NEW YORK — Veteran news anchor Tom Brokaw has agreed to moderate NBC's "Meet the Press" through the November election to fill the vacancy created by the death of Tim Russert.

Brokaw will start next week, the network announced Sunday. Anchor Brian Williams did the show this week and announced the decision at its end.

Brokaw first talked to NBC News President Steve Capus about what the network would do when the two men rode a train back to New York from Washington following Russert's funeral and memorial service on Wednesday. Brokaw told him Saturday that he would do it, Capus said.

"I'm just thrilled that Tom has agreed to do this," Capus told The Associated Press.

The decision gives NBC a well-known, authoritative presence at the helm of the broadcast in an election year. "Meet the Press" dominated the Sunday morning ratings under Russert, reportedly earning $60 million in revenue, and Brokaw's presence could blunt any effort by ABC's second-place "This Week" with George Stephanopoulos to cut into the edge.

Brokaw was the nation's most popular news anchor when he stepped down from "Nightly News" following the 2004 election. He has continued to make documentaries for NBC News and was a frequent commentator on MSNBC during primary night coverage this year.

He said he volunteered for the job in part as a tribute to Russert, who died of a heart attack on June 13. The two men were close friends who spoke almost daily and Brokaw gave the opening speech at Russert's Kennedy Center memorial.

"Tim was the first to say that `Meet the Press' was a national treasure and he was a temporary custodian," Brokaw said by phone from Montana. "We both understood the importance of it to the country and to NBC News and he took it to an entirely new level."

Story continues below

He intends to follow Russert's template of aggressive questioning based on research of a guest's public record. The show will continue to be Washington-based, with Betsy Fischer as executive producer.

"Many people have described this election as the election of a lifetime and we're in the thick of it," Capus said. "It just logically makes sense to have someone that the nation knows and the nation trusts with a steady hand."

It also gives NBC News time to study its options before deciding on a successor. Brokaw joked during Russert's memorial service that the Kennedy Center was filled with people interested in the job. David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell and Chris Matthews are considered the top in-house candidates.

Brokaw, 68, wouldn't be the oldest Sunday morning anchor if he decided to stick with it: CBS News' "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer is 71.

However, Brokaw has made it clear the move is temporary, Capus said.

"The plan is for me to be in place until they can find somebody who can take it over on a permanent basis," Brokaw said.

Brokaw had already planned to be a "utility player" in NBC News' convention and election coverage, and is the most likely choice to take the analyst's role beside Williams that Russert once filled. He's already emerged as a voice of caution during opinionated MSNBC coverage with Matthews and Keith Olbermann.

NBC News must also find someone for Russert's job as Washington bureau chief.

Williams' announcement Sunday followed a package of highlights from Wednesday's memorial service. Brokaw last week anchored a "Meet the Press" that was entirely a Russert tribute.

Some critics have accused NBC News of being excessive in its Russert memorializing, but Capus said he's received condolence letters from world leaders and that it was clear Russert had touched people more than typical journalists do. He noted that other networks covered Russert's death extensively and that CBS News placed a full-page condolence ad in The New York Times last week.

"I offer no apologies," he said.

I think with Brokaw the news won't be so slanted. Russert might be nice to his people but he had his head so far up republican butt it was a wonder he could breath.

And his constant slurring and pouncing on Hillary was sickening.

This will only be a good thing if Brokaw remembers what being a good journalist was like BEFORE they all got bought by the MCI-MegaCorporations and became propagandists. In other words, if he forgets what Russert ended up as and goes for the Spivak model. Brokaw could do this, since he doesn't need the job long-term and therefore doesn't have to suck up to stay on. Now, that would be refreshing.

Thank you Tom! And thank you NBC for realizing that Brokaw is the perfect choice for the chair to get us through the elections without Tim's oversight. I was literally cheering when Tom corrected Tweety on a recent results night about the role of the media.... His credibility, honesty, and fairness will be sorely needed as we go through this crucial electoral cycle.

Brokaw is the biggest phoney outside of ABC and Fox.He lost my respect when he assured Bob Costas that Richard Jewell was without doubt the Olympic Bomber, because(get this)the FBI,ATF and Police wouldnt dare release his name if they werent sure that he was the bomber.Olberman was right when he said she was horning in on Baracks night.Obama passed the number of delegates needed to win the primary.Game Over Brokaw you bag of wind. Its hard to forget that he didnt get the uneducated voters when I see her supporters, and Brokaw, cant add.Russert himself said Obama is the Democratic nominee.Tom Brokaw,a souped up Ted Night.

