NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged Jewish voters to denounce the whisper campaign that for months has pushed the false rumor that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim.

Bloomberg, mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate for both parties, warned a Jewish group in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday that the attempt to portray Obama as a shadowy Muslim with a hidden agenda often targets Jewish voters online and with e-mails.

The deceptive campaign against Obama, who is Christian, "threatens to undo the enormous strides that Jews and Muslims have made together in this country," the New York mayor said.

The lies are "cloaked in concern for Israel, but the real concern is about partisan politics," said Bloomberg, who is Jewish. "This is wedge politics at its worst, and we've got to reject it _ loudly, clearly and unequivocally."

Obama, asked about Bloomberg's comments at a news conference later in the day, said he hadn't heard them but was happy to know the mayor was defending him.

"I like Mayor Bloomberg," Obama said. "I think he's a terrific mayor."

Bloomberg, a billionaire independent, had considered making his own run for the White House this year, but decided against it. He has said his endorsement and potential financial backing could still be up for grabs, and there has been occasional chatter about how the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned independent might make a good running mate for either Obama or Republican John McCain.

Either way, Bloomberg's passionate defense of Obama in front of a Jewish audience in Florida could help the Illinois senator in the state, which is home to many Jewish voters. He made the remarks while Obama was on a separate, two-day campaign swing through Florida, with stops in Jacksonville and Miami.

Story continues below

Some have questioned Obama's commitment to Israel; this stems partly from his stated willingness to talk with leaders of rogue nations, which McCain and others have criticized as a sign he underestimates the threat posed to Israel by Iran and others in the Middle East.

There is also uneasiness about Obama among some Jewish people because his former church pastor has praised black Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan, who has made anti-Semitic remarks. Obama has disavowed his pastor and left the church.

Earlier this month in a speech to Jewish activists in Washington, Obama referred to the e-mail campaign against him as one "filled with tall tales and dire warnings."

The Muslim rumors have persisted for months, creating occasional difficulties for the campaign. At a rally in Detroit this week, Obama campaign volunteers prohibited two Muslim women who were wearing head scarves from sitting in an area behind him that would be visible in photo and video footage. One of the volunteers reportedly cited "a sensitive political climate" as the reason.

Obama later apologized to the women and said the volunteers were not carrying out campaign policy.

Bloomberg noted in his speech Friday how racial and religious tensions have cooled, and remained calm, in New York City _ an achievement for which he is often praised.

One thing he has learned, Bloomberg said, is that one must speak out against those who spread "fear and stereotypes."

"That's why I'm speaking out today," he said, "and I hope all of you will join me throughout this campaign in strongly speaking out against this fear mongering, no matter who you'll be voting for."

Asked later about the potential of being a running mate, Bloomberg said "nobody's ever going to ask me" but didn't rule out accepting the No. 2 job.

It is a nice thing that Mayor Bloomberg is defending Senator Obama - decent people can stand up against character destruction. These people show a good face of America

there must be a lot of hateful american jews if such a high profile american jew has to headline a media event to assure everyone that obambam is not muslim, nor ever has been. the irony is stupefying. what of the american muslims? the democrats don't need people like this. the republican party, on the other hand, is perfect for them.

an aside, since germany is the ancestral home of most americans shouldn't those americans be assured by some candidate that america will support the fatherland.

so delicious!

Democrats of all stripes, many independents and even some Republicans are jumping on the Obama bandwagon.

After all, not many want to back a sure loser

This is VERY good for Obama. A jewish Mayor unequivocally defending him in Jewish rich Florida. Talk about having an effective surrogate.

Davesean,

I don't believe those stories about him being Muslim and his half-brother claiming he was raised Muslim, If his half-bother actually said that. But point here is how many times did he see his father and brother(s) over his lifetime. He's dad was absent part of his life. He only saw him twice.

