MoveOn To Close Its 527 In Response To Obama's Candidacy

MoveOn, the advocacy group supporting Barack Obama, has decided to permanently shutter its 527 operation, partly in response to the Illinois Senator's insistence that such groups should not spend on his behalf during the general election, I've learned from the group's spokesperson.

MoveOn's decision, which will dramatically impact the way it raises money on Obama's behalf, is yet another sign of how rapidly Obama is taking control of the apparatus that's gearing up on his behalf.

By shuttering its 527, MoveOn is effectively killing its ability to raise money in huge chunks from labor unions, foundations, and big donors who would give over $5,000. The decision doesn't mean MoveOn will stop spending on Obama's behalf. Istead it will raise money exclusively with its political action committee, whose average donation is below $50 and will even be raising money with things like bake sales starting this weekend.

I notice the crowd of posters who say Obama isn't delivering the change he promises are absent from the comments to this post.

Time will tell whether it's a good strategic move. But as a real demonstration of Obama's committment to integrity and decency in the electoral process, it's undeniably powerful.

You nay-sayers are dead wrong. All the information about the Obama campaign will come from the Obama campaign. Barack Obama will take complete responsibility for all information diseminated on his behalf. This will completely destroy the credibility of all information diseminated in support of McCain even when it comes from his campaign.

Mccain will no longer be able to hide behind the 527 because Obama is not. When Obama says McCain must take responsibility for the 527's it will have teeth and McCain will be shown to be the hypocrit he is.

Obama has strength and integrity, he does the right thing because it is the right thing and the American people will sense this and respond.

When will Obama learn that the rethugs will not play by the rules of mutual gentlemanly courtesy? I think this is a mistake. And when all the slime and slander that the rethug 527's will use against him in battleground states how will he effectively counter it? The mainstream news is essentially an extension of the rethug party evidenced by their silence on Kucinich's impeachment proceedings and continued support in the news for McSame. The older voting population depends on the mainstream news and not the internet to get their political news. Since they are sycophants for mcSame it will not be balanced. We need the 527's to counter the rethug slime!

For all the censorship on this site, it's amazing they make as many spelling and grammar mistakes as they do on this site. Next time they close for maintainence they should hire someone who can spell AND knows the difference between words that sound alike but are not the same.

This changes MoveOn's shape, but in no way does it lessen its impact. If 527 vehicles are the synthetic chemicals poisoning and polluting America's political ecosystem, then MoveOn's elimination of their own is like going organic.
Serious kudos go out to Eli and the gang . . . this makes me an even bigger fan of MoveOn, and I look forward to helping them help Barack Obama make an even greater impact on our future.

They don't teach spelling anymore in school...I was told and I quote "It stifles creativity if you correct spelling". I told the teacher I wanted her to do it anyway...my little darling would be okay with it. I was then told "I will get in trouble from the administration if I do". The administration said children do not need to learn spelling because there is Spell Check on the computer. Arrgh!!!

I'm glad to say that where I come from Spelling is still taught in school as an independent subject. In fact it was always my favourite subject.

Also nothing irks me more than to see people write "would of" instead of "would have". Ugh!
