NEW YORK — Veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw has agreed to moderate NBC's "Meet the Press" through the November election to fill the vacancy created by the death of Tim Russert.

Brokaw will start next week, the network announced Sunday. Anchor Brian Williams did the show this week and announced the decision at its end.

Brokaw first talked to NBC News President Steve Capus about what the network would do when the two men rode a train back to New York from Washington following Russert's funeral and memorial service on Wednesday. Brokaw told him Saturday that he would do it, Capus said.

"I'm just thrilled that Tom has agreed to do this," Capus told The Associated Press.

The decision gives NBC a well-known, authoritative presence at the helm of the broadcast in an election year. "Meet the Press" dominated the Sunday morning ratings under Russert, reportedly earning $60 million in revenue, and Brokaw's presence could blunt any effort by ABC's second-place "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos to cut into the edge.

Brokaw was the nation's most popular news anchor when he stepped down from "Nightly News" following the 2004 election. He has continued to make documentaries for NBC News and was a frequent commentator on MSNBC during primary night coverage this year.

He said he volunteered for the job in part as a tribute to Russert, who died of a heart attack on June 13. The two men were close friends who spoke almost daily and Brokaw gave the opening speech at Russert's Kennedy Center memorial.

"Tim was the first to say that `Meet the Press' was a national treasure and he was a temporary custodian," Brokaw said by phone from Montana. "We both understood the importance of it to the country and to NBC News and he took it to an entirely new level."

He intends to follow Russert's template of aggressive questioning based on research of a guest's public record. The show will continue to be Washington-based, with Betsy Fischer as executive producer.

"Many people have described this election as the election of a lifetime and we're in the thick of it," Capus said. "It just logically makes sense to have someone that the nation knows and the nation trusts with a steady hand."

It also gives NBC News time to study its options before deciding on a successor. Brokaw joked during Russert's memorial service that the Kennedy Center was filled with people interested in the job. David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell and Chris Matthews are considered the top in-house candidates.

Brokaw, 68, wouldn't be the oldest Sunday morning anchor if he decided to stick with it: CBS News' "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer is 71.

However, Brokaw has made it clear the move is temporary, Capus said.

"The plan is for me to be in place until they can find somebody who can take it over on a permanent basis," Brokaw said.

Brokaw had already planned to be a "utility player" in NBC News' convention and election coverage, and is the most likely choice to take the analyst's role beside Williams that Russert once filled. He's already emerged as a voice of caution during opinionated MSNBC coverage with Matthews and Keith Olbermann.

NBC News must also find someone for Russert's job as Washington bureau chief.

Williams' announcement Sunday followed a package of highlights from Wednesday's memorial service. Brokaw last week anchored a "Meet the Press" that was entirely a Russert tribute.

Some critics have accused NBC News of being excessive in its Russert memorializing, but Capus said he's received condolence letters from world leaders and that it was clear Russert had touched people more than typical journalists do. He noted that other networks covered Russert's death extensively and that CBS News placed a full-page condolence ad in The New York Times last week.

"I offer no apologies," he said.

The triumph of mediocrity. This isn't a bad choice, since it'll give me one more reason not to turn on the TV Sunday morning.

GOOD CHOICE!

I agree. The man deserves it, but more importantly, is the most competent to do the job. Anyone else in that job in the short term would be an insult to the late Tim Russert.

I think that NBC picked Brokaw for the time being because he is a seasoned journalist. These are BIG shoes to fill and they aren't going to jump into this lightly. No matter whoever they pick, they won't live up to Russert. Brokaw is a familiar face but he is not going to be the final successor to Russert. He is not bucking for the job. He is a trusted voice of NBC and I think that it what they want now. Keep an even keel... especially in the Sunday morning time slot. They have already given Gregory his own show on MSNBC - Race to the White House.
I hope they don't rush into the final decision. I am glad to see Brokaw at the helm... unfortunately there goes his summer in Montana :)

"Big shoes" to fill? If by "big" you mean "big" lie-peddling (Iraq War -- "I didn't know!!!"), "big" sucker-punching, "big" insider-worship, "big" subjective observation based on mediocre politics-as-usual table talk, then yes, you're right. And Brokaw will do nicely, thank you.

