I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Kerry

It is a lesson in just how persistent and irritating smear campaigns can be. Nearly four years after the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth trotted out a series of outrageous accusations about John Kerry's war record, the issue is still being litigated within the halls of politics. Only this time, it is the accusers who are on the defensive.

On Thursday, ten veterans who witnessed or served with John Kerry in Vietnam penned a lengthy letter to T. Boone Pickens - the Texas oil tycoon and major SBVT financier - taking him up on his challenge to prove false one element of that group's attacks from the 2004 campaign.

"Dear Mr. Pickens," the letter (pdf) begins, "We are the crew and individual servicemen who served on or with Patrol Craft Fast 94 in Vietnam in early 1969... Regrettably the lies of the SBVT, which you helped bankroll and apparently still defend, tarnished the sacrifices we made, called into question the medals we were awarded and challenged the very authenticity of our service... We have children and families who were deeply affected by these lies and we believe you and the SBVT whom you supported owe us and the American people an apology for the tactics you bankrolled.

"We are aware of media reports that at a dinner in Washington D.C. on November 6th, 2007, you made a public challenge that you would give a million dollars to anyone who could show that anything the SBVT said was false. We also know that Senator John Kerry, who was the skipper of the PCF-94, contacted you to take you up on that challenge. We are writing to you now as a group to accept your challenge and document how you funded lies and character assassination."

What follows, aides to Kerry say, is one of the most comprehensive conglomerations of evidence disputing the SBVT attacks. Taking on the argument that, somehow, Kerry didn't deserve his Silver Star, the signatories dispute ten "falsehoods," including the claim that Kerry chased and killed a "young Viet Cong in loincloth" (it was an actually a "man of normal military age" carrying a B-40 rocket); that he only was in combat with this one individual (there were "multiple VC scrambling to get away"); and that Kerry made a tactical error in captaining his boat that day ("there was no 'plan' to charge the bank"). The letter concludes with perhaps the most poignant and currently relevant point.

"Finally, the continued insistence that Kerry has not released his full military record is refuted by the Navy, which has publicly certified he has, and by three newspapers which have independently received signed releases and reviewed those records."

Indeed, it is important to remember that in 2004, Kerry posted military records on his campaign's website and allowed selected reporters access to his military medical records. After the campaign, he signed a 180 waiver, authorizing the release of his complete file to three publications.

At the time, the SBVT claimed they couldn't trust that this was the entire cache. No such protests were aired about President Bush's refusal to overturn Vietnam related documents. Currently, Sen. John McCain has released 19 pages of his Nave file to the Associated Press. But, as documented by Jeffrey Klein, there could be upwards of 600 pages that have not been made public.

What kind of response Kerry's Vietnam contemporaries receive from Pickens remains to be seen. The Texan, who supports McCain, said in November that he would give $1 million to anyone who could disprove a single one of the allegations made by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Kerry took him up on the challenge, promising to donate the proceeds to the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Pickens then reneged, saying he would need to see combat films, additional military records and wartime journal. The current letter contains a 40-plus-page file of such evidence (sans combat films).

That Kerry and his allies are fighting back with such vigor four years after the fact may seem bittersweet for Democrats. Pickens, after all, does not seem poised to play as influential a role in this campaign as he did in 2004, when he invested $3 million into the SBVT ads. The outfit he was connected to this go-around - Freedom's Watch - has so far been hampered by financial problems. Meanwhile, his spokesman Jay Rosser, recently told Politico: "He is not giving anything to 527s involved in the presidential race this cycle, and has communicated that...to Republican strategists and operatives."

But for the Vietnam Vets, the SBVT attacks were not strictly political. And setting the record straight, even if Pickens is not, currently, a political lightening rod, is worth doing even four years after the 2004 election.

For them, they've wanted to clear the record for years. And have looked for every opportunity to do that," said Kerry aide David Wade. 'For some of these guys whose lives are not politics it has had a profound impact. When they saw the Pickens explanation in November they were pretty stunned by that... the crew said let us have a shot."

It is a lesson in just how persistent and irritating smear campaigns can be. Nearly four years after the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth trotted out a series of outrageous accusations about John Kerry's...

