NEW YORK — Veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw has agreed to moderate NBC's "Meet the Press" through the November election to fill the vacancy created by the death of Tim Russert.

Brokaw will start next week, the network announced Sunday. Anchor Brian Williams did the show this week and announced the decision at its end.

Brokaw first talked to NBC News President Steve Capus about what the network would do when the two men rode a train back to New York from Washington following Russert's funeral and memorial service on Wednesday. Brokaw told him Saturday that he would do it, Capus said.

"I'm just thrilled that Tom has agreed to do this," Capus told The Associated Press.

The decision gives NBC a well-known, authoritative presence at the helm of the broadcast in an election year. "Meet the Press" dominated the Sunday morning ratings under Russert, reportedly earning $60 million in revenue, and Brokaw's presence could blunt any effort by ABC's second-place "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos to cut into the edge.

Brokaw was the nation's most popular news anchor when he stepped down from "Nightly News" following the 2004 election. He has continued to make documentaries for NBC News and was a frequent commentator on MSNBC during primary night coverage this year.

He said he volunteered for the job in part as a tribute to Russert, who died of a heart attack on June 13. The two men were close friends who spoke almost daily and Brokaw gave the opening speech at Russert's Kennedy Center memorial.

"Tim was the first to say that `Meet the Press' was a national treasure and he was a temporary custodian," Brokaw said by phone from Montana. "We both understood the importance of it to the country and to NBC News and he took it to an entirely new level."

He intends to follow Russert's template of aggressive questioning based on research of a guest's public record. The show will continue to be Washington-based, with Betsy Fischer as executive producer.

"Many people have described this election as the election of a lifetime and we're in the thick of it," Capus said. "It just logically makes sense to have someone that the nation knows and the nation trusts with a steady hand."

It also gives NBC News time to study its options before deciding on a successor. Brokaw joked during Russert's memorial service that the Kennedy Center was filled with people interested in the job. David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell and Chris Matthews are considered the top in-house candidates.

Brokaw, 68, wouldn't be the oldest Sunday morning anchor if he decided to stick with it: CBS News' "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer is 71.

However, Brokaw has made it clear the move is temporary, Capus said.

"The plan is for me to be in place until they can find somebody who can take it over on a permanent basis," Brokaw said.

Brokaw had already planned to be a "utility player" in NBC News' convention and election coverage, and is the most likely choice to take the analyst's role beside Williams that Russert once filled. He's already emerged as a voice of caution during opinionated MSNBC coverage with Matthews and Keith Olbermann.

NBC News must also find someone for Russert's job as Washington bureau chief.

Williams' announcement Sunday followed a package of highlights from Wednesday's memorial service. Brokaw last week anchored a "Meet the Press" that was entirely a Russert tribute.

Some critics have accused NBC News of being excessive in its Russert memorializing, but Capus said he's received condolence letters from world leaders and that it was clear Russert had touched people more than typical journalists do. He noted that other networks covered Russert's death extensively and that CBS News placed a full-page condolence ad in The New York Times last week.

"I offer no apologies," he said.

It doesn't matter. They, the reporters, journalists, and the politicians are all the same. No one in the MSM or cable news cares about the people. Greed (in one way or another) controls all of them. Always has, always will.

I guess when you never watch it you dont have much to say, but I think Tim's son could be groomed for the job. They need a young person for the job. Luck can speak good and I think he would be great for the job and so would Rachel be good.

Ultimately, I hope that NBC goes outside to recruit the next host of Meet the Press. I think Bill Moyers would be an excellent choice. No one can doubt his honesty and integrity. He'll definitely be fair, using and seeking only the facts to guide his interviews.

Frankly, my dear, etc. I wouldn't watch Brokaw if he were the only talking head on tv, and I don't watch the others, either. Lehrer and Olbermann may be the only real news guys on tv.

Bill Moyers would be outstanding--a real journalist, not an inside-the-beltway-questions-we've-all-heard-before-hack.

That's why the MSM will never choose him.

Yeah someone who was LBJ's press secretary wouldn't have any inclination to ask inside-the-beltway questions. ????

I like that idea but I don't think Moyers but I think he is too independent to agree to work for NBC.

Can anybody explain to me why Andrea Mitchell did not get this job aside from the fact that she is a woman?

Tom Brokaw is not a good choice for this spot. Andrea Mitchell has far better credentials for the job. this is sexism, pure and simple.

You're probably right.

It might be that the NBC execs are afraid of breaking the mold that has a male as the ultimate authority, when it come to the news. But since when has an American news honcho been known for their courage?

Unfortunately, the Katie Couric experiment probably hurt Andrea Mitchell's chances, which is unfair, because the two couldn't be more different.

I agree here. But lookee-Brokaw is a good temporary choice ala Schieffer filling in for Rather pre-Couric at CBS, why not?

Oh - and don't even get me going about the Florida election debacle in 2000. Fox News took control and NBC totally caved. Thanks, Brokaw and the rest of NBC, CBS and ABC. Look what you did.