How do you really feel?

Judging by the overwhleming outpouring of emotion over Tim Russert's passing, I am not the only who liked Tim.

I think the MSM - especially cable 24 hour news - has stooped to a big low. They all just sit around to hear themselves talk. No one gets into a topic. Never cover meat and potatoes of a story. At least with Russert for that hour, they actually talked about things. Not sat across a table from one another and yelled at each other.

Tom Brokaw? Come on, they might as well place a bowl of cottage cheese in the chair...boring to the 10th degree.

When Tim was in that chair, you knew he loved it. Every Sunday morning, he was like a kid on Christmas morning getting ready to open his gifts. It was all in his facial expression and body language. But then, no one can fill Tim shoes. Such a commentator, comes along once in a lifetime.

I just don't think I can do Brokaw. I'll give him a chance. Sunday mornings will never be the same; I may give up coffee drinking, what's the point?

My sentiments exactly. I can't imagine him being anything as electric as Tim. How so disappointing it all is. He made my mornings just to see his happy bubbling eyes. I will miss him forever.

One thing is clear Brokaw is more of a teleprompter guy and cannot control a simple interview. You have Biden and Graham on the same program and you ask them to speak about everything but the bills and statements they have personally made. When Graham start throwing out the political garbage, the next thing you do is ask his opinion on Abu Grabih, the you go back and verify he wants to take a real position and then run the tape of Rumsfeld speaking about how what we saw was the tip of the iceberg and prevalent on 60% of all overseas prisions and you repeat a number of Grahams whollier than thow speeches. With Biden, you ask him his position on Fisa and the hit him right between the eyes with his vote in getting the phone companies off from spying domestically on all Americans if if somewhere down the line did his policies change. This isn't rocket science, to smoke out liars on major issues that are important rather than pushing the security agenda, you squeeze until hopefully they give and give up a name.

I would rather see a 25 year old in there. If you don't come out of the blocks fully prepared, those guests will talk about what ever they want and nothing what the listeners what to hear. That's exactly what happened. That's what happened and Brokaw was run over like a freight train.

I think Tom is a great guy and has a good heart and as a news consultant is wise and fantastic addition if not the best addition to the NBC team; but if his heart is not in it I agree yes bring in someone else. Tom is not too old...but someone more fitting the task may be appropriate. Andrea Mitchell is 61, I would team her up in a heart beat with Bryant Gumbel and let the two of them run with the show...I think two heads are better than one! It would be a nice perspective to have these two ambitious sharpies teaming up to give us not only the truth, but the truth from fresh and diverse perspectives. Between the two of them these politicians might have to be a little more prepared!

Nice to see Tom Brokaw on TV again. Wish it could have been under happier circumstances. I've never been short of respect for Tom, I'm sure he'll do great.

I still say to go with Rachel Maddow for the permanent spot. She's tough but civilized. Reminds me of Tim at his best when questioning guests. Granted, Rachel may not have Tim's edge, but given time I'm sure she could ease into the job while applying her own style.

I think Rachel's great, but I don't think NBC will risk replacing Russert with an openly gay woman.

Her sex should have nothing to do with it.

I guess sex is a filtered word because my post just got scrapped because of what I said above.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:08 PM on 06/22/2008

That wouldn't be why they don't choose Rachel. They wouldn't pick her because of her open bias towards the left. Tim Russert set the standard of keeping personal positions out of it, they wouldn't replace him with a partisan person like Rachel or Keith.

Yep, you got it right. Only NBC could bring an old, zombie with a boring voice like Brokaw. Why couldn't they bring in a woman? Dee Dee Myers or Gwen Ifill could have saved the dying network.

I'm glad they did not go with Brian Williams . . . he is where he needs to be and stay.

And Brokow, well, brings respect and distinction to any venue, but glad it is only temporary.

Let's go younger after the elections . . . hopefully they start the search now.

Chris Matthews?

Really?

They're considering him?

My god. That I can just see.

