NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged Jewish voters to denounce the whisper campaign that for months has pushed the false rumor that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim.

Bloomberg, mentioned as a possible vice presidential candidate for both parties, warned a Jewish group in Boca Raton, Fla., on Friday that the attempt to portray Obama as a shadowy Muslim with a hidden agenda often targets Jewish voters online and with e-mails.

The deceptive campaign against Obama, who is Christian, "threatens to undo the enormous strides that Jews and Muslims have made together in this country," the New York mayor said.

The lies are "cloaked in concern for Israel, but the real concern is about partisan politics," said Bloomberg, who is Jewish. "This is wedge politics at its worst, and we've got to reject it _ loudly, clearly and unequivocally."

Obama, asked about Bloomberg's comments at a news conference later in the day, said he hadn't heard them but was happy to know the mayor was defending him.

"I like Mayor Bloomberg," Obama said. "I think he's a terrific mayor."

Bloomberg, a billionaire independent, had considered making his own run for the White House this year, but decided against it. He has said his endorsement and potential financial backing could still be up for grabs, and there has been occasional chatter about how the Democrat-turned-Republican-turned independent might make a good running mate for either Obama or Republican John McCain.

Either way, Bloomberg's passionate defense of Obama in front of a Jewish audience in Florida could help the Illinois senator in the state, which is home to many Jewish voters. He made the remarks while Obama was on a separate, two-day campaign swing through Florida, with stops in Jacksonville and Miami.

Some have questioned Obama's commitment to Israel; this stems partly from his stated willingness to talk with leaders of rogue nations, which McCain and others have criticized as a sign he underestimates the threat posed to Israel by Iran and others in the Middle East.

There is also uneasiness about Obama among some Jewish people because his former church pastor has praised black Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan, who has made anti-Semitic remarks. Obama has disavowed his pastor and left the church.

Earlier this month in a speech to Jewish activists in Washington, Obama referred to the e-mail campaign against him as one "filled with tall tales and dire warnings."

The Muslim rumors have persisted for months, creating occasional difficulties for the campaign. At a rally in Detroit this week, Obama campaign volunteers prohibited two Muslim women who were wearing head scarves from sitting in an area behind him that would be visible in photo and video footage. One of the volunteers reportedly cited "a sensitive political climate" as the reason.

Obama later apologized to the women and said the volunteers were not carrying out campaign policy.

Bloomberg noted in his speech Friday how racial and religious tensions have cooled, and remained calm, in New York City _ an achievement for which he is often praised.

One thing he has learned, Bloomberg said, is that one must speak out against those who spread "fear and stereotypes."

"That's why I'm speaking out today," he said, "and I hope all of you will join me throughout this campaign in strongly speaking out against this fear mongering, no matter who you'll be voting for."

Asked later about the potential of being a running mate, Bloomberg said "nobody's ever going to ask me" but didn't rule out accepting the No. 2 job.

As a Jewish person, I admit that Israel is one of my biggest concerns and I would not vote for a president who did not fully support Israel's right to existance and Jerusalem...thankfully for me, both these candidates believe in Israel's existance fully...so it's now time to look at the Jewish people's other beliefs. On the most part, according to statistics throughout the years, Jews are Pro-choice, pro Civil Unions for homosexuals, and for universal healthcare.
Obama is pro choice, pro civil unions, and for universal healthcare.
Mccain is pro-life, anti civil unions, and I don't even know if he has a healthcare plan.
These rumors will go away, and just like in every election except 2004, the democrat will win the HUGE majority of the Jewish voters.

I have to tell you, I remember seeing the docos of the 1947 Israeli independence. With tears in my eyes, having seen the docos of the Holocaust. Ah, but then, I have seen docos of Israeli tactics used to kick out Palestinians, destroy their homes, discredit their past, and "poison their wells". That, too, made me extremely sad. So, let me tell you, Israel has a right to exist, but has gone about it all wrong. They are like spoiled brats, acting in a way like the fascists. And I don't think that they will have an easy time of earning world trust. But ordinary Jewish people, Israeli and the Diaspora alike, are basically good people. They understand the past, and they understand what it takes to make peace. Don't be naive, the Israeli government has a lot more to do before peace is even possible. A lot more trust must be gained, and Israel has not made a good job of it, all the way from 1946.

And its posts like yours that will do more to sway the Jewish vote away from Obama to McCain.
You see the problem is many of the Obama supporters seem to have bought into the mythical narrative that the Arabs have sold them.
To date even Abbas, the supposed moderate "Palestinian" will not recognize Israel as a Jewish State. Why not? After all, that is what the UN had in mind when they partitioned the land. On the subject of partition, wasn't it the Arabs who rejected peace in 1948 and waged war with the Jews attempting to finish what Hitler had started? Didn't the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, the leader of the Arabs who lived in British mandated Palestine spend the war years in Berlin with Hitler and wasn't he eventually indicted for war crimes having helped to organize an SS brigade of Bosnian Muslims ?
The Arabs have shown nothing but hatred for the Israelis. They teach their kids that killing a Jew sends them immediately to paradise but you think its the Israelis who are somehow in the wrong?
You are exactly why Republicans believe they can grab the Jewish vote. Your sentiment and what you believe scares the daylights out of me and leads me to believe Israel's existence is more important than ever.
Remember this, if the Arabs put down their guns there will be peace. If the Jews put down their guns, their will be no Jews.

Go Bloomberg! I don't always agree with him, but I do think as far as politicians go, he's got good instincts, he's not a crook.

I think this issue about the women with Muslim head scarves sitting behind the Senator at rallies is a potential land mine.

Obama has said that the "whisper campaign" is not only untrue, but unfair to Muslims -- it makes Muslim a dirty word. That being said, the visual can and WILL be used by the other side as a subliminal undermining of his stance.

