Hugh Hefner

HUGH Hefner has gleefully enjoyed a sexually liberated life, but few know it all started with a little erotic dabbling within the Playboy czar's own family.

In his upcoming book, "Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream," Steven Watts writes how after Hefner wed his first wife, Millie, in 1949, he enlisted his friend Eldon Sellers, who would later help him co-found Playboy, into a staging a foursome.

The book relates: "One night after [Hugh] and Millie watched a stag film with Janie and Eldon Sellers, he suggested that the four of them make love on the same bed, each husband to his own wife. They did and in Sellers' words, 'It was different and exciting.' According to Millie, Hugh began to hint at switching partners, apparently suggesting it with the Sellerses, although the swap never materialized."

Hef then went further, trying a foursome out on his own family. "It did happen with his brother, Keith, and his wife, Rae, one evening," Watts writes. "[But] while Millie ultimately backed out of having sex with Keith, Hugh slept with his sister-in-law."

The book also claims Hef once tried a gay tryst. "Hefner's thirst for sexual experience became so strong that he even had a one-time homosexual experience," Watts writes. "One evening in downtown Chicago he was propositioned and, according to Sellers, he 'thought, what the hell. Found it an interesting experience. As far as I know, the guy just gave him [oral sex].' "

Product Description
When Hugh Hefner quit his job at Esquire to start a magazine called Playboy, he didn't just want to make money. He wanted to make dreams come true. The first issue of Playboy had a Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, an article on the Dorsey brothers, and a feature on desk design for the modern office, called "Gentlemen, Be Seated." Hefner wrote much of the copy himself and drew all the cartoons. But the most memorable part by far was the set of pictures he bought from a local calendar printer of a scantily clad Marilyn Monroe.

In this wise and penetrating biography, intellectual historian Steven Watts looks at what Hugh Hefner went onto become, and how he took America with him. Hefner became one of the most hated and envied celebrities in America, dating a long list of his magazine's beauties and always standing just barely on the wrong side of decency and moral uprightness. He also, at one time, had 7 million subscribers to his magazine. Though in time he would lose readers to more explicit magazines on one side and "lad" magazines on the other, the Playboy brand never lost its luster.

What is interesting about this, from an anthropological view, is that people find it interesting. Human nature, I guess. I will think of HH though as someone who made it socially acceptable to treat women as objects and toys at a time when we as a culture were just getting over all that. Not much of a contribution. Now that huge numbers of men seem to need Viagra at an early age it makes you wonder what this has all been about. Back to my Jane Austen........

No one needs a 500cc motorcycle. No one needs a Porsche. No one needs a Red Bull and Vodka. And few at this age need Viagra.

Those who deplore Mr. Hefner fail to appreciate his contributions to cultural freedom.

avraamjack, are you trying to suggest that Hef was part of the rejection of "straight" society in the later '60s? I can tell you that he was not. If anything he was viewed as a sleazy creep who contributed nothing to the changes, but was a major player in keeping women "in their place". And those women played right into it. Happily (and for MONEY) exposing themselves in a stupid magazine that glorified the "HIGH LIFE" of Money, Women, and Acquisition of the status symbols of society, while perpetuating the status of women as mere s*x objects. Hef was hardly thought of a countercounter hero, except perhaps to his mainstream male audience with regard to s*x . He may have been, and seems to remain for a certain subset of males, a Giant Among Men for his money and women.

Gypsy508 mentioned the journalism aspect of the magazine. Obviously, there had to be some "redeeming" quality so it just wasn't a skin magazine. Plus it gave some men the ability to say, "Gee, honey, I really just like it for the articles."

He was and still is a strong supporter of marijuana legalization.
.
The sixties, the "free love" sixties, Hef had no inluence upon this?
.
If you read some of the articles I think you would see the fallacy of your belief.
.
I can understand that you might feel that he was demeaning women but it seems to me he treats them well and forces nothing upon anyone. He helped free them from the bondage of obsolete expectations.
.
Have not many women been helped by appearing in Playboy?
.
Perhaps you would feel better if a woman started a ladies magazine that featured men unclothed and then kept a few around the house as boy toys well into her eighties and beyond? This would work commercially.

"And those women played right into it."

Nothing like not giving "those women" a little credit for seeing how they could use their God-given gifts to their advange.