He' was raised by his white mother and white grandparents. I could really see these good white folks raising their child and grandson as a muslim. Sorry, it didn't happen and it doesn't make sense. The muslim smear is just a thing to get people afraid of the candidate because he is diffierent from all the other presidents that we had. Mostly because he's black and for some reason a lot of white folks are afraid of this. As Jon Steward says are you afraid that Obama is going to enslave the white race. Ridiculous, but I believe some people believe this fear.

here's the reality. It won't matter if Obama is president. It is not going to change the structure of power in the country and that it's controled by white males. If he tries to upset or inblance the structure, there will be trouble for him. Most folks of color know that not much is going to change with a black president or hell even a woman president. For the time being, the american power structure is going to remain the status quo regardless of who's president.

Bullshit. Plain and simple. Most of what you said here was not only slanderous, but also flatly faulty logic and based on cynical biases that reveal your fundamental misunderstanding of how power in America has been cultivated and how the system itself is what is producing these results and that with a non-white president (or a female president) exactly how fragile that so-called intransigent hold on power that "white males" have will be made more clear.

No need to apologize. You can't offend when what you say should be ignored.

I don't know why so many people are concerned about the obviously false rumors that Obama is Mulim. I mean, if he was, don't you think the Republicans would have already used this to pack him off to Guantanamo Bay? I mean, that IS how Republicans win elections, isn't it?

If you want to worry about a truly scary rumor, one with the potential to destroy our country, there's a really vicious rumor going around that you should be worrying about.

And I know you've all heard this rumor:

George W. Bush is a Christian.

How anyone would believe such a vicious rumor is beyond me. But apparently, at least 50 million American voters have already bought into this one.

So, let me follow the great example of Michael Bloomberg, and denounce another vicious, low-ball, politically motivated lie:

George W. Bush is not now, and has never been, a Christian.

Please do everything you can to help dispell the rumor that George W. Bush is a Christian. It's the least any of us can do for our country.

Yes, but let's remember that the only thing "vicious" about saying Obama is a Muslim is that its an intentional LIE, designed--as Mayor Bloomberg so commendably said, by Republican fear-mongers who want to "spread fear and stereotypes."

The intent is evil. But there's nothing wrong or in any way insulting about someone being a Muslim (sometimes the comments in the press make it sound like it is).

Of course, Obama is an obviously very devout Christian. But do Republican voters (to whom religion seems to be so important) know anything about McCain's religious affiliation, denomination, or beliefs? I can't remember him every talking about attending church regularly. Does he? Does anyone know?

Just taking it at face value, it seems Mr. Bloomberg did a decent thing here to try to counteract an extremely dishonourable slime campaign.

Any decent person would do the same, I'm sure he would agree.

RIGHT STILL CARRYING OUT MUSLIM SMEARS CAMPAGN
SEE EXCEPTS BELOW

Keep Reading For A Sneak Preview Of Our Latest Expose Obama Commercial Which Poses the Question: "Was Barack Hussein Obama a Muslim. He says 'no,' but the Associated Press found records...."

But before we go any further... let's make one thing perfectly clear. It doesn't really matter whether Barack Hussein Obama WAS a Muslim or not!

What DOES matter is -- Can Barack Hussein Obama be trusted?

Is Barack Hussein Obama side-stepping questions about his Muslim childhood?

And if so... WHY?

Pivotal questions come to mind:

is there more information -- as of yet undisclosed -- that Obama thinks the American people would find repugnant?

if he is side-stepping questions, is it because he REALLY believes that the patriotic people of America are all GUN-TOTIN', BIBLE-THUMPIN' bigots and thus incapable of understanding the full-and-complete TRUTH?

and perhaps the most important question is, WHY DO the liberal media and other assorted Obamaniacs, scramble about and circle the wagons around Barack Hussein Obama EVERY SINGLE TIME QUESTIONS ABOUT HIM ARE RAISED?

dean, I hope you're not the paranoid fearmongering person you seem to be. You've apparently stepped back into the "McCarthy era". So far andhistorically, its been the Indian threat, black threat, communist threat, chinese threat, Iraq threat, Iranian threat, immigrant threat, etc.
Sounds as if your'e afraid to live and afraid to die. At least have the common decency to let those of us who want to live the chance to without your paranoia. Go away. If there is repugnant information about Obama, I'm sure you'll find it and "readily" share it with us..

