WASHINGTON — Former Sens. John Edwards and Sam Nunn are on a list of potential running mates for Democrat Barack Obama, a congresswoman said Thursday, one day after she met with the team Obama has reviewing possible candidates.

Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, D-Mich., who leads the Congressional Black Caucus, said members of her caucus asked her to forward the names of Edwards and Nunn when she met Wednesday with Obama's vice presidential search team. The team, Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder, indicated the two were on the list.

"We've been brainstorming in the Congressional Black Caucus. Former Senator Sam Nunn's name has come up, as well as John Edwards' name has come up among our CBC members. I reported that to them and they had both of those names on their list," Kilpatrick said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Kilpatrick said she made several suggestions during the 45-minute meeting, including former Vice President Al Gore, Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha and Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. Gore endorsed Obama on Monday.

"I asked them what type of person the senator is looking for? And they said in general someone who could help him rebuild the country ... talking about change. How we reinvest in America, get people back to work and reinforce our education system and bring the jobs back," she said.

She declined to say which names were put forth by Kennedy and Holder. The prominent Democratic attorneys have been meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to receive feedback on Obama's potential running mate. Obama has said he won't discuss the process until he's made his choice.

When Kilpatrick said Gore was her personal choice, "they had a smile on their face. They have a list of candidates. I think I may have been the first to do that. They didn't say one way or the other."

But she wasn't the only one to mention Gore.

Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif., chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, met Wednesday with Kennedy and Holder. A former Clinton supporter, he offered Clinton's name but said he mentioned others, too. Those included Edwards, Sens. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, Gore, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

"These are all good names," Baca said. "Ultimately the decision will be up to Obama."

Edwards, a former North Carolina senator who was John Kerry's running mate in 2004, could help Obama appeal to white, working-class voters who largely favored Clinton in the primary and will be a critical voting bloc in the general election. The drawback is that Edwards was the vice presidential nominee on a losing ticket four years ago, while Obama's campaign is about turning the page.

Edwards has said he is not seeking the vice presidency _ but hasn't ruled out accepting if asked.

"I'd take anything he asked me to think about seriously, but obviously this is something I've done and it's not a job that I'm seeking," Edwards said last Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Nunn would bring national security credentials to the ticket, having served as the longtime Armed Services Committee chairman. The former Georgia senator is a member of Obama's foreign policy advisory group.

But Nunn has not been in office for more than a decade so he is not well-known nationally. He is a conservative Democrat who supported school prayer and opposed gays in the military, while Obama tends to have a more liberal viewpoint. Nunn will turn 70 in September.

Other lawmakers who have been briefed say there about 20 names on the list Obama's team has been discussing. The list includes current elected officials, former elected officials and retired military generals, lawmakers have said.

Kilpatrick said most of the names she was asked about were in the Senate.

It was disconcerting enough to observe that Sam Nunn, the ancient right-winger masquerading as a conservative Democrat, was assembled with the otherwise august members of Senator Obama's national security committee, let alone be considered for vice presidential running mate. While some say that Nunn has done some good work since leaving public office over a decade ago in the area of destroying old nuclear weaponry, it would be best if he left his destructive tendencies to bombs and such.

Obama will lose the gay vote if he chooses Homphobic Sam Nunn as his running mate.

I have supporte Obama since the beginning but I seriously can't vote for anyone who has Sam Nunn on the ticket.

"I asked them what type of person the senator is looking for? And they said in general someone who could help him rebuild the country ... talking about change. How we reinvest in America, get people back to work and reinforce our education system and bring the jobs back," she said.

The most important part of this post. The rest we know already.

Nunn was the most conspicuous Democrat who undermined Pres. Clinton on his position to allow gays to serve openly in the military. His anti-gay rants and fear-mongering were displayed prominently by the media and broadcast across the nation. Nunn didn't even agree with the compromise "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

If Obama picks him, he's going to have to deal with a lot of angry gay voters.

What a laugh. Yeah, they'll be angry, but what are they going to do, vote for McCain, after what he said on Ellen Degeneres' show? The hard line Clintonistas and gays for McCain.....that would be the equivalent of Dumb and Dumber.

Wesley Clark would be perfect

Wes Clark would be good. Jim Webb would be better. Neither Edwards nor Nunn will invite many people to take a second look, which is what is needed to bolster the "change" appeal of Obama. Webb stuck up for veterans; was good enough for Ronald Reagan; and pretty much told Bush - to his face - to F Off (a paraphrase) when Bush tried to get a little cheeky about Webb's Marine Corps son serving in Iraq. And, Webb was a Marine Officer in Viet Nam. Edwards was my first pick and I was sorry to see him drop out but unfortunately he has jumped the shark as VP material when compared to Webb (or Clark - his bio is extraordinary as well). Edwards as attorney general would give this nation a chance at accountability that is sorely lacking.

Edwards as A.G. He will follow the money with Henry Waxman's help. No old man either. He wants someone who believes in his vision and can help him rebuild the country and keep it moving in that direction after his 2 terms. I think it will be one of the military guys. Maybe Wes Clark, but will he continue the work after Obama is gone? Bill Richardson is good too, but need him as Secretary of State. Is that Defense Secretary Bill Gates a solid Republican? If not, he may work or leave him at Defense. I don't know, I was going with Kathleen, but Hill's women would be upset. I'm gonna keep looking. LOL

Hey quit wasting our time with these VP predictions. When Senator Obama makes a selection we will know. All this does is stir the pot making some group upset.

Perhaps, this is just a diversionary story, to keep attention away from the real choices. Let's hope so, in any case, although I thought Obama and Edwards looked good together in their joint appearances. If he choses Nunn, you can forget all of the rhetoric about change.

Cong. Cheeks Kilpatrick is the mother of the mayor of Detroit. She had said that the mess he was in (by mess I mean felonies) didn't preclude a continued political career. She is an idiot.
Sam Nunn is:
too old
too conservative
too passed-over

too homophobic

sorry, but he is. he totally opposed equal rights in the military, he spearheaded all the opposition to it and then forced BC into don't ask don't tell.

no thanks.

Agreed. Way too homophobic. And, Obama still has people suspicious over McClurkin.

If he picks Nunn, it will confirm my worst fears about Obama.

I'd never vote for McCain, but a Nunn VP selection might push me into voting for Cynthia McKinney. I wouldn't vote for Joe Lieberman as VP in 2000 either.

Edwards, however, would excite me. It would show that Obama takes economic populism seriously.

She's my top choice. But she has no foreign policy experience and both the media and Hillary supporters will say Obama picked her just to court women who voted for Hillary. I would be thrilled if he picked Sebelius because she reinforces all his good points and is a perfect example of the kind of governing that he's been talking about. But Sebelius probably won't get it thanks to Hillary. Hillary will do everything she can to prevent another woman from becoming VP and potentially President.

There will be no Nunn, Gore or Edwards as VP. Obama will make a bold choice, one that is in keeping with his message of change. Everyone assumes he needs national security cred, I think he is kicking McCains ass on that topic.

Oh this is good, John Edwards who was a disaster last time, this is a guy who couldn't win his
own home state. This is a guy who could not win a second term in the Senate. Great Choice!