Matthews: So, today on Meet the Press we have Barack Obama and John McCain. To start, I want to ask you both this: Doesn't it seem like you're both like, I don't know, like gladiators, or something?

Obama: Well,
McCain: Uh...

Mathews: Don't you think so? Gladiators, or like some kind of black and white thing, like if they remade Spartacus and made him a black slave? Did they have those in Rome?

Obama: Well, I wouldn't...
McCain: Well, I'd say we...

Matthews: Can't you just see it? Can't you just smell the leather, the arena, the blood, the sort of lions and tigers smell.... ? God I love politics!

Obama: Well Chris, I think...
McCain: Listen, I'm not THAT old.! But to get back to...

Matthews HA!

Chuck Todd is milquetoast compared to the other candidates. I can't see it going to Andrea Mitchell either.

Matthews would be a good choice. He speaks truth to power but he comes off as too opinionated.

David Gregory is the best pick, I think. He asks pointed questions and knows how to handle an argumentative panel. I also find it interesting that Brokaw will host MTP through the 2008 election which will be when Gregory's show, "Race For The White House" comes to an end.

No way to Andrea Mitchell. I like her well enough, but she gets too tongue-tied and tends to repeat a lot. Chris Matthews is a funny guy sometimes, but I cannot imagine him in a role like Meet The Press. Even though, he acts totally different on his Sunday show than he does on Hardball.

That brings me to David Gregory. I'm sorry to disagree with you, but anyone that thinks the press has been tough and responsible on the Bush administration loses all credibility with me. He scoffed at McClellans statement regarding press complacency like it was nonsense when in fact it was 100% spot-on. He may have asked Bush 10 hard questions in 7 1/2 years and to him that is just A-OK.

I've never seen Chuck Todd interview anyone so I cannot imagine that he would even be considered, but, with that said...I like the guy. He pretty much knows what he is talking about.

Brokaw is a decent choice for now. We will see how it goes I guess.

At least it's not Olbermann or Matthews.

No offense but the show would have to be remained "Meet the Democrats" because no conservative would go near that show.

I hope they groom Chuck Todd for the position, if not then Gwen Ifill would be the next best choice...clearly.

I also thought of Chuck Todd - he's not "known" like so many of the others, and I think could be hard hitting - and hopefully, willing to call them out when ridiculous nonsense is spoken.

But the person I would love to see - but since he's not with NBC, it's not likely - is Carl Bernstein. Now there is someone who doesn't let anyone get away with platitudes. And, of course, we all know he is a REAL investigative reporter. If NBC is serious about keeping up standards on MTP, he's the best.

Sometimes the most obvious choice is not the wisest one. What I liked about Tim Russert was that he seemed more "normal" than a news anchor. He wasn't really worried about his "position." People like Brokaw and Williams are too worried about their images to ask tough questions. They do need to go with someone fresh..or even unknown.

I saw Meet The Press this morning and thought it was rather lackluster, though I thought Biden was a good guest. Keith Olbermann doesn't seem to think he is qualified but I think he is better than he thinks and he would be much more dynamic in running that program. Maybe they'll give him a shot when Brokaw turns out to be not much of a draw!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:37 PM on 06/22/2008

Keith Olbermann doesn't know how to ask concise questions. He's always too longwinded. In love with his own verbiage. (Even in his editorial "essays") His either/or questions are often so overblown that his guests lose track of what in hell he's asking. Typical: Do you think Obama's credibility will be damaged by his turndown or public funding or do you think blah, blah, blah blah. My advice to him about such questions is: SHUT UP BEFORE "OR" I suggrest he listen to/watch Larry King. Though hardly Keith's intellectual equal, Larry knows how to ask a quick, probing question and LISTEN to the answer. If Keith lets the hot air out of his questions he could ask twice as many of them during any given time period. Wrong for Meet the Press. Skip Keith as a prospect.
As for Matthews as a possibility. NO. He asks and answers his own questions and never gives his guests time to answer. He's somewhat hyper and often comes across as a bit nutty. Too radioactive for Meet the Press -- and maybe for his own program as well.
