NEW YORK — Veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw has agreed to moderate NBC's "Meet the Press" through the November election to fill the vacancy created by the death of Tim Russert.

Brokaw will start next week, the network announced Sunday. Anchor Brian Williams did the show this week and announced the decision at its end.

Brokaw first talked to NBC News President Steve Capus about what the network would do when the two men rode a train back to New York from Washington following Russert's funeral and memorial service on Wednesday. Brokaw told him Saturday that he would do it, Capus said.

"I'm just thrilled that Tom has agreed to do this," Capus told The Associated Press.

The decision gives NBC a well-known, authoritative presence at the helm of the broadcast in an election year. "Meet the Press" dominated the Sunday morning ratings under Russert, reportedly earning $60 million in revenue, and Brokaw's presence could blunt any effort by ABC's second-place "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos to cut into the edge.

Brokaw was the nation's most popular news anchor when he stepped down from "Nightly News" following the 2004 election. He has continued to make documentaries for NBC News and was a frequent commentator on MSNBC during primary night coverage this year.

He said he volunteered for the job in part as a tribute to Russert, who died of a heart attack on June 13. The two men were close friends who spoke almost daily and Brokaw gave the opening speech at Russert's Kennedy Center memorial.

"Tim was the first to say that `Meet the Press' was a national treasure and he was a temporary custodian," Brokaw said by phone from Montana. "We both understood the importance of it to the country and to NBC News and he took it to an entirely new level."

He intends to follow Russert's template of aggressive questioning based on research of a guest's public record. The show will continue to be Washington-based, with Betsy Fischer as executive producer.

"Many people have described this election as the election of a lifetime and we're in the thick of it," Capus said. "It just logically makes sense to have someone that the nation knows and the nation trusts with a steady hand."

It also gives NBC News time to study its options before deciding on a successor. Brokaw joked during Russert's memorial service that the Kennedy Center was filled with people interested in the job. David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell and Chris Matthews are considered the top in-house candidates.

Brokaw, 68, wouldn't be the oldest Sunday morning anchor if he decided to stick with it: CBS News' "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer is 71.

However, Brokaw has made it clear the move is temporary, Capus said.

"The plan is for me to be in place until they can find somebody who can take it over on a permanent basis," Brokaw said.

Brokaw had already planned to be a "utility player" in NBC News' convention and election coverage, and is the most likely choice to take the analyst's role beside Williams that Russert once filled. He's already emerged as a voice of caution during opinionated MSNBC coverage with Matthews and Keith Olbermann.

NBC News must also find someone for Russert's job as Washington bureau chief.

Williams' announcement Sunday followed a package of highlights from Wednesday's memorial service. Brokaw last week anchored a "Meet the Press" that was entirely a Russert tribute.

Some critics have accused NBC News of being excessive in its Russert memorializing, but Capus said he's received condolence letters from world leaders and that it was clear Russert had touched people more than typical journalists do. He noted that other networks covered Russert's death extensively and that CBS News placed a full-page condolence ad in The New York Times last week.

"I offer no apologies," he said.

In the last 8 years it has become obvious that if you watch these shows on Sunday morning, you are much easier to fool and brain wash. Although the Russert love-fest and legacy building continues, it was MTP that sold us the propaganda that Iraq had nuclear weapons. Russert allowed Cheney to make those claims unchallenged. It was the closer that allowed W to attack Iraq and it happened on Sunday morning. And if it was Sunday Morning it was MTP.

I find that constipated, monotonal, flat affect delivery of Mr. Brokaw's so off-putting.

I wish someone with personality and at least the appearance of enthusiasm was replacing Tim Russert.

Remember, this is the guy who stated he was glad Bush was president when 9/11 struck, as I recall reading.

Safe Pick. He is a decent questioner. It's going to up to the producers to pick out the tough issues and inconsistencies for questions. When the panel takes over for the last 15-20 minutes it will help also.

Good interim choice. Gravitas, journalistic integrity, steady, and credible.

Then who do you suggest? Brian Williams did a fantastic job this morning on MTP. I think Chris Mathews would fit well with what you seem to hint at.

Not only the old guard, but the guard who was not great on election night 2000.

Am so sick of hearing his garbled voice. He speaks as though his greatest love is to listen to himself.
Loved Russert, profoundly hate Brokaw. Won't be tuning in.

How quickly Chuck Todd gets tossed aside. I like him very much and feel he could do an amazing job in Tims large shoes.

