Barack Obama Seal

The New York Times reports that Barack Obama, during a meeting with Democratic governors in Chicago, sat behind a previously unseen and very official-looking seal bearing his name. Featuring an eagle clutching an olive branch, the seal resembles that of the President of the United States. Above the eagle's head is the phrase, "Vero Possumus," which the Times translates as being roughly equivalent to "Yes We Can."

Remember what happened to 'Big Brown', the 'Triple Crown winner'. I think they had a seal already made up for him too.

I am a supporter and his campaign usually makes good decisions, this wasn't one of them. The guy who came up with this idea needs to be fired.

Whoever is responsible for the use of this seal and the announcement of Patty Solis Doyle coming on as VP chief of staff should be seriously ignored when they offer other suggestions. The seal is an ego symbol that plays right into the hands of GOP attacks. Also, the announcement of Solis-Doyle joining the campaign was fine, but the position of VP chief of staff should have been held back until the announcement of VP. The position announcement fueled the media pundits with fire to further divide and anger the Clinton supporters and surrogates. Foolish mistakes, just like at the NH debate when every women viewed Obama and Edwards, as the male patriachal system attacking the woman (Clinton) with the added cynical remark from Obama, "your likable enough". Foolish mistakes can cause major perception problems and impact a candidates support!!!

I agree 100% with your post.

Contrary to popular belief, the Obama Campaign was not that well run. When you have a candidate with amazing charisma and a broad appeal it can transcend the screw ups.

Axelrod runs the Obama Campaign in a ham handed Chicago style that is not going to play nationally. The rookie mistakes will get magnified and the "Is Obama Ready for the Big Time?" articles will follow.

The Teflon from being the NEW new thing is rapidly wearing off the Senator. His prickly, elitist condescending demeanor shows more and more.

'prickly, elitist condescending demeanor' ------ With all due respect, I do believe this phrase is a pretty fair representation of the attitude displayed in your comment.

I love Obama, but this seal was a bad idea.

Get rid of it, move on.

The eagle's other talons are grasping arrows. We've had a president who used against us our fascination with image for 8 years. I don't give a damn what his seal looks like: he's supporting FISA. What's next: ensuring that habeas corpus never returns? I'm disillusioned. If he doesn't safeguard our rights and the rule of law, I don't care how articulate he is, how soaring his rhetoric.

Phidippides, FISA is a GOOD thing, court approval and review before domestic spying is allowed.

Expanded wiretapping isn't, but at least FISA can put the brakes on.

As far as BO's position he's said "that the Bush Administration, with the cooperation of major telecommunications companies, "has abused [its] authority and undermined the Constitution by intercepting the communications of innocent Americans without their knowledge or the required court orders."

And so he's going to try to strip the immunity provisions from the Bill.

Not perfect, but nowhere similar to BushCo.

Or something designed for an SNL skit.

Not as bad as McCain using slogans from antidepressant ads and stealing Obama's phrases.

But bad, nonetheless.

Fortunately this is an error of presentation and not of substance.

I support Obama, but this new seal is pretentious, manipulating and obvious. This is a clear visual training prop so people will associate Obama with the Presidential Seal.

If McCain did this, how would people react?

Thank you Captain Obvious. Got any other astounding insights. "This is a clear visual training prop so people will associate Obama with the Presidential Seal." Looks like it worked huh? Doesnt matter what the conversation is as long as there is a conversation he has achieved the goal.

DavieB36,

Yes, it's an obvious ploy by Obama and that was my point.

Why don't you write a coherent sentence yourself before you criticize others?

If that's the intent it's a failure.

I've seen GWB against a backdrop of the presidential seal dozens of times and it did not make him look one bit more presidential to me.

My take on the seal is to kind of get America use to seeing him and his name for that matter in a presidential way. I love it.

He isn't president yet. If that's how it comes off, it's inappropriate.

OMG.

How dumb.

How politically tone deaf.

I see the fingerprints of that mediocre talent, Axlerod, all over this. All this does is give those working class whites another reason not to vote for him - "See?! The F-ing guy thinks he's ALREADY President! Well screw that!".

I see NOTHING wrong with the seal its just a seal of the office that he is running for. If people are bothered by this I chalk it up to more nonsense and silliness of the American people just like that flag pin stuff. Stuff in our lives must be so bad and out of our control that we gravitate towards the silly. Its funny we dont believe in symbols but yet we are uspet when someone doesnt wear one or the use it in this manner. The economy is in chaos the war in Iraq is revealing someo atrocities committed by our soldiers that frankly I find sickening and we are obsessing over the appropriateness of a logo.

My advice to Obama keep it I like it. Its different and BOLD.

Carol

I can see Mel Brooks behind a Seal like that. I don't know why, but that's where my mind goes, and it cracks me up. I guess I'd just rather laugh.
