CNN has released a tribute to George Carlin, specifically his "Seven Words" routine. Ironically, they bleep out the words while discussing how some of them are no longer thought to be be so explosive.

What a reflection of CNN's gutless coverage overall. George Carlin's death is a news story and the words he used that became part of a Supreme Court decision are part of that news, so as such it was CNN's *responsibility* to air them unedited. They could have had a disclaimer beforehand for the lily-livered puritanical types.

The BBC is British government-owned and they air obscenities in their news and entertainment programs. They would not have had any issue airing George's seven words uncensored. It's amazing to me that our country, the one that likes to brag the most about its "freedom," is the one that among Western democracies is among the most restrictive about "obscene" language. At least when the Germans bar certain kinds of language, it's because they do not want to see a revival of Nazism, not because they are catering to a minority of puritanical conservatives.

There's one news precedent for airing an obscenity that I remember well: In September 1991, when Tom Harkin announced his presidential run, Dan Rather's "CBS Evening News" aired this Harkin cry unedited: "When George Herbert Walker Bush says he's for the common man, I have but one word to say to that: Bullshit!"

Doncha jus' love it when establishment bootlickers try to fit in with the cool people. It's like they're so delusional, they forget they're delusional.