Brokaw will bring stability and much needed sharpness to debate on issues concerning affecting citizens of this country.... We need someone who could ask the tuff Questions to the politicians on both sides so citizens are informed. I still think Tom was ok but not that great at asking the tuff questions expected from Jouranalists of some caliber. He asked mostly foosball questions but once in a while he did better. We need someone who does better every sunday so citizens understand what is happeneing to our country. We are going down the tubes and hurting bad. Thks to Booosh adminstartion who have failed at everything they have touched ...
The new president (whoever it is) has a tuff task ahead to dig out of this deep hole we are in.... Imagine a country as powerful as US with best military, access to best planes, sattelites and billions of $ spent on CIA, FBI & other agnecies could not stop the 911...cuz they could not connect the dots ...& a 2 bit Al Queida with soilders with no shoes, helmets etc manage to do devastation on such scale ... our leaders compunded the error by invading Iraq...
We need journalists who ask the tuff questions so we know what is the truth & what are the lies ...We need to become better informed ...

Amen

I could go along with that if they all didn't give John Mc a free ride and that's all we've seen so far. I do not think Tom will be any different.

Brokaw's running of fumes, mostly his own.

As long as it’s not MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough who appeared to be interviewing for the job on the day after Tim Russert’s passing… I got the strong suspicion that his Republican friends were privately pushing for him to pursue this job… And if ever there were a person who should never replace Russert it is Joe Scarborough.

I stopped watching MTP when no WMDs showed up in IRACK and Russert didn't press Cheney about it. But Good God, Brokaw? Don't they have anybody else? I thought he was put out to pasture long ago.

I'm thoroughly relieved that it's Tom Brokaw.

Judging from Brian Williams' craptakular performance on this mornings' Meet The Press, Brokaw's seasoned experience is welcomed news.

God he (Williams) was horrible. ...." the environmentalists position is that $4 gas is a gift to the american public".
Really Brian.....which environmentalist is that?
...and of all the people to spend a half hour with your head up their ass.....why Lindsey Graham?
NBC couldnt afford to have him on every sunday morning unscripted. His ignorance would damage his cred. as the nightly talking head.
I would say Brokaw couldnt do any worse, but then I saw his horrible doc about 1968. which could have been called " Memories of 68 from a really white guy who wasnt paying attention"

Thank you! I was so disgusted with Williams' patronizing putdowns of Sen. Biden and his (Williams) obsessive nitpicking of Obama's campaign financing decision, his giving Lindsey Graham a full ride to attack in ad hominum terms the presumptive Democratic nominee. The first twenty minutes were devoted to Obama's "flip-flopping" on this issue, without a single reference to McCain's financing switches. Still in the primary season, until the Conventions, McCain is legally held to the financing limits set by the FEC. He has broken those limits and said he was opting out of the public financing (this when he became the presumptive candidate). Even the Republican head of the FEC has said McCain cannot unilaterally opt out, but McC continues to spend over the limits, breaking the law. How much of this did MTP address? No word of any irregularities, much less breaking the law, was mentioned, even by Biden (this would have been a perfect platform for Biden to bring this situation to the main page. The MSN has ignored it so far. Ignorance or laziness? You pick.) I tried to send an email to MTP, but their website only will permit submissions of questions for future shows. I tried the NBC website and drowned in a multipage questionaire about their on-air programming and my watching preferences. I'm no novice at web trekking, but I finally gave up in frustration. At least I can go to HuffPo to vent.

I think the choices were very limited and lacking. Brwnie...who would you have suggested? We have too many egos spouting their own rendition of fair and balanced these days..I wouldn't know who to pick. And I probably won't listen anyway..but I am interested. I know my choices don't fall in the catagory of Mitchell, Wilson, Gregory and Matthews, who is a very loud joke.

Good news. He has the credibility, experience, and appeal to do a fine job. Thanks to NBC for not giving us fly weights like Davvid Gregory or Brian Williams, who have been big time Bush enablers, or Chris Matthews, who would rather listen to himself talk endlessly than listen to his guests.

Well judging by today's performance which is halfway through, he is giving Grahamm a pass on most things.

Biden stated that the oil companies have MILLIONS of acres that they could drill in NOW for oil, but have refused to. Grahamm COMPLETELY ignored that fact and stated that we need oil independence and the only way to get that was to let the American oil companies drill just about anywhere they want to.

Biden said AGAIN, 'Why won't they drill in the millions of acres they already have?'

Grahamm, "We need oil independence and we need to allow off shore drilling at the whim of the oil companies".

Biden "Well then ask the oil companies why they won't drill in the places they already have leasers for?"

Grahamm, "In order for American oil companies to give us independence they need to drill offshore so we can get more oil".

Brokaw.....mumblemumble and refused to get Grahamm to answer that one question.

IF they won't drill where they already have leases, why should they get millions more acres they don't need?

IF Brokaw had simply pushed Grahamm on that, I would have more respect for him but as usual he gave the CONservative a pass to just keep repeating himself.

WHEN are we going to get a moderator/host who won't let anyone just LIE and keep that lie going without calling them on it?
