SAN FRANCISCO — Hundreds of wildfires sparked by lightning flared Sunday across the heart of wine country and remote forests in Northern California, the latest batch of destructive blazes in the bone-dry state.

One had spread across nearly 6 square miles by early Sunday after starting the previous afternoon in Napa County and quickly moving into a mostly rural area of Solano County.

The fire threatened more than 100 buildings as it fed on grassy woodland about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento, said Roger Archey, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

It was 35 percent contained Sunday evening and had destroyed one home, officials said. Evacuations were ordered for some residents, said agency spokeswoman Nancy Carniglia.

Wildfires have destroyed more than 175 homes in Northern California so far this year. Blazes started popping up in the region just as California's unofficial fire season began in mid-May, following the state's driest two-month period on record.

Two small blazes about 25 miles south of San Jose forced several residents from their homes Sunday. Both were partially contained, and officials said most residents would be let back into their homes by Monday. Those fires were also blamed on lightning.

Thunderstorms were responsible for as many as 75 fires in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, about 160 miles north of Sacramento. They ranged in size from less than an acre to more than a square mile. None immediately threatened homes, said Forest Service spokesman Michael Odle.

Mendocino County had as many as 90 fires, charring nearly 8 square miles, Cal Fire officials said.

South of San Francisco, a fire that started Friday in Santa Cruz County and destroyed homes and closed a stretch of highway was contained after charring just less than a square mile. Evacuation orders were lifted Saturday, a day after roughly 2,000 people fled their homes.

It was the third major blaze to hit Santa Cruz County in the past month. A 520-acre blaze destroyed 11 buildings in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and a fire near Corralitos covered more than 4,200 acres and destroyed about 100 buildings.

Along the coast in the Los Padres National Forest, a wildfire burning since Saturday forced 75 homes and businesses to be evacuated. And just miles away, firefighters worked to stanch a huge fire that has destroyed two homes since it began two weeks ago. It was nearly 60 percent contained after charring 83 square miles.

Near the Nevada border, authorities said Sunday that they are studying a "person of interest" in last summer's catastrophic Lake Tahoe wildfire but lack enough evidence to make an arrest.

Tuesday will mark the one-year anniversary of the blaze, which destroyed 254 homes, caused $140 million in property damage and scorched nearly 5 square miles. Investigators think the fire started with stray embers from an illegal campfire at a popular party spot.

In southern New Mexico, firefighters burned out vegetation along a forest road to stop a 67-square-mile wildfire that's destroying grazing allotments. The fire 20 miles southwest of Hope was 35 percent contained Sunday, fire information officer Deanna Younger said.

An air tanker and helicopters were dropping water and retardant on the fire, she said.

Two other lightning-sparked wildfires also had burned nearly 47 square miles. One was west of Roswell in southern New Mexico and the other west of Raton in the northern part of the state.

The fires were feeding on grass, brush, cacti and some pinon pine and juniper trees. No structures were threatened.

I find it difficult to understand why people are surprised by such fires.

This areas ecology is driven by fire, it has been for 1,000's of years.

The real question is why people were allowed to build there in the first place.

No, the real question is why you felt the need to obsessively post this at least 4 times on this blog.

Because no one, including the above article and you wants to deal with the real cause.

Get your head out of the sand or ashes, and face Mr. reality

I feel great compassion for those facing displacement and destruction, but we must admit, nature always has the final say, no matter how we try to contain or manipulate her.

When you build residential housing in an ecosystem shaped and developed by fire.

It doesn't mean that ecosystem will cease to be that.

I'm close to 100 miles from the fires and the air is miserable. The smell makes you think the fires are right outside your windows.

me, too. At least 100 miles away and yet the sky here is white and there's a strong odor of smoke. Must be absolutely miserable for those living closer. And no rain in sight.....

This is more reason to have our National Guard HOME here in U.S. and not off in Iraq. There are more and more national disasters with these weird weather patterns. We need them to assist here.

I agree. Good news, our governor is throwing every resource at every fire. Very proactive. Yay.

Unusual storms in the mid west flooded the place.......storms in California started huge numbers of fires.......... This has to be climate change at work. Climate change=weather change.......more big storms, more often.

There are 100 fires burning in Mendocino County right now! Most caused by lighting strikes on Friday night and Saturday morning. Very scary!

Good luck, Sparky123, hope it clears by you. It can be real problem with Mendocino County fires, due to the illicit "farming", trying to keep the fire crews from going downwind.

Nah, just kidding - the crews bust hump 24/7 and never get enough credit.

Dear N. CA,
Hang in there. We know what you are going through.
We know what it's like to have an impossibly short amount of time to figure out which of your cherished possessions accumulated over a lifetime you will take with you in the limited space of your car and which you will leave to lose forever. We know that it's hard to pack a bag for a weekend when you KNOW you'll be returning to your house, much less how hard it is to pack a bag when you know that what you take may have to last you for a long time.
We know it's hard trying to comfort your kids and then even harder when the kids want to bring their favorite toys and you just want to be able to fit their clothes... Oh, and has anybody seen the dog?
We know what it's like to try to find your insurance papers, birth certificates, etc.
We know you're scared to death you'll lose everything and you don't know how you'll start over.
Take your pictures of your kids when they were babies. Take the quilt your grandmother made you, kiss your mother's armoire good bye and know this:
We feel for you. We understand. We care.
And, when all the crazies come out to say it's your fault because of where you lived, who you voted for and/or that you are too liberal, know that we've been there, too.
Love,
New Orleans

This NoCal resident thanks you, and believe me, my heart goes out to you and the other good people of N.O.