It's a free country. But it's a easily manipulated country too. Look what they did with the harmless photo of him in Kenyan garb. Or the fist bump. Or the lapel pin, or no hand over heart.... visuals can and will be misused.

In this climate, you have to be careful.

I wouldn't put it past them to have headscarf wearing trolls demanding seats behind him.

Having been an Obama volunteer, who helped at a town hall meeting in PA, I can say that volunteers get minimal instructions from the campaign organizers (who are all barely drinking age) besides what is practical for the assigned task. Anyone can volunteer. I'm a stay at home mom to a special needs child, I've never been active in politics before. This campaign is very, very grass roots. We're in it 'cause we're passionate. I believe with all my heart that the two volunteers were acting on their own concerns, and were not instructed by the campaign to do anything.

I don't even understand why the volunteers offered the women an explanation. If I was at a rally and asked to sit behind Obama on stage and was told "No", I'd just think, "Okay. They want someone else, or they already have enough people."

Obviously, the crowds behind the candidates are always chosen for a blend, with the camera in mind. If they already have what they want--or they want a different "look" than mine--so what?

I guess I'm surprised that people would feel entitled to be sitting on stage, or feel they're owed an explanation if the volunteers want someone else.

I would allow the campaign to choose who sits behind him, and screen for lots of things. It's not like they're barring anyone from a rally or a town hall meeting.

That may be half-right, but they didn't do it all by themselves.

Problem is, many people can't distinguish between support for Israel and support for Likud policies. That has been part of the genius of the Israeli far right, whose policies, not uncoincidentally, have become those of the American military.

Want proof? Just read the statements of Israeli politicians and match those to the Bush administration's statements, and yes, also the Christian right.

"Problem is, many people can't distinguish between support for Israel and support for Likud policies."

Why should they? This is just utter nonsense used by people who don't even know what they're talking about.

Likud was the Israeli political party in power during the signing of the peace agreement with Egypt.

Boy they sure sound like some evil demonic entity, don't they?

And that damn wall they built ... hmmmm suicide bombing down about 80%.
Yeah another evil idea from Likud - especially from those who now can't send the bombers in as easy as they used to.

Speaking of Israeli politicians, why not quote the words of the Israeli Arab politicians who sit in the Knesset if you want some red hot rhetoric ... sometimes out and out treason.

But there it is, Israeli Democracy in action and why America supports the only democracy in the Middle East.

They need to be convinced that Obama will act in a balanced and bipartisan way with the Israelis AND the Palestinians if there is ever going to be a two state solution. I understand their feelings of mistrust, but they are misguided. The alternative is to have a permanent state of conflict which is what George Bush has offered.Hamas has only gotten stronger despite the effort of Israel to deprive the Gazans of all the essentials of life, in essence trying to commit genocide. It is not working and Jewish people in America need to understand that it is best to have a compromise than a permanent state of conflict. Many many Israelis feel this way; It is just he Likud government which is intransigent.

Israel left Gaza Jew free years ago l... yes Jew free because the Arabs there prefer no Jews unlike the Jews. The first days after Israel removed Jews who had lived in Gaza for 35 years, raising families, they received the gift that's kept on giving ever since. -- qassam rockets fired into Israeli cities in the hopes that they will fall on a school or hospital or some old person or kill anyone who happens to get in the rocket's path. Almost 8,000 of these to date.

So I'm confused here since you seem to think Israel is depriving the Gazans - the very same poeple who are attacking Israel daily with rockets - the essentials of life. Seems to me, when people are shooting rockets at your cities trying to kill you, you shouldn't be supplying them with the means to continue.

Can you explain your reasoning?

These GOP agents are getting very desperate, and they will stop at nothing to execute their campaign of fear, smear and confusion on the American people. With generally respected players like Bloomberg casting a bright spotlight on them, even people with half-a-brain will see them for the cockroaches they really are.

I read this as just another commonly found spelling error...

Sorry, steve, couldn't resist. But, seriously... any individual Jew can vote for anyone s/he wants. But do you really have any argument that might relate to core Jewish values (tshuvah, tzedakah, tfilliah -- repentance/change, justice and prayer), or are you simply touting your own secular agenda wrapped in cloak of "religion".

I've responded to a lot of the bullshit anti-semitism and irrational Israel hate pandered by a small but active minority of Huffington Posters. And I must say that your above statement appears to me to be laden with the same heaping spoons full of ignorance and/or willful disregard for any rational analysis of the issues dished out by those low lives.

Polls show Jews are supporting Obama over McCain almost 2 to 1. Why? Because Jews are highly educated and can see that not only has the Republican Party agenda been disastrous for both the US and Israel, it's totally beholden to the religious right - many factions of which are repulsively anti-Semitic. All Jews should vote for Obama! (And yes, I'm Jewish).

It's excellent that Bloomberg has the good sense and decency to speak out publicly to eradicate these incidious, untrue rumors about Obama.

One more thing that should be said to Jewish audiences: McCain is anti-choice and will appoint people to the Supreme Court who will deny women the right to control their own bodies.

I am extraordinarily pleased that Bloomberg has taken this step. Obama stands for positions that the vast majority of Jewish voters have defended over the years.

And while this may not seem important at first, just Obama's "exotic" name is important for "minority" voters across the country. Think for a moment how it will feel to have a president with more than one or two syllables in name.

Jewish voters in my opinion are frightened NOT about Obama's positions on Israel, but that Obama may choose at some point, to pander to some of his support that comes from the Left and far Left which (as can easily be seen on this site) is getting more and more virulently anti Israel which often mutates into out and out Jew hatred.

You Jews here know exactly what I mean.
