WASHINGTON — Former Sens. John Edwards and Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, a congresswoman said Thursday, one day after she met with the team Obama has reviewing possible candidates.

Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, said members of her caucus asked her to forward the names of Edwards and Nunn when she met Wednesday with Obama's vice presidential search team. The team, Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, indicated the two were on the list.

"We've been brainstorming in the Congressional Black Caucus. Former Senator Sam Nunn's name has come up, as well as John Edwards' name has come up among our CBC members. I reported that to them and they had both of those names on their list," Kilpatrick said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Kilpatrick said she made several suggestions during the 45-minute meeting, including former Vice President Al Gore, Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. Gore endorsed Obama on Monday.

"I asked them what type of person the senator is looking for? And they said in general someone who could help him rebuild the country ... talking about change. How we reinvest in America, get people back to work and reinforce our education system and bring the jobs back," she said.

She declined to say which names were put forth by Kennedy and Holder. The prominent Democratic attorneys have been meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to receive feedback on Obama's potential running mate. Obama has said he won't discuss the process until he's made his choice.

When Kilpatrick said Gore was her personal choice, "they had a smile on their face. They have a list of candidates. I think I may have been the first to do that. They didn't say one way or the other."

But she wasn't the only one to mention Gore.

Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, met Wednesday with Kennedy and Holder. A former Clinton supporter, he offered Clinton's name but said he mentioned others, too. Those included Edwards, Sens. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, Gore, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

"These are all good names," Baca said. "Ultimately the decision will be up to Obama."

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who was John Kerry's running mate in 2004, could help Obama appeal to white, working-class voters who largely favored Clinton in the primary and will be a critical voting bloc in the general election. The drawback is that Edwards was the vice presidential nominee on a losing ticket four years ago, while Obama's campaign is about turning the page.

Edwards has said he is not seeking the vice presidency _ but hasn't ruled out accepting if asked.

"I'd take anything he asked me to think about seriously, but obviously this is something I've done and it's not a job that I'm seeking," Edwards said last Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Nunn would bring national security credentials to the ticket, having served as the longtime Armed Services Committee chairman. The former Georgia senator is a member of Obama's foreign policy advisory group.

But Nunn has not been in office for more than a decade so he is not well-known nationally. He is a conservative Democrat who supported school prayer and opposed gays in the military, while Obama tends to have a more liberal viewpoint. Nunn will turn 70 in September.

Other lawmakers who have been briefed say there about 20 names on the list Obama's team has been discussing. The list includes current elected officials, former elected officials and retired military generals, lawmakers have said.

Kilpatrick said most of the names she was asked about were in the Senate.

I still remember Sam Nunn as a Democrat who helped kneecap Bill Clinton while the Dems still had control of Congress. Why such a person would be considered by Obama is beyond me. I just got to vote against Nunn as a director for Dell. Like cockroaches, these guys keep coming back.

Agreed! No Nunn. He's too conservative, he's boring he would do for Obama what Lloyd Bentsen did for Michael Dukakis. (In other words, nothing, except for his one good slam on Quayle.)

Obama needs to pick a running mate who reinforces his message of change.

Congressman Barney Frank reported in Politico:

"Frank argues that adding Nunn to the Democratic ticket would cost Obama support in the gay community and would make it impossible for the Massachusetts Congressman to be a strong advocate for the Democratic Presidential nominee.

'I would be virtually useless in trying to convince other gays and lesbians to support the ticket,' said Frank."

---------------

This essentially sinks Nunn's chances for VP and it should. Obama doesn't need the controversy.

If he needs someone with southern appeal and/or defense credentials, there are too many alternative picks who aren't responsible for casting the deciding vote against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and for being the biggest cheerleader for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Why pick someone automatically controversial? Pick someone that excites everyone! (or at least offends no one).

No VP over the age of 60.

Call it ageism, but the fact is, that at 60, your body and mind are slowing down. Not to mention the matter of extremely inflexible opinions and a more negative attitude towards change.
I speak from some experience, here. Anyone who knows or lives with someone 60 or older will agree...

It's not to say that the older nominees would not be able to adapt, just that a younger candidate would do so more readily. And, in today's technological world, flexibility and adaptability is a very important consideration...

Heck, McCain can't even work a PC without help...

Agreed! I'm 61 and know that I was far more dynamic and plenty wise at 45 or 50.

I like Edwards because populism is the best cure for the cancer of corporatism.

I like Edwards and his populism but the problem is, I think, that people see him as a hedge fund and PI attorney making big bucks and spending $400 for a haircut (vanity could also be a detriment here). Can someonen who has expenses like that really relate to working class people?

OK, I won't call it ageism. I'll call it what is: INCREDIBLY stupid.

Thanks for proving that no matter what your age, you can still not be grown up.

It's not about smarts. There is physiological evidence suggesting psychological inflexibility in those of a certain age, though it's going to vary from person to person. That's not a good reason to keep them off a ticket though, I don't know what this guy is going on about.

