NEW YORK — Veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw has agreed to moderate NBC's "Meet the Press" through the November election to fill the vacancy created by the death of Tim Russert.

Brokaw will start next week, the network announced Sunday. Anchor Brian Williams did the show this week and announced the decision at its end.

Brokaw first talked to NBC News President Steve Capus about what the network would do when the two men rode a train back to New York from Washington following Russert's funeral and memorial service on Wednesday. Brokaw told him Saturday that he would do it, Capus said.

"I'm just thrilled that Tom has agreed to do this," Capus told The Associated Press.

The decision gives NBC a well-known, authoritative presence at the helm of the broadcast in an election year. "Meet the Press" dominated the Sunday morning ratings under Russert, reportedly earning $60 million in revenue, and Brokaw's presence could blunt any effort by ABC's second-place "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos to cut into the edge.

Brokaw was the nation's most popular news anchor when he stepped down from "Nightly News" following the 2004 election. He has continued to make documentaries for NBC News and was a frequent commentator on MSNBC during primary night coverage this year.

He said he volunteered for the job in part as a tribute to Russert, who died of a heart attack on June 13. The two men were close friends who spoke almost daily and Brokaw gave the opening speech at Russert's Kennedy Center memorial.

"Tim was the first to say that `Meet the Press' was a national treasure and he was a temporary custodian," Brokaw said by phone from Montana. "We both understood the importance of it to the country and to NBC News and he took it to an entirely new level."

Story continues below

He intends to follow Russert's template of aggressive questioning based on research of a guest's public record. The show will continue to be Washington-based, with Betsy Fischer as executive producer.

"Many people have described this election as the election of a lifetime and we're in the thick of it," Capus said. "It just logically makes sense to have someone that the nation knows and the nation trusts with a steady hand."

It also gives NBC News time to study its options before deciding on a successor. Brokaw joked during Russert's memorial service that the Kennedy Center was filled with people interested in the job. David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell and Chris Matthews are considered the top in-house candidates.

Brokaw, 68, wouldn't be the oldest Sunday morning anchor if he decided to stick with it: CBS News' "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer is 71.

However, Brokaw has made it clear the move is temporary, Capus said.

"The plan is for me to be in place until they can find somebody who can take it over on a permanent basis," Brokaw said.

Brokaw had already planned to be a "utility player" in NBC News' convention and election coverage, and is the most likely choice to take the analyst's role beside Williams that Russert once filled. He's already emerged as a voice of caution during opinionated MSNBC coverage with Matthews and Keith Olbermann.

NBC News must also find someone for Russert's job as Washington bureau chief.

Williams' announcement Sunday followed a package of highlights from Wednesday's memorial service. Brokaw last week anchored a "Meet the Press" that was entirely a Russert tribute.

Some critics have accused NBC News of being excessive in its Russert memorializing, but Capus said he's received condolence letters from world leaders and that it was clear Russert had touched people more than typical journalists do. He noted that other networks covered Russert's death extensively and that CBS News placed a full-page condolence ad in The New York Times last week.

"I offer no apologies," he said.

I watched Meet the Press on-line after returning from church this morning.

I believe that Brian Williams did a wonderful job filling his friend's (Tim Russert) shoes. He asked great questions and was fair, just as Tim was fair, to his guests.

On another note, this broadcast simply reinforced my belief that Joe Biden would be a terrific VP candidate. He came across as knowledgeable, good humored, yet firmly entrenched in the Obama camp.

If Biden isn't Obama's choice, I hope he will consider Tom Daschle. . .but NOT Hillary Clinton.

Janel;: I agree with you about Joe Biden for Obama's VP. The man has the right amount of energy, experience, knowledge and gives good debate! He seems to be genuinely enthusiastic in his backing of Obama so from all present indications he'd be a loyal running mate ... not like Edwards who ran off on his own track during the Kerry campaign.

Why don't they use the guy who challenged Bush and Co's pre-war BS ? Oh, that's right!! ... There wasn't one!

Fairplay is all we ask for. Brian Williams offered a very poor performance this morning. I hope he is never considered for that job.

Now, I would hope that Brokaw, given that he and Tim were best pals, would be fair. There is lot that the news media is allowing John McCain to get away with.

All we want is an even playing field. Ask Obama the tough questions, if he falters, so be it. But please do the same with John McCain.

Fair is fair. If you are going to cover Obama one way, do the same for McCain.

I will wait to see Mr. Brokaw's first show on Sunday.

Tom Brokaw taking over MTP for the remainder of 2008? One thing that struck me as odd were the comments he made in the aftermath of Scott McClellan’s expose of the Bush/Cheney involvement with the Plame leak and the overall view of Bush’s Iraq War.