Four, five, ten, 20 years............ it is still not to late........ I am a Vietnam vet with the USMC and this isn't just about Kerry and the election.......................it's also about the fact that when people decide to break all the rules of decency, fair play, and to spread lies and distortions that question the honor of others.... they need to know that there is no Statute of Limitations for the attempted murder of another;s reputation. These character assassins continue to do it because they know they can get away with it.........and the only reason they get away with it is because we get bored and anxious to "move on" and get past it. I say keep after the bastards, chase them, hound them, stalk them for the rest of their lives if need be. I want them to always be looking over their shoulder until justice is served. We only need to do this a few times to a few of these type of perpetrators and the message will get out.

No - it's important to challenge the liars and get the truth out there. It's never too late to hold these smear mongers accountable. If Kerry's people have the documents to prove the swiftboaters lied, Its a crime called slander/libel (if printed) - and the liars can be prosecuted. I hope their butts get dragged into a court of law for their lies against good men who served this country in VN.

Sooner or later you have to make a stand. We've been "moving on" and letting these white-collar thugs get away with this kind of stuff for years. If we don't try to stop them now, when will we? They'll keep it up as long as they think they can get away with it. Brave, honorable men were slandered and maligned. They get away with it because Democrats/the left don't seem to have the stomach for an all-out fight for the truth. And making this stand for truth now, as we begin another presidential campaign, could help undermine whatever outrageous slanders will be manufactured and flung at our current Democratic candidate because it'll call people's attention to the fact that the thugs did it in 2004 and are trying to do it again.

We'll never get anywhere "moving on." Fight the bastards, dammit.

Aint it ironic Pickens and his blowhard buddies attack the service of Kerry and crew to the benefit of a draft dodger who deserted a champagne unit. Just goes to show, even the a**holes are bigger in Texas.

Pickens always knew the allegations were a lie. He just wanted to smear Kerry. It worked. The far right bends lies into smears that ruin people's lives and then the far right simply goes on its way. There is no reparations or accountablility. It is what they do.

Kerry chose not to run on his record of over 20 years in the Senate because he had nothing of substance to show. Instead, he choose to run on his 9 months served in the Navy in Vietnam. The vast majority of the officers who served with Kerry formed the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth because they knew that Kerry was not qualified to be President based on those nine months. Those officers felt so strongly about his lack of qualifications that they believed that they had to speak out.. Even if some minor details of the allegations against Kerry cannot be proved after all this time, that doesn't change those facts.

What a piece of crock! I don't care if Kerry served a week on a swift boat. What a swift did in Viet Nam was what some people call heroic and I call crazy but he did serve and is entitled be called a hero because of it regardless if he came back and told the public that the war was needless and stupid. It was. He was right. He is still right about that. Lying about him does not change the basic truth of it that the war was as needless and asinine as the war for oil in Iraq is today.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:57 PM on 06/20/2008

Wow! The way you folks talk, it sounds like Kerry is just about ready to be made a Saint. But the fact remains that he attempted to use his 9 month service record as justification for his presidential ambitions and the vast majority of officers who served with him did not believe he was fit for that role. You can whine all you want about Pickens and Bush and Iraq but nothing changes those facts. As far as Kerry's opposition to that war, the fact is that he gave comfort to the enemy. And Kerry's lies were lies in the classic sense, saying things that he knew at the time were not true.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:19 AM on 06/21/2008

Serving a week on a swift boat does not qualify a person to be president. The officers who served with Kerry did not agree with him that his 9 months of service in the Navy qualified him to be president and they spoke out as is their right. Having a certain set of medals, even if the awards are completely legitimate, or even being held as a prisioner of war does not quality a person to be president. I'm sure that a lot of folks held their nose and voted for Kerry because they did not like Bush but that is really irrelevant to this discussion.

It wasn't because "they knew Kerry was not qualified." It was because they drank the Bush kool-aid about this ill-conceived US invasion/occupation of Iraq (which I'm sure you think is just swell!). The SBVT will go down in history for their ugly partisan tactics that folks are so sick of! If you question John Kerry's service, you'd have to question all those on the boat with him and the generals who awarded him his medals! Were you there????!!!