My dream happened when I saw John Edwards endorse Barack a few months ago. I saw them together and I said, "YES!!!!!" They would be so dynamic and so telegenic that the media will fall all over themselves to get at 'em. I think John would really have the platform he needs to work for the poor and disadvantaged, he would help with the White Middle Class vote and the Southern Good ole boy votes as well as make a great partner for Barack. I say YES!!!

I agree. He also had the best health care plan of the top three candidates, which would also be a better transition to single-payer health care than Obama's non-universal approach.

Edwards is a puss*. He could'nt even carry his own state in 2004. Cheney ate him for lunch in the debate, and then spit him out. No, no, no.

First of all, he said he doesn't want it, second, he endorsed him after the fact. Nice going John! Real courage on your part.

Agreed. I find it amazing how so many Dems forget how Edwards was embarrassed by Cheney. It's ok to admit it people. It doesn't mean you're siding with Cheney or that you like him better. What it means is that if you want to beat someone like Cheney you need to be realistic about what kind of candidate you'll need to accomplish what you want to do.

And, Edwards is not that candidate. Biden is.

Obama/Biden

That was an attempt at Democratic a-partisanship. He doesn't want to look like an Obama man, but like a Democrat. And that's absolutely perfect staging for a VP spot if you want to get the democrats circling their wagons.

Polls split over Edwards/Cheney, and Al Freaking Gore couldn't carry his own state in 2000 from the TOP of the ticket. You're wrong about Edwards, but luckily your charming personality makes up for it.

I remember Tim Russert said when he was ask about the VP for Obama said he got a piece of paper and he wrote the name of Al Gore three times. And I think it was KO that asked him would that be legal? And he said he would have to look it up and see, but now people are talking about it more and more. I’m starting to believe it this could be the ticket. I don’t think Gore would want it but I think he would accept the offer if asked because he knows what’s a stake. But if it happens it will be Tim Russert who started the buzz. RIP Tim you will be missed.

I hate to be a drama queen, but if Nunn's the VP candidate, I'm staying at home. The Democrats don't need another curmudgeon (a la Joe Lieberman in 2004) on the national ticket. Also, Nunn has not shown to have redeemed himself from his blatant homophobic past.

Keep Sam Nunn as far away as possible. He has been out of the picture for 14 years and a lot has changed. He tried to gain power of new president Bill Clinton and is a back stabbing SOB. He is also not "new". He is the worst of old washington. Who has been pushing this out of touch piece of crap? Would be curious to know how this crypt keeper is being promoted by press, ??? to BO.

Nunn is old, very old and very old Washington. Putting him on the ticket will make Obama look like a child. Wesley Clark is the better choice for any security/military bona fides that BO needs.

If Nunn is the nominee I will not be able to vote for Obama and there may be many people who won't fo Obama either.

Not Edwards, for sure.

Edwards was my first choice for President. If I can't have him in the top spot, I want him has Attorney General.

Given Edwards' experience as a successful trial attorney, I can't think of anyone better to clean up the mess Bush and his cronies made of the Justice system.

obama needs a vice president that has something obama doesnt have. testicular fortitude.

and nunn...well i just dont like his last name. obama-nunn 08 just doesnt go well.

Obama and Edwards would be a dynamic duo - BATMAN AND ROBIN. Two healthy, articulate, and attractive candidates - I am sure this could be a winning ticket. However, I am under the impression that Obama needs a military man at his side to balance McCain's only projected strength - foreign policy / war hero. Senator Obama may need someone like General Wesley Clark or possibly Senator Jim Webb at his side - both military leaders with real credentials. They both appear to be tried and proven as political candidates. This may be just what Senator Obama needs to destroy the Republican Corporate Theocracy / war machine.

I can't even believe Nunn is being considered. An old homophobe with strong ties to DADT. (I still remember him talking squeamishly about how tight military quarters and homos just can't mix . . ughh.) There are few things that would make me question voting for Obama at this point, but Nunn would definitely be one of them. (if Obama staffers read the blogs, they'll quickly see the, um, underwhelming enthusiasm for Nunn.) Clinton, Edwards, Wes Clark--those are people I could get behind.

Edwards couldn't carry his home state of North Carolina in '04, and Biden hasn't even come out and endorsed Obama yet, even though almost everyone else has. Nunn has problems (there are better choices) but he might deliver Georgia.

Noooo!

Edwards was a disaster in 2004! He let Cheney run rings around him in the debate. I know he didn't like Kerry, but that was no excuse for starting his 2008 run while being a VP. Everyone talks about how Hillary Clinton would challenge Obama if she were on the ticket, but it was Edwards who constantly tried to change Kerry's message, even his slogans. I don't think he's as good a lieutenant as some would think. Besides, he's run for president twice and has never shown he can get votes to match the hype.

I don't know much about Sam Nunn. But I can't imagine he would be as exciting as any of the Virginia Three, Clinton, or Wes Clark.

Frankly, I don't think Obama is anywhere near making up his mind, so I'm not surprised these two are being considered. But don't expect to hear their names in the envelope (I hope).