Living only 45 miles from Santa Cruz, I have seen, and smelled, the three major fires they've had there this past month. The Indian Fire south of me has dumped ash all over this area - and it is still only 55% contained after destroying 53,000+ acres.

The lightening storms yesterday were exactly what we DIDN'T need -

Again, I thank you for your compassion and concern.

53,000 acres were not destroyed they were regenerated.

This is what a fire driven ecosystem does and will continue to do, whether or not we build home in it.

I'm sorry, I have to complain. This is a badly written article. It changes subjects and hops about the state erratically. One example: talking about a fire near Sacramento, then the next sentence begins "The blaze began in Napa County...." There are at least two counties between Sacramento and Napa.... I guess fire reporting is just a messy business.

That, and Napa is southWEST of Sacramento. I was trying to understand why there was a huge unreported mushroom cloud over the western hills, then I got to the Napa part and realized this reporter is clueless; regurgitating probably, like some MSM talking head.

I'd have to agree with your analysis, Paprikapink.

"South of San Francisco, a fire that destroyed homes and closed a stretch of highway was 90 percent contained after charring 630 acres, or less than a square mile. Evacuation orders were lifted Saturday, a day after roughly 2,000 people fled their homes."

This would be Watsonville, I'm thinking but the article isn't going to say so.

I live in the far norrthern part of California, and let me tell ya, that was some lightning yesterday. Started in the predawn hours and lasted throughout the day. Continual strikes. Not just a isolated thunder cloud. There was lightning throughout the northern half of the state. All this with no rain. Dry lightning after so much heat for so long, we could see the plumes of smoke from the fires burning in every direction.

This type of weather is not unprecedented here, but it is unusual. It was facinating, beautiful, and a little unsettling.

Though I live in PA I can understand what you're saying. After a lightning storm the woods have numerous small columns of smoke rising from trees that were hit. Like gigantic cigarette butts smouldering. These 'dry' storms are unusual here.

How strange. Last night in mid-Iowa there was lightning that just went on and on, I've never seen anything quite like it. Not after a particularly hot day, either--mid 80s, probably. But it seemed odd that it didn't move on but just kind of sat and struck over and over again.

Sitting out on my patio yesterday afternoon, I was eaten alive by mosquitos. We have never had a mosquito problem here before. They were almost non-existent. It hasn't been a particularly wet season. We have had winds this year unlike any other year. The midwest is flooding. California is once again ablaze. There are more earthquakes around the globe than in recent memory. Temperatures are rising where I live and around the world. Ice caps are melting and more famine is predicted in areas heretofor unaffected. AND, yesterday I read a story in my newspaper about a minister in the midwest that is preaching to his mega church that global warming is nothing but a myth, that what is going on is simply a normal weather cycle. It's time to begin requiring science classes at the seminary.

It was over 100 in Southern California yesterday. I've narrowed down the cause to either global warming or summertime.

I have to tell you xargaw, that it is widely known throughout California the dangers of West Nile Virus. I realize this has nothing to do with the fires in our state, but the virus directly comes from being bitten by mosquito's. There have been a number of cases in our state. One older man survived after a long illness and came out of it fine. One woman survived the virus last summer, but not without it causing her to become disabled over it. She was bitten by a single mosquito, and was feeling sick that very night. She was taken to the hospital, but even though she was very sick for awhile she did make it through. Only with serious consquenses to her legs. She was lucky to survive, as more people die then survive and if they do, often with terrible changes to thier entire lives. The woman was bitten by a single mosquito, you have been bitten by many. Birds that eat the mosquitos die. If you find dead birds around your place do not pick them up. Call the Police or animal authorities. I am very concerned for you right now with getting so many bites. I pray you were bitten by uneffected mosquito's. If not I think you might be very sick by now. Please be ok.

Let me guess. They are battling these fires primarily with water, fresh water that they simply do not have to spare. The technology is here now to create an arsenal that could extinguish large areas of burning forest instantly, but i guess there is simply not enough profit in manufacturing them, unlike bombs that kill humans.

Just like the technology is available for us to be running our automobiles on something other than Oil(did you know the Germans ran their War Machinery on Synthetic Fuel during WW2- where are the formulas and patents for this discovery I wonder?).
We're being taken to the cleaners and no one seems to care.

Exactly. People are such ostriches anymore. They just stick their heads in the sand if they don't want to hear it. The other day I saw a bumper sticker that said "The Trouble With This Country is Apathy........But Who Cares!" That about sums it up.

There are many wonderful advances in technology, medicine, everything. Unless it has the capacity of making someone or some entity very rich, we don't hear about it.

Depending upon where the fire is and the resources available they use water and a fire retardant.

For fires along the coast, CalFire's helicopters scoop up water from the ocean. If inland they use lakes, swimming pools and any other source available.

The larger fixed-wing airplanes use fire retardent for the most part - they drop their load, return to an airport, load up with retardent and head out again immediately.
