Global Warming

WASHINGTON — Exactly 20 years after warning America about global warming, a top NASA scientist said the situation has gotten so bad that the world's only hope is drastic action.

James Hansen told Congress on Monday that the world has long passed the "dangerous level" for greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and needs to get back to 1988 levels. He said Earth's atmosphere can only stay this loaded with man-made carbon dioxide for a couple more decades without changes such as mass extinction, ecosystem collapse and dramatic sea level rises.

"We're toast if we don't get on a very different path," Hansen, director of the Goddard Institute of Space Sciences who is sometimes called the godfather of global warming science, told The Associated Press. "This is the last chance."

Hansen brought global warming home to the public in June 1988 during a Washington heat wave, telling a Senate hearing that global warming was already here. To mark the anniversary, he testified before the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming where he was called a prophet, and addressed a luncheon at the National Press Club where he was called a hero by former Sen. Tim Wirth, D-Colo., who headed the 1988 hearing.

To cut emissions, Hansen said coal-fired power plants that don't capture carbon dioxide emissions shouldn't be used in the United States after 2025, and should be eliminated in the rest of the world by 2030. That carbon capture technology is still being developed and not yet cost efficient for power plants.

Burning fossil fuels like coal is the chief cause of man-made greenhouse gases. Hansen said the Earth's atmosphere has got to get back to a level of 350 parts of carbon dioxide per million. Last month, it was 10 percent higher: 386.7 parts per million.

Hansen said he'll testify on behalf of British protesters against new coal-fired power plants. Protesters have chained themselves to gates and equipment at sites of several proposed coal plants in England.

"The thing that I think is most important is to block coal-fired power plants," Hansen told the luncheon. "I'm not yet at the point of chaining myself but we somehow have to draw attention to this."

Frank Maisano, a spokesman for many U.S. utilities, including those trying to build new coal plants, said while Hansen has shown foresight as a scientist, his "stop them all approach is very simplistic" and shows that he is beyond his level of expertise.

The year of Hansen's original testimony was the world's hottest year on record. Since then, 14 years have been hotter, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Two decades later, Hansen spent his time on the question of whether it's too late to do anything about it. His answer: There's still time to stop the worst, but not much time.

"We see a tipping point occurring right before our eyes," Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. "The Arctic is the first tipping point and it's occurring exactly the way we said it would."

Hansen, echoing work by other scientists, said that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer.

Longtime global warming skeptic Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., citing a recent poll, said in a statement, "Hansen, (former Vice President) Gore and the media have been trumpeting man-made climate doom since the 1980s. But Americans are not buying it."

But Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., committee chairman, said, "Dr. Hansen was right. Twenty years later, we recognize him as a climate prophet."

What about Inhofe, Bush, Beck and Hannity and the like? They have been spouting that global warming does not exist.......

I see a day in the future, I'm not sure exactly when, but somewhere in Florida there's a bunch of trolls standing waist deep in water arguing about why the sea is six feet higher. Just remember, global warming is a scam invented by shrub-huggers to ruin our way of life because they hate capitalism......

Folks, this is a serious topic deserving your attention.

Here's the take-away: Every small act has an impact. Don't be defeatist. Everything you do to reduce global warming will probably make very good economic sense as well, saving you money, especially in the long term.

Also remember: REDUCE RE-USE RECYCLE
.

Gee it seems the oil industry has their trolls working overtime here. Also I like the new adds I see on TV reminding me that EVERYONE owns the oil companies. (Oops, I mean energy companies) That is if you're a share holder. And the other commercials telling us how much effort they're pulling in to finding alternative sources of energy. When it all goes to s#$% they won't be able to eat their money. I just hope they suffer as much as everyone else. And if there is a God, I hope he makes clowns like James Inhofe suffer twice as much for lining his own pockets and doing nothing about this problem.

Those crticising the fact that Hansen's predictions are based on models don't realize that virtually all engineering is based on models - airplanes, the shuttle, all bridges, buildings, nuclear plants, everything is designed using models. All of Quantum Mechanics is based om models, much of medical prognoses are based on models.

Models is how one applies science.

Granted, because of the large number of variables involved and the highly nonlinear nature of the governing equations, climate change models are very complicated, and their predictions not as certain. However, with data coming from various sources and using the latest measurement techniques, and with improved understanding of how various factors interact, models have continually improved in their predicive accuracy, and verified by "predicting" past events.

Most scientists in the field put higher than 95% confidence in the accuracy of current models (also using sophisticated theory of probability theories and models). Hansen puts it a 99%. That is about as high a probability one can expect in the science of climatology. At this level of probability, model predictions are as close to "fact" as one is going to get.

Hansen is totally justified in giving these warnings. For him to remain silent would be a crime against humanity.

Science is iterative. You observe form a theory, experiment to test the theory then adjust the theory to account for the experiment and repeat the process in continual refinement. Here the model takes the place of the experiment. So we are evaluating a GUESS not experimental data.