Gimme a break!

Since I was an adolescent, I always saw Hef as a shameless and clueless greed-head. His magazine was (and still is, I think) filled with beautiful things and women that "normal" men could NEVER have. I think that history will judge him as a self-serving capitalist who was great at market research. Granted, he did (or at least paid for) some good work defending the first amendment, but that, of course, was self-serving as well, since having your magazine banned cuts into the bottom line.

He had disgusted me since I first knew of Playboy in the early '60s while in grade school. My best friend's father (our dentist) had a stash of the mags and we, two little girls, found them and wondered if this was what we were expected to do as adults.... be naked for men to ogle. We weren't old enough to understand why some of the pages were stuck together.

Hef is a disgusting old reprobate who became wealthy on the backs (or mostly fronts) of women. I'm not a conservative prig, but he has played a huge role in the cheapening of women and the lowering of societal standards. And I don't care if his daughter is carrying on the family tradition.

Seeing that elderly person in his pajamas with a drink in one hand while copping a feel with the other makes me want to puke.

Any man who idolizes that old degenerate as "THE MAN!!!" is obviously no one I'd ever want in my life. And certainly I'm not the type they'd want in their lives so everybody's happy.

So, you're in your sixties now and blame Hugh Heffner for being bitter about no one wanting you in your life? That's truly sad. Exactly the circumstances under which you were introduced to the naked body is something Heffner rebelled against. From a changing society point of view Heffner certainly played a role in how women and men adapted to their new freedoms, but isn't it up to each of us to create our own reality and find a balance? Heffner is by far more innocent than Bush/Cheney when it comes to morality in my view. I certainly consider myself a feminist when it comes to equality in society and law, but it's also true that women who have "it" throughout time have disrobed for men to be immortalized in marble, granite, paint, film, and now pixels. We're talking about millions and millions of women, and I'm sure many came from the same prudish background as you. Apparently, not everyone thinks it's degenerate behavior to engage in nude cavorting between consenting adults. That we are all voyeurs when it comes to s*x is something Heffner cleverly exploited. In that respect many will argue he is the epitome of the American Dream. Just not yours.

Oh, boohoo, you've tried to put me down. I feel so chastised.

However, you are Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. I'm not in my 60s. I'm in my 50s and when people find out my age they are shocked, visible jaw drops, because I look like I'm in my 30s. Not a gray hair or a wrinkle. I have everything I want in my life. I'm hardly a prude. I've probably had more loves and lovers in my life than you could ever dream of. You have no idea what you're talking about and are making yourself look foolish.

Being against women as s*x objects whose favorite color is pink and ideal date is dinner at a fabulously expensive restaurant and then paying for it with s*x even if she's not excited by her date because she doesn't have enough self-esteem to say "NO THANKS" does not make me "bitter" or a "prude". I'm not the only one who has posted a similar opinion and yet you taunt ME.

And who brought up "nude cavorting"?! You're funny!!!! "Hey baby, let's pick up a copy of Playboy and go to my swinging bachelor pad and cavort in the nude. I'm such a wild and crazy guy."

Hef was a man of the 70s and the 70s are long gone. Well, except for the high unemployment, high gas prices and the inflation. The playboy philosophy that there should be no boundaries on sexual relations is gone, though. It was replaced by the realities of gonnorrhea, syphillis, genital herpes, AIDS...better to find one good partner and be loyal for life.

Wow. When did I become a conservative?? Oh wait...conservatives preach abstinence, then go to diaper hookers and solicit bjs from cops in the men's room. My bad. I'm still a lib, cool.

One also forgets the 70s were a time of good journalism. And Playboy was full of it then. Something that also has passed.

I can still remember his black and white TV show. Watching from my crib, of course.

Now look, Hugh Hefner can gloss-up his sexual obsession from now to kingdom come (good luck with that by the way , Hugh)...but...I bet in his quiet moments even he has some reservations. What kind of person spends his life 1) trying to satisfy his sexual drive (which has destroyed some of his deepest personal relationships) and then 2) constantly attempting to rationalize it? I would suggest a person who deep-down knows he is spiritually bankrupt.

He banged his brother's wife? Having sexual relations in the same room with your brother and then tapping his wife is beyond twisted. I dont' consider myself straight laced or conservative at all. But THAT is way across the line.