I used to be a huge fan of Brokaw until the night before the invasion/occupation of Iraq when he stood there amongst all the other journalists/reporters/embedded press and stated that we have to be careful of how much damage we do and where our bombs land because 'tomorrow we are going to own it". I was half dozing on the sofa, sat upright and stated loudly, "I don't believe he said that!!". My husband said, "I wondered if you were going to respond to that". I never forgave that mentality as I was always adamently against what they were all doing. Funny that the local alternative newspaper, a couple of years later, quoted Mr. Brokaw when they published their worst of the year statements by a reporter. Hmmm - guess someone else was paying attention.

I used to trust certain people in the media, but there is no longer even one person in the MSM that I can count on to give us the absolute truth.

Tim Russert seemed to be a nice guy - a friend to all - and I appreciate his contribution to society, his friends, family, and many others. But people like Russert, Brokaw, Rather, David Gregory (who dances with Rove), could have done a lot to prevent the awful situation we're in to day. They too, as well as our Congressional reps, drank the kool-aid. Damn!!

Uh, that was Colin Powell's Pottery Barn analogy, "If you break it, you own it." That's was Brokaw's reference.

I think Brokaw is not as fresh as other potential anchors, but it was also the obvious safe play for NBC. I'll watch the first couple episodes to see how he handles it. If it sucks then it's coming off my TIVO season pass.

How about Katie Couric? She's looking, isn't she? She could tell us which candidate "rocks"!

Wow, there are some Brokaw-haters online today. He's only on MTP for about 4 1/2 months and then he's back to MT, and the slower pace of life that suits him well.

NBC has several good candidates to pick from, and there are others outside their stable that would be quite good. Gwen Ifill would be my first pick, because she seems to have the same sense of integrity and fairness that Tim Russert had. David Gregory would also be a good choice.

I see Andrea Mitchell as the best choice for Washington Bureau Chief.

This is exactly what I expected. NBC didn't need upheaval and backroom intrigue during a big election season. Tom Brokaw has the gravitas needed to transition MTP and opine from the wing chair during the conventions. But I happen to be one person who agrees that the grief-fest on NBC/MSNBC has gone waaaay over the top. 36 hours after his death I tuned into MSNBC for a little news and still they were running nonstop Tim coverage. Today, believe it or not, they're re-running the entire memorial service. I mean he was a great reporter, but come on! Other than JFK no dead president has gotten this kind of coverage! And did anybody catch Bob Novak's most recent column disclosing that Tim Russert had been a Novak "source" for more than 30 years, dating back to when he was on Sen. Moynihan's staff. Including all the time he was NBC's bureau chief. Wonder what the NBC insiders think now -- having their guy be outed as peddling scoops to the guy who fingered Valerie Plame?

The Novak thing is disturbing. Russ talked to a lot of politicians on background. Wonder if he fed that same info to Novak, also on background? Wonder if they talked about Valerie Plame?

As Novak is the Right Wing Prince of Darkness, it puts Russert in a different, more unfavorable light. Not that Russert was the saint the coverage made him out to be but this sullies his reputation.

Novak can say anything now because he won't be challenged. Don't know that I believe him.

I don`t have any problem with the non stop coverage, I chose not to watch. But surely you know it comes with some affection of course, but mostly for ratings and buisness decision. So many times I just shook my head during Tim`s interview , for passing so many issues but dwelling more on personal attacks. I would say Brokaw is a good decision, who else but him in the same family.

I find that constipated, monotonal, flat affect delivery of Mr. Brokaw's so off-putting.

I wish someone with personality and at least the appearance of enthusiasm was replacing Tim Russert.

I'm definitely feeling Tim Russert's absence on "Meet The Press" this morning. Brian Williams looked out of place. BUT I do feel Tom Brokaw would be a good choice....Just hope he stays NEUTRAL as Tim did.

Too bad. Tom Brokaw is stuck in the 1950s and he has a bias against Obama.

Come on. He is what a journalist is supposed to be. It seems that the public has forgotten that the news is supposed to be delivered without bias. Brokaw does NOT promote for or go against one candidate or another. Thank God for that.

If chris could shut up and listen more, I think he would be perfect for the job. But nobody else seems to fit. Meet the press will never be the same again, I fear.

There's that line in Rudyard Kipling's "If,": "...to walk with kings, yet not lose the common touch." Russert was blessed with this rare attribute. Unfortunately, none of the usual cast of characters of the NBC/MSNBC line-up do, much as this particular political junky appreciates their input. None of them rises to the Russert golden standard of gravitas, geniality, accessibility, no-nonsense, incomparable footwork, compassion, humor and first-person knowledge of how the Congress and/or the White House work. Brokaw is knowlegeable, but not even he has the full bag of tricks we are yearning for (and quite frankly after a while I really tire of his gravel-in-molasses voice).

I fear we will have to settle for less, or perhaps a new model altogether...