Not true. What you do is use the model to "predict" what has already happened and see how good your predictions are. In other words, go back 100 years and try to predict what happened 50 years ago.

NASA's warning that we've had the last chance to affect a change in our runaway destructive global warming is nonsense. We have many more warnings. Let's use them all up and see what happens!

They come out whenever truth might be laid bare.

They're a bit too obvious, really.

If you want to know when you're on the right track, look for the trolls - a large number of them lurking about is a sure sign.

Is no one else troubled by the use of the word "prophet?"

I note how he wants to shut down coal fired electrical generation plants in the US without acknowledging that China is bringin 2 such plants on stream each and every month to say nothing of not pushing for a shift to CO2 and air pollution free nuclear energy.

Read more carefully. His advice is to lead the way in reducing emissions, as we in th US are responsible for most of the CO2 presently in the air today. We did after all lead the industrial revolution. Are you afraid of being a leader? That's what is wrong in this country, we have lost our taste for leadership and adventure. If attitudes like yours continue to prevail, we are truly doomed.

I am not bothered by what words are used to describe predictions based on good scientific models. Call him a "prdictor" if that makes you happy.

Do you have coal consumption figures for China and the U.S.? I am trying to Google, but haven't found any recent figures.

Of course, you must be aware of the nuclear waste issue with nuclear power plants. Also, power plant safety is still a big issue, although not as big as it used to be.

These types have been saying "The End is Near'!! for hundreds of years -- with the end coming in different forms each time.

Al Gore said we had 10 years left a couple of years ago. How about we do nothing and wait 8 or so more years and see what happens. This is just Y2K on steroids.

Actually, I think most of the climate alerts and warnings of impending doom started in the '80s, and were were well presented by Jonathan Weiner's book in 1990. Read it, then tell me this is all a crock.

Global warming is just another nail in the coffin. Over population will dictate our demise long before CO2 related issues really reach out and smack us. The two will create a perfect storm, for sure. Water wars and food shortages will bring about a changes of life that even a cromagnon like yourself will be unable to ignore. I find it all rather amusing.

Y2K wasn't averted by *ignoring* it. A lot of effort and hard work (and expense to *fix* the problem* ) went into making sure nothing big happened that day.

Corporations may be willing to spend big bucks obfuscating and selling out the future of Earth, but losing track of their *money and property cause of a computer glitch?*

Now that, my friends, *scared* them. :)

Jeen-yus' like you know it all before it happens.

There's about a 20 year lag time between what we do now (with CO2) and when it has an effect. This is due to the time it takes for it to rise and have its greatest effect. The ten year comment is probably about right. What does he say would happen?

Gore said, in effect, that irreversible changes would occur roughly by that time if we had not turned the corner and begin a net REDUCTION in CO2. He didn't say the world would explode in 10 years.

Just because you're not educated or smart enough to figure these things out doesn't mean they're not true. Just as you're probably not a good enough engineer to build a sky scraper, you're clearly not a good enough climatologist to figure it out, either. Better listen to the trained professionals - especially the ones with NO FINANCIAL INTEREST in the outcome. (Most climate researchers are tenured professors - they have a guaranteed job and make no more money for being right or wrong.)

Sorry sir you are incorrect. No net warming since '88. Temps are down since 2000. We are also in an unusually low activity sunspot cycle. Looks promising for a maunder minimum type event. That means much cooler not warmer. Also oceans are not warming. His models are wrong on so many points and will be because the system is still far too complicated to model.

Hansen doesn't say his model output is fact. He, like most of our peers, views models as predictors and data analysis tools, just like engineers who build airplanes, buildings, bridges, cars, and all manner of other things. Our models help us first understand the world and then help us predict the future, such as how a building will withstand a strong wind or a bridge survive earthquake. The predictive power of models has been well understood for a long time now in scientific and engineering circles. That the American public is sufficiently uneducated as to produce people who think like you is a pity. But it doesn't change the power of the techniques employed.

And yet the head of the IPCC Rajendra Pachauri has publicly stated that there has been no global warming in the 21st century. see here:

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=525590

And a consensus of scientists (32,000) disagree with the so-called "science" being put forth by Al Gore and the IPCC and Kyoto. See here:

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fpcomment/archive/2008/05/17/32-000-deniers.aspx

and here:

http://www.petitionproject.org/

But because one MAN stands up and claims we are doomed we are to follow him. I am always amazed at the ability of all environmental alarmists to tell the future. If there were actually any true science that could do that then...well...I would like them to accompany me to the lottery kiosk at the mall down the road. We'll split all the winning 50/50.

Your post is rather like that Republican woman author who figured out that if you give citations to your statements, people are a lot more likely to believe you., especially since nearly nobody actually goes to read the sources. The idea here is that if you cite a source, and they're credible, people believe without verification. So, she began quoting VERY credible sources for her statements, but said the opposite of what her sources really were saying. She got found out and is now a laughing stock. ...Umm... Ann Coulter? I'm not sure - I never read her "work."

Your citations are EXACTLY like that: You're saying the opposite thing than your sources actually say.
