WASHINGTON — Former Sens. John Edwards and Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, a congresswoman said Thursday, one day after she met with the team Obama has reviewing possible candidates.

Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, said members of her caucus asked her to forward the names of Edwards and Nunn when she met Wednesday with Obama's vice presidential search team. The team, Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, indicated the two were on the list.

"We've been brainstorming in the Congressional Black Caucus. Former Senator Sam Nunn's name has come up, as well as John Edwards' name has come up among our CBC members. I reported that to them and they had both of those names on their list," Kilpatrick said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Kilpatrick said she made several suggestions during the 45-minute meeting, including former Vice President Al Gore, Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. Gore endorsed Obama on Monday.

"I asked them what type of person the senator is looking for? And they said in general someone who could help him rebuild the country ... talking about change. How we reinvest in America, get people back to work and reinforce our education system and bring the jobs back," she said.

She declined to say which names were put forth by Kennedy and Holder. The prominent Democratic attorneys have been meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to receive feedback on Obama's potential running mate. Obama has said he won't discuss the process until he's made his choice.

When Kilpatrick said Gore was her personal choice, "they had a smile on their face. They have a list of candidates. I think I may have been the first to do that. They didn't say one way or the other."

But she wasn't the only one to mention Gore.

Story continues below

Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, met Wednesday with Kennedy and Holder. A former Clinton supporter, he offered Clinton's name but said he mentioned others, too. Those included Edwards, Sens. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, Gore, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

"These are all good names," Baca said. "Ultimately the decision will be up to Obama."

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who was John Kerry's running mate in 2004, could help Obama appeal to white, working-class voters who largely favored Clinton in the primary and will be a critical voting bloc in the general election. The drawback is that Edwards was the vice presidential nominee on a losing ticket four years ago, while Obama's campaign is about turning the page.

Edwards has said he is not seeking the vice presidency _ but hasn't ruled out accepting if asked.

"I'd take anything he asked me to think about seriously, but obviously this is something I've done and it's not a job that I'm seeking," Edwards said last Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Nunn would bring national security credentials to the ticket, having served as the longtime Armed Services Committee chairman. The former Georgia senator is a member of Obama's foreign policy advisory group.

But Nunn has not been in office for more than a decade so he is not well-known nationally. He is a conservative Democrat who supported school prayer and opposed gays in the military, while Obama tends to have a more liberal viewpoint. Nunn will turn 70 in September.

Other lawmakers who have been briefed say there about 20 names on the list Obama's team has been discussing. The list includes current elected officials, former elected officials and retired military generals, lawmakers have said.

Kilpatrick said most of the names she was asked about were in the Senate.

Today I am for Edwards. Just think of the unified power of Michele and Elizabeth, Barack and John.
Although, I as an "elitist think too much person" actually prefer Webb and his writers analysis, let's leave him in the Senate and give a job to a man without a job and talent enough to be president should something happen to our main man.

Any VP candidate must be pro-choice.

I think Rendell from PA would be a good choice.

I don't think a VP candidate has to be pro choice. It would only matter if something happened to the President, and with a vast majority in Congress and a Democratic appointed Supreme Court justices, there is no way Roe v. Wade would ever be overturned. And if he/she DID become the President, there is no way he/she would commit political suicide by pushing against his/her party on the issue.

It's a non issue.

Exactly, KarateKid. I agree with Susane07 that Rendell would be a good VP choice. At least, like one of the posters, I believe it "today." I like Wes Clark as VP equally as well, for the military aspect. Since Edwards already indicated he would like the position of AG, I think he should get it. Camelot, here we come!

You don't know what you are talking about. The person who appoints the Supreme Court justices must be a solid supporter of abortion rights. Congress is not enough -- just look at how many Dems had to vote in favor of Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito.

Sam Nunn did indeed make himself an unimpeachable expert on Defense matters, but to call him a "war horse" is a bit much. In endorsing Obama, Nunn said:

That would be SIGNIFICANT change from the current nest of rats.

My opinion is that it shouldn't matter which states the VP could deliver. The quality of a VP is the most important. If things stay the way they are, Obama will get POTUS, regardless of VP choice and its effect on the electoral college map.

I'd like to add my VP preference, in this order:

Gore
Edwards
Biden
Richardson
Schweitzer
Webb
Sibelius
Clark
Schweitzer

Picking a VP based on the 'fact' they can deliver ONE STATE(?) is rediculous in my humble opinion.

Whether or not they can deliver a state should only be iceing. This needs to be the ticket for change.

So you wanna vote McCain, huh?

Even though he voted to impeach Bill Clinton - your candidate's husband?

Even though he has a long record of being against a woman's right to choose?

Even through Hillary has given her support to Obama and asks that her supporters do the same?

Even though he is committed to staying in Iraq as long as he believes it necessary?

Even though he supports the use of torture against our enemies?

Even though he would deny the best of benefits to our returning service men and women?

Even though, while we face multiple economic woes, he admits he knows little about the economy?

I just cannot understand it............why would you vote for McCain? Why would you do this to our country?

Nunn and Edwards - bad choice. The "southern" strategy is a total mistake.

It need to be a thematic choice that coincidence with
change,
vision,
"not Washington",
not the same old same old.

Jerry Brown, Kathleen Sebelius, even Bloomberg.

Let's start thinking more about Brown.

Catholic, governor, mayor, CA attorney general. Saw the Environment as an issue decades ahead of everyone. Saw how technology could be transforming decades ahead of everyone. Saw the corrupting influence of money and special interests on Democratic Party while head of CA Dem. Party and quite. Speaks Spanish. Worked with Mother Theresa. Can be a tough attack dog, while Obama stays above the fray.

For those that think he too liberal recall that he also ran for President on Balanced Budget Amendment and Tax reform and simplification.

Obama's themes are vision, forward looking change, not the same old same old. This is what the VP needs to be about not some lame and ill-founded "southern" strategy.

I am encouraged to hear that John Edwards is still being considered. I think he is the best person for the job even though he might prefer to be attorney general. He had stated a couple of times that he would not accept but more recently he said that he would consider it. I would most have Edwards be president should anything happen to Senator Obama. I think they would make an awesome team for change and that they would govern well together. I hope that he will accept if asked.

Edwards wants to be Attorney General and democrats typically don't vote for the same guy twice when he lost once already.

Richardson wants Secretary of State.

Sam Nunn, please.... Barack is already tied in Georgia without him.

Strickland is a big bore

Rendell is backing Biden

Kathleen would be great, but there is fear of a "why not Hilary" backlash

Hilary will never be the nominee. Her manadate of a forced health care plan would force billions in to the same health care and right wing forces that defeated her 90's health care plan. Also Obama is committed to getting lobbyist out of Washington. Hilary never met a lobbyist she didn't take money from. I assure you that I would love a woman as president, but our country is controlled by corporate money and time is running out.

Joe Biden is the VP, sorry kids. His partition plan in Iraq, his Pakistan and Afghanistan knowledge and his ability to speak clearly and directly to people gives Obama a way to fight his detractors while keeping his composure. Plus everyone like Biden. They say a good 30% of republicans on the fence would trust Obama with Biden behind him.
