whatever other garbage of hate spews out of your vile mouth.

Tell us.

No ... no ... Friedman says laisse faire population control is the answer and global economist all over the world kiss his ass. http://www.daviddfriedman.com/Academic/Laissez-Faire_In_Popn/L_F_in_Population.html

Why ... can't have an ever expanding economy without ever expanding people ...

Peak Oil will take care of the problem. In the U.S. it will start with empty grocery store shelves.

If the do-gooder liberals would quit feeding them with everyone else's money, we wouldn't have an over-population problem. Their populations would have been culled the natural way.

The battle to feed humanity is over. In the course of the 1970's, the world will experience starvation of tragic proportions, hundreds of millions of people will starve to death." ~ Paul Ehrlich, The Population Bomb, 1968

“In the best of times, our days are numbered anyway. So it would be a crime against nature for any generation to take the world crisis so solemnly, that it put off enjoying those things for which we were designed in the 1st place: the opportunity to do good work, to enjoy friends, to fall in love, to hit a ball, and to bounce a baby.” ~ Alistair Cooke

Even animals sense when to modify their behavior in order to survive. What is happening to us? Why the right wing push against abortion or gays. It must be good to have population growth for diaper-makers or toothpaste manufacturers. Perhaps they should realize this planet is already over-populated.