Even Chuck Hagel and 14 other Senate Republicans are not endorsing McCain. Oodles of Republicans are also sick of Bush and McSame -- over 80% of Americans think we're on the wrong track. People want a change from folks just like you!

I'm not a lawyer, but it would seem that Kerry's men would have a valid slander case against the swiftboaters and TBoone for those ads that also called into question their service and integrity. Kerry, as a public figure might have a tougher time, but these were coldly calculated lies, not just suggestions of wrong doing.

I would love to see some legal action taken against these liars. If for no other reason than as a warning for future attempts.

Kerry and his Vets are trying to protect poor little Obama but where were they when Pickens and his goons were concentrating on Clinton? Could it be that Kerry was helping to destroy the Clintons just like Axelrod and Obama's handlers were?
Obama's candidacy is no more legitimate than George W. Bush's Presidency or O.J. Simpson's "Not Guilty" verdict. They were obtained by intimidation of the public.

Interesting theory, I wonder what intimidation tactics were used on the 75,000 who turned out in the Pacific Northwest, or the 20,000 that showed up in Detroit. It'd be nice to find out what they used.

BTW, Kerry and his Vets are standing up for the TRUTH, and from the sound of your post, I've no doubt this is a concept somewhat foreign to you.

Barack Obama can take care of himself quite well. Nice of you to care.

Holy crap. This article is about legitimate Vietnam veterans doing everything they can to debunk liars and lies affecting them, and your question is why they weren't working to protect Hillary? Grow up already.

Hillary is (still) one of the most skilled politicians of our time. Perhaps of all time. If T. Boone needed or needs some additional ass-whuppin', I'm guessing Hillary never would expect people from another campaign to carry the fight. And, of greater current importance, like every politician she complains, cajoles - maybe even manipulates . . . but she doesn't whine.

In the unlikely event that you really are - were - a Democrat and Clinton supporter: Elections are contests. Somebody wins, somebody loses. Supporting one person over another is not equivalent to trying "to destroy" the eventual loser. Your characterizations of Obama and his candidacy expose your own low regard for Hillary Clinton. Imagine how badly beaten she would have been at the hands of a big, strong, legitimate manly-man candidate.

I am a Viet-Nam veteran and I just wondered why these brave men are now standing up to T. Boone Pickens four years later to protect Obama when they allowed him to bash another Presidential candidate for the whole four years. This is what I am referring to.

Stop Her Now is a political action committee organized by Republican political operative Arthur J. Finkelstein with the stated goal of stopping Hillary Clinton's presidential ambitions by defeating her in the 2006 New York State Senate race. Hillary Clinton eventually achieved her Senate re-election by a 36 percentage point margin.
After the 2006 election, it was rumored the PAC would change tactics in order to focus on Clinton's presidential ambitions instead, and it was relaunched in November of the same year.
The major donors (62%) to this PAC are energy trader T. Boone Pickens, who funded the Swift Boat campaign in 2004 against John Kerry as well as the Progress for America Voter Fund PAC and the Straight Talk America PAC, with homebuilder Bob Perry, investor Harold Clark Simmons, and Richard Collins, a Dallas County, Texas newspaper publisher; totaling over $10 million. Since 1978, Pickens has funneled over $5.5 Million into various PACs.

Clinton stood backstage looking over her remarks, figuring out where to insert anecdotes about the kids. “She couldn’t stop talking about what she had seen,” Susan Axelrod recalled. Later, at Hillary Clinton’s behest, the National Institutes of Health convened a conference on finding a cure for epilepsy. Here is the truth about T. Boone Pickens and the Swiftboaters and what they have been up to in the past years since they destroyed Kerry's chance for the Presidency.
Didn't some of you people help them succeed?
Stop Her Now is a political action committee organized by Republican political operative Arthur J. Finkelstein with the stated goal of stopping Hillary Clinton's presidential ambitions by defeating her in the 2006 New York State Senate race. Their main tool is their web page.
However, the web site garnered little money.[1] Senator Clinton's campaign crushed Jeanine Pirro in the opinion polls leading up to the 2006 senatorial race, by margins of more than 2:1, and the State Republican Party abandoned its attempt to unseat her. Hillary Clinton eventually achieved her Senate re-election by a 36 percentage point margin.