If your father was a killer am I to assume that you are a killer too?

He says in his book Dream's of My Father he went to a Muslim school in Indonesia and a Catholic School. Who's fault is that his decease mother? I bet you dig her up to get that confession. I went to a Catholic preschool and I ain't catholic. I went to a church for 20 years and thought that you was going to hell if you did believe the Bible. Without knowing different religions I stayed there because my grandmother made me. I learned the Christianity is a hateful religious when it should be loving. Remember the KKK was good ole Christians too. Bible in one hand noose in the other. You can not blame the man for his childhood he did not choose it he had no choice. As for Trinity he stay there for fellowship. It is a sin " No man shall come before me" (that means the preacher) Rev Wright who BTW in 1/4 white. Betcha didn't know that. His Grandmother was Irish. A person name means nothing unless it Michael Bolton. (Office Space) Grow up I bet you know how many black people have been at your house? Do you have Muslim, Buddhist, Atheist, or liberal friends. If you do you understand that people are people we have no control on other people except ourselves. So start looking within and you will find your own hate.

He doesn't have a Muslim childhood. His father was born into a Muslim family but he was not a practicing Muslim. Obama went to secular schools and Catholic schools. He was raised by white Christian grandparents from Kansas. He has been a professed Christian throughout his adult life. There is no question to ask or answer about Islam and Obama. There is only the bitter lies of small minded people hoping the same people who were ignorant enough to believe GOP lies about Saddam Hussein and his nonexistent WMDs will believe their ugly lies about Obama.

FL is just where Bloomberg needed to be saying just that. Good for him. I don't think in terms of white or black or hispanic voters, evangelical protestant or Catholic or Jewish voters, educated and upper income or uneducated and lower income. I tend to think of voters as knowledgeable or not knowledgeable. Covers all races, religions, and socio-economic status. It's hard to imagine anyone who thinks through the options would elect to vote for McCain. I'm a NYer and I like Bloomberg but he's not really national figure or of sufficient statue to be vp. That he made this speech to this audience in FL, however, tells us that he's no McCain supporter and that speaks to his intelligence.

I think people are fooled by Obama they still dont get it. I suspect its partly the name and their prejudices. Obama is more of a friend to Isarel than McCain. If McCain was a friend to Isarel he would be smart enough to know that creating a vacuum in Iraq would mean empowering Iran and Syria. McCain is too DUMB or is purposely acting Dumb to figure out the Geopolitics of the middle east. The IRaq war is not just the worse thing to happen to AMerica its the worse thing to happen to Israel. We need SMART governning NOT bluster. He listens to all sides of an argument even the one he disagrees with. He is NOT afraid to listen to people who dont agree with him and thats why most people are afraid they are comfortable with only people that agree with them that see the world as they do. It takes a special person to listen to all sides and not feel small or lack confidence and thats what he brings. He is a staunch supporter of Israel but he wants solution pragmatic solutions. THe man has TWO young daughters you dont think he wants them to grow up in a world where they can be proud of. Even if he is a muslim whats wrong with that why dos it bring fear to them. Its so sad seeing people pathetic and afraid and unable to use their brain.

Jewish voters are too savvy to be fooled by these right-wing sponsored rumors. But it's always helpful for someone like Bloomberg to remind people that they are complete lies.

In general that may be true, but the Florida crowd is something different entirely. Not to say that old people are stuck in their ways....but I think the neocon plan is to hurl a ton of mud and just hope that some of it will stick.

Justice would be having it rebound.
