NEW YORK (Reuters) - New mobile phones being developed by Google Inc (GOOG.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and more than 30 partners based on software called Android will arrive in the fourth quarter, a schedule that some cellular carriers and program makers are struggling to meet, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Google had said in November that the phones would come out by the second half of 2008, the Journal reported.

The product is a computer... and it's going to be just fine when it gets here. Google does not need to "bow to pressure" to release the product before it's right, and they understand that perfectly well.

Their strategy is a sensible one: leverage existing open-source technology (as Apple itself largely did), and set your eyes on the prize that is "a computer, not just a phone."

Wall Street needs to keep that in mind. They use their iPhones constantly "because they work." "Of COURSE they work." "They've always worked."

Well, that ain't easy to do, especially the "always" part. So, Google knows perfectly well that they've got to get it "right, really right," BEFORE they start manufacturing hundreds-of-thousands of copies of it.

We'll wait. Apple's iPhone was (and is...) a great opening-move into this new market, and Google's offering promises to up the ante. Exactly as we like "dueling Engineers" to do. Between these two companies, these engineers are one-and-all the best of breed. It'll be worth the wait.

It's still not the phones that make all the difference, but the networks. When will people learn that? That US networks suck has nothing to do with the quality of the phones (which suck, too) but is the result of poor base station coverage. And that won't change until we get higher population densities in play.... or repeal the laws of nature.