It has been interesting watching the big guys of corporate journalism mourn this week. While Russert was an extra ordinary person and certainly deserved a wonderful celebration and send off most of the time I felt I was watching a bunch of over paid old white guys mourn for their own mortality, and in doing so it became more about them than Tim.

It is not as if NBC had loads of choices. Brokaw is better than Tweety, Olbermann would be unacceptable to conservatives.

I love Olbermann. Maybe after the election this will give him a try. He does great research on his show

Oh can you imagine the ratings, if it were Keith

Oh god....I just CANNOT STAND Brokaw's VOICE. It is so irritating. It sounds like there's stuff in his throat and mouth, and that he can barely open his mouth. Oh, please someone...PLEASE tell the powers that be NOT to offer the job to Brokaw. How awful! I would like to offer a suggestion for another host, but I have none...except...

What about Chris Matthews, or Dan Abrams....with a little more training and homework for Dan? He's got the charisma and can hold his own when questioning guests. I love Keith Olbermann, but he regards himself as being not qualified. Of course, I love him on his OPINION show and that is where he probably should remain for awhile.

Oh...woe is me....woe is me. Please...NOT Brokaw!

As far as journalism goes, the 'old guard' is much preferable to today's crop of 'journalists.' They are concerned only with style, never substance; at worst, they're well-heeled propagandists.

Actually, I'd MUCH prefer to see the likes of Matt Drudge hosting once in a while. How about Meet the New Press.

I would say that this is a HUGE generalization, Diana.

I am probably your age and I am tired of the "old guard" . . .

It's 2008 - This is not re-inventing the wheel - just rejuvenating across generations.

We need a truely "investigative" reporter in that position.
Tom is sure nice, but he couldn't hurt a fly.

Timmy didn't exactly investigate the run-up to the Iraq War much, so I can't see Brokaw as being worse.

Tom Brokaw is almost the person who might get me to end my boycott of the Sunday morning talk shows.

It would be nice to have questioners who actually knew something about the topics. I am not quite sure that Brokaw is up to it. Russert, Stephanopolis, Gibson, Wallace, Donaldson, Roberts, Will are/were definitely not up to it.

Bill Moyers or Charlie Rose have the intelligence to ask questions that would enhance my knowledge.

Rather than have a panel of regulars, perhaps they ought to pick the panel based on who the guest is.

In any case, I wish they could find people who were smarter and more informed than I am.

Too bad. Another host who will "appear" to ask tough questions, and will always stop short of taking the kill shot.

We need some of that McClatchy newspaper team to host a REAL news talk show. Or, just about any British newsman.

Unfortunately, just more of the same.

It amazes me how some people are trying to pass themselves as MTP fans on here. Every show with Tim Russert was very informative. If you were sleepy while watching the show like d-lo claims, then you need to take your butt to bed early.

I like the fact that Tom Brokaw will take the helm until Nov. election is over. Tom will continue on the tradition of Tim Russert and perhaps go on to become an outstanding moderator.

So much for change. This really is your father's NBC.
They'll have a weekly segment called "Old Irish guys sitting around talking about Jesuits and 'the nuns.'" There will be regular preemptions of real news so that they can replay Tim's memorial service.
They'll bring Rachel Maddow on once in a while so that Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan can snigger at her because she's a lesbian.
It will be everything we thought would be buried in the ground with Timmeh.

Tom Brokaw is one of the problems with MSM, hiring him is like electing John McCain, in some "old way " of thinking he's safe. Too bad, there are some many new voices.

Here's an idea: corral four good journalists; put them behind a desk; put a political figure behind another desk; have the journalists take turns asking questions and following up. In other words, have the politicians actually "meet the press," instead of meeting a host.

It worked on Meet the Press for decades before NBC decided to try the single host approach in the 80s. It would work again.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:07 PM on 06/22/2008

This idea expired - its a format that became TOO boring . . . !!

And that is why Tim Russert suggested that the format change.

Thank you, Tim!

If you put too many boring fat heads together . . . all you get is each one trying to out "talk" and out "impress" - give them 5 minutes at the end of the show only. . . keep the bull**** to a minimum.

That actually sounds awesome.

Have two conservative and two progressive hosts:

Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow as the progressives
David Gregory and (get Chris Wallace to quit FAUX) as the conservatives

Oh, great . . . .

then we can sit around and hear them bicker among themselves - trying to see who can puff their chest out the farthest.

They changed it from that earlier format so that it could become MORE about the topics and the guest, and less about journalist that want their 10 minutes of fame - - - I think Tim was right!