Brokaw compared Bush’s misuse of intelligence information as typical of prior wars in which Americans fought and died. He said, almost dismissively, that all presidents spread propaganda to get public support.

Here's a guy who wrote about "The Greatest Generation" with specific emphasis on World War 2. Yet, he acts just like Bush when he implies that the Second World War is equivalent to Bush's Iraq War.

He surely can't be so naive as to think that both Germany and Japan were under severe 12-year sanctions prior to the Second World War.

He certainly can't believe that the countries of Germany and Japan were split in thirds by a 12-year, U.S.-British-imposed No Fly Zone policy.

He can't be so dumb as to not know that, unlike Germany and Japan which possessed advanced aircraft, navies, well-armed, well-disciplined armies, Iraq had no navy, didn't launch one single aircraft or missile in its defense and a rag-tag group of disoriented Shia conscripts who threw down their weapons shortly after Bush's bombing campaign began.

Who better to continue promoting the Bush policies than Tom Brokaw who was so quick to embrace those policies almost six years ago?

Thank God. I love Brokaw. Brian Williams was horrible this morning.

I dislike both and for good reason.

I would say, it is an excellent decision for the time being considering all the negatives coming in MSNBC`s way, with all the loud mouth, male hosts.
CBS did the same with Scheifer, which actually paid off. Then of course they became greedy and wanted more ,so removed him, when it was going just fine !
Look at them now.

Okay Tom, do your job --RIGHT. And if you can't do that, don't do it at all. I heard Bryan Williams raked Obama over the coals today -- we don't need any more of that partisan SH--.

I don't know if News anchors are best positioned for Russert 's job. Williams did an alright job today, but I thought David Gregory, a real political reporter, did a better job when he sat in a few times for Russert in the past. I think Brokaw is a stabalizing force though and he'll work well as the temporary replacement. I think it pretty much assures Meet the Press continues to win the ratings war, and anyone who doesn't like Brokaw I concider pretty much inhuman.

That will give MTP stability, which it was going to need, and it will give NBC time to make its choice at leisure so the program doesn't bounce around. Brokaw is solid and does good interviews.

Well I suppose it's better than Brian Williams.

Ironic though, Tom Brokaw makes a comment at Tim Russert's memorial joking about people there bucking for Tim's job. And now he's the replacement!

Too Bad, At least with Russert , he tried to be fair. Brokaw is of the old Left wing MSM.

I love Tom Brokaw . . . . just too old for my pick!

He brings dignity and respect to any show . . . and great that he will stay through the elections.

But, hopefully . . . they start him co-anchoring with some younger potential hosts during this stint . . . to help start-up a younger new host right after the elections . . . . !

I will miss watching Tim Russert immensely, especially this election season. From outside the US, we wait anxiously for honest debate to come back to US television, and I thought Russert would lead this in a fair and balanced manner. I considered going to Stephanopoulos, but the decision to have Tom Brokaw absolutely will keep me watching MTP. He's the right guy for this job, this year.

That's good I guess as I thought Brian Williams did a poor job this morning. He's ill-equipped as a nightly newscaster to take on these guys.

Ditto... I was shocked, actually how bad Williams did. He let FAR too much skate with Graham.

Exactly, that's what I thought also. Actually, all Lindsey had to do was sit there, Brian did all the work for him, just as it will probably be with this new jerk. Going to lose viewership for sure!

Completely agree how awful Williams was -- I actually said out loud, how many times is he going to let Graham just keep repeating this week's GOP anti-Obama sound bite of "he'll do anything to win" ???? Also, it's like Williams was utterly clueless about McCain's own continued waffling on whether he was going to go private or public in regard to his campaign financing.

Really ? I did not watch him today, I guess I did not miss much then.

I have to disagree. Terrible choice. Neither Brokaw or Williams is the kind of hardhitting journalist for this position. Chris Matthews gets my vote.

I agree with you totally. Chris Mathews is the only one that asks questions anywhere near like Russert. The only difference is Russert always waited for the answer and never jumped in. Brokaw should do a fairly decent job, but there is a country mile of distance between his style and Tim Russerts style. Brokaw is old school, so the show will be different. Turning to a senior member of a broadcast team in this kind of situation is the right thing to do until things gets sorted out. I do not think Brokaw will stay in the position because he as already retired once. Tim Russert's shoes is a big pair for a network to fill. The people of NBC should take their time with this task.

Matthews is a bloviator. A mostly likable one if your a liberal, which I am, but a bloviator none the less. He shouldn't follow Russert anywhere.
