Dobbs

Thursday night, Lou Dobbs called for George Bush's impeachment over his mismanagement of the Food and Drug Administration which has, in Dobbs' view, ultimately led to the ongoing salmonella scare surrounding tomatoes.

Watch and read Dobbs' comments below (via ThinkProgress):

You know, I have heard a lot of reasons over the years as to why George W. Bush should be impeached. For them to leave the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in this state, its leadership in this sorry condition and to have no capacity apparently or will to protect the American consumer - that is alone to me sufficient reason to impeach a president who has made this agency possible and has ripped its guts out in its ability to protect the American consumer. It's insane what is going on here.

Watch it:

In his "Beat the Press" segment, Dan Abrams mocked Dobbs' conspiracy theory that the government was enabling the salmonella scare around tomatoes. "Ah yes, they are doing it to help boost the sale of avocados in sandwiches instead!" Abrams said.

why does dan abrams feel he has to be one of these loud talking heads on cable tv? he used to be more neutral ... now he is just screaming and ranting about everything. the funny thing is, he looks like he's not 100% comfortable with it. i often wonder when watching him if his producers put him up to it.

IF the tomatoes could get him impeached then I'll take anything I can get.

That the FDA is in this shape because it has been gutted by the administration is in my opinion impeachable as well.

I like Lou but dang what has he got against Obama. I wrote him and told him i was turning him off until after Obama was elected.

The fundamental thing is that the Republicans want go control the government they do not actually want to govern (Other than perhaps waging wars and giving money to supporters). Protecting consumers from poisonous food? How 'big government'! How 'nanny state'. Why should the government be so intrusive into your lives to keep you from coffee that might burn you, cars that guzzle gas, rivers that might run to high or tomatoes that might kill you! (Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?)

It should be the free market! Right Lou? If some tomatoes might kill you then consumers will certainly instead pay more for the tomatoes that will be less likely to kill you. That will provide more than enough incentive for the growers of killer tomatoes to switch to less disease inducing types. Of course some people might have to become violently ill in order for the rest of us to know which tomatoes are worth paying more for, but only in some socialized medicine country is it the governement's job to keep you from getting sick.

That is the Republican way! The government has no role protecting you from your own bad purchasing decisions, like buying tomatoes that will make you terribly sick!

(And yes, the above was sarcasm, mostly)

You are right. From now on the Republicans should be forced to taste all food before it goes to market. Put their mouth where their money is!

Jesus Christ, would somebody put this guy out of his misery? I used to kind of enjoy watching Dobbs, but the man has gone over the edge! He can't think about anything that he can't blame on Mexican immigrants.

There is no gentle way to break it to people who have their comments removed from HP or HP doesn't use their comment. HP is a profit making enterprise which sells ads. If my or your comment doesn't get used by users of HP, HP pulls the comment. HP's monitors/editors decide which comments will appear on HP; if they decide a comment won't be used by those who use HP, it doesn't appear on HP. Advertisers who use HP pay a rate based on how many users of HP are on-line. If you don't attract users of HP, your blog disappears from or isn't used by HP. HP is driven by ad revenues.
Check out HP's FAQ's to find out what HP will never tolerate in a comment for other reasons that HP won't use a comment. HP depends on ad money to make a profit. That is also true of other American media. That is true of most, if not all, capitalist media.

i think its fine if hufpo yanks people's comments.

then we as users and readership/audience get to make our choice as well. we can just leave...

then hufpo can tell their advertisers that they don't have the numbers they used to have because of their new "standards".

it goes both ways.... just like any other "marketplace"

I would love to see Busch do the perp walk as much as anyone else. That being said the FDA has been in a sorry state way before he took office. They spend most of their budget approving drugs, many we don't need. The food side is understaffed.

Also, we are continuing to see a huge shift in agriculture in the last century. Small farms have given way to large agribusiness, which has gone unchecked with poor regulations and deep pockets for lobbyists. The potato salad that used to get a church group sick now affects a dozen states.

Support local organic food. Know where your food comes from. It is hands down better in taste and can be economic when going to farmers markets and co-ops.

Exactly puffhost. organic foods are the way to go, support your local farmers market; the taste between vegies and fruit from a farmers market and your local supermarket is like night and day.
There's nothing elitist about wanting to provide healthy food for your family. Prices at farmers market are not any higher than your local supermarket.

You all need to become familiar with Agenda 21 and the Codex Alimentarius before you laugh at Dobbs.

Do some reading, then come back and look at the situation again.
