Crain's Chicago Business:

United Airlines is planning to cut about 950 pilot positions, or about 14%, over the next 18 months as it grounds about 100 aircraft.

United already has announced plans to cut about 1,500 white-collar jobs as it tries to slash its U.S. flight capacity about 14% by the end of the year amid record fuel costs.

We need to Nationalize the American Airlines..

It's stupid all these different companies and the games they play...

There are so many benefits to Nationalizing them into one functioning entity and it will end senseless overlapping flights save fuel and increase safety vastly of course we really must require all maintenance be done in America and not the third world nations as is going on now to save money...

There can still be smaller independent regional short hop airlines, but the big national and international Airlines need to be Nationalize for our safety and productivity..

Wonder what cuts, if any, the CEO's are taking in this industry? More than likely, NONE!
Our capitalist society is breaking at the seams to support greedy, corrupt, and outright criminal behavior by those at the top. The less fortunate who are not in management get the shaft.

Meanwhile, spending cuts in rail transportation by this administration have to be addressed as well.

Congrats, GWB, you have achieved goal of destroying our economy and have fufilled the neocon dream of creating a two class society..

It's time.

With fuel prices out of control as they are, and currency values in free-fall, it's time.

There must be one government-owned airline in America: let's call it "Aeroflot."

One government-owned trucking company. One government-owned railroad.

All cheerfully paid-for by money that is borrowed from nowhere.

Sounds like a wonderful future to me. What astonishing planning and foresight. What love of country...

It's getting ugly in the airline industry. I'll be surprised if one of the major carriers doesn't go out of business in the next 18 months.

President Reagan told us that government was not the solution; government was the problem as he defanged the regulatory agencies of former prudent administrations. Now we have a transportation system in choas and on the verge of bankruptcy, an out of control energy system that is under the heel of speculators; a telecommunications system that charges what the market will bear; a health-care system that is the most wasteful, inefficient redundancy in the industrialized world, a manufacturing and retail system that is dominated by gigantic monopolies; a banking system that is bankrupted and a media that is dominated by a few individuals, including anti-democratic foreigners.
Regulation of naturally performing monopolies as a topic of discussion is taboo as insiders and speculators extract and extort the last remaining dollars out of our fearful and broken citizentry. There is no precedent for the economic rapine and pillage of a once most powerful economic and monetary system. The silence of discussion is most ominous as events are beginning to surge out of control of any decision making process to channel them.

As a cost cutting measure the all planes will be flown by the travelers, alternating of course so they do not get fatigue.

Getting rid of those bothersome those little passengers and employees that cost money is how they do it. That's how the CEO's justify their $350 million dollar bonuses too Wall Street. Nothing gives little suspender-snapping MBA's a hard-on more than cutting costs. That and fire-sale bankruptcies.

The gate agents are rude, the flight attendants are barely friendly, the pilots are the only decent people United has. (That interact with the public at least)

United has slashed benefits, slashed salaries - everyone has taken huge paycuts......except the mutiple incompetent CEO's who have robbed the place blind with no repercussions.

Based on the way they treat the public this Airline deserves to go out of business and let someone else take a crack at it.

Less flights, less planes, less pilots. Makes perfect sense. And United, again, shafts their employees. Makes perfect sense, too.
