COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement's biggest names, James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a "fruitcake interpretation" of the Constitution.

The criticism, to be aired Tuesday on Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program, comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization's headquarters here, said Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family.

The conservative Christian group provided The Associated Press with an advance copy of the pre-taped radio segment, which runs 18 minutes and highlights excerpts of a speech Obama gave in June 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal. Obama mentions Dobson in the speech.

"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy _ chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application."

"Folks haven't been reading their Bibles," Obama said.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus' teachings in the New Testament.

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said.

"... He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."

Joshua DuBois, director of religious affairs for Obama's campaign, said in a statement that a full reading of Obama's speech shows he is committed to reaching out to people of faith and standing up for families. "Obama is proud to have the support of millions of Americans of faith and looks forward to working across religious lines to bring our country together," DuBois said.

Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama's argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion's terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

He said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the "lowest common denominator of morality," labeling it "a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution."

"Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?" Dobson said. "What he's trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe."

The program was paid for by a Focus on the Family affiliate whose donations are taxed, Dobson said, so it's legal for that group to get more involved in politics.

Last week, DuBois, a former Assemblies of God associate minister, called Minnery for what Minnery described as a cordial discussion. He would not go into detail, but said Dubois offered to visit the ministry in August when the Democratic National Convention is in Denver.

A possible Obama visit was not discussed, but Focus is open to one, Minnery said.

McCain also has not met with Dobson. A McCain campaign staffer offered Dobson a meeting with McCain recently in Denver, Minnery said. Dobson declined because he prefers that candidates visit the Focus on the Family campus to learn more about the organization, Minnery said.

Dobson has not backed off his statement that he could not in good conscience vote for McCain because of concerns over the Arizona senator's conservative credentials. Dobson has said he will vote in November but has suggested he might not vote for president.

Obama recently met in Chicago with religious leaders, including conservative evangelicals. His campaign also plans thousands of "American Values House Parties," where participants discuss Obama and religion, as well as a presence on Christian radio and blogs.

I want to call James Dobson a false prophet and a political actor, but I won't. it seems obvious that he is struggling to remain relevant, which is sad. He needs to surrender to the Savior he purports to represent.

How else would anyone be able to believe a lot of the crap in the Bible unless it was distorted?

The Sermon on the mount, according to Dob son:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they shall gain the megachurch.

Blessed are they which hunger for power, for they shall inherit the department of defense.

Blessed are the warmakers, for they shall be called the children of the Neocons.

I have made similar arguments to my elder relatives (hope i don't ruin their vision of Heaven).. that the Bible is full of contradictions when taken as a whole. Even chapters contradict themselves, i.e., two Eves in Genesis? In the first instance God creates Eve AT THE SAME TIME as Adam, and then later Eve is born of Adam's Rib?

I think Dobson is the pot calling Obama black.

Here's the deal. Dobson distorts the Bible to facilitate his own hateful views. I don't want to be any part of the "family" he is focus.

Out of the mouths of FALSE PROPHETS comes many many lies in the name of religion. I listen to Dobson the same as I listen to Karl Roves. NONE.

Well, if anyone would know a thing or two about distorting the Bible, it would be Dobson. He does it every day of his life.

""I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said."

The duplicity of everything Dobson posits is found in this single statement. Surely, the missionary work that usually preceded colonization of the land of other people was a distortion but I am sure Mr. Dobson would not see it that way.

Why would people take Mr. Dobson to be an authority on anything other than his own self-interest? I cannot understand why. I call Mr. Obama on hypocrisy and I am calling Dobson on his. Dobson accuses of the very thing he is guilty of -- interpretation. Who decides the traditional view? Who defines the word of God -- certainly not feeble people? People have a hard time interpreting their own words, are we to believe mere people know God's will when a search of history shows numerous cases of men and women distorting the perceived word of God to fit their distorted and confused theology.

There are valid and righteous members of the clergy. More than a preacher Dobson appears to be a politician and just under his comment is a tinge of something else. What does he mean by “confused”? Is that a sly reference to Barack Obama’s documented coming of age in America? Dobson is confusing because he distorts. You do not know what to believe. People claiming to know God should speak with more clarity when they tell us God’s will.

The old guard seems to be withering away in every way, media ( russert, rather, buckley) political leaders
(kennedy specter) even spiritual leaders ( dobson Jerry Falwell sharpton) Whether they are here or they passed on people are looking or being lead to new leadership in every way. It seems their opinions are less valuable or maybe it's another shift in the social evolution.

dam all change make me thirty.

Here is the problem, Mr. Dobson. You are not a Constitutional scholar and your intention to enforce my faith for me appalls the heck out of me. I don't need an old grey-haired man enforcing my faith. Should I find myself pregnant and my own life or health is at risk, it is up to ME to practice my own faith. We do not live in the dark ages and it is no longer somebody else's prerogative to come to me and tell me how to practice my own religious faith. I do not believe in abortion. And should I find myself in a horrible dilemma, it will be God who sees me through that choice and neither you, Mr. Dobson, nor anyone else of your ilk should have anything to do with that decision. And Senator Obama is quite correct -- do read the Sermon on the Mount sometime, Mr. Dobson. You might find it quite enlightening.

Everyone needs to know what the bible says for themselves. We we rely on others, such as Dobson to form our views of the bible and christianity, we lose. I used to respect Dobson, but now I just see him as another political surrogate. Is the IRS investigating his status?

Assuming that English is the language in which you would read the bible, which version should you rely on (there are many to choose from). This is actually a trick question, because the answer is none of them. The problem is that no person who is not well versed in the languages in which the text of the Bible was originally written can gain a full appreciation of its meaning for him/herself. They must rely on those who do have the proper knowledge to assist them, though one should use due diligence in choosing such a mentor, as one would in selecting a physician or an attorney. Wrong choices in any of these cases can lead to advserse outcomes.

The U.S. Constitution says, if I recall correctly, that there shall be no religious test imposed to qualify for holding office or exercising the franchise in this country. We are engaged at present in the process of choosing a civil chief magistrate, not a high priest. Individual citizens should evaluate the candidates according to their perceptions of their political positions, competency, and character. If some believe that this includes consideration of a candidate's professed religious beliefs, that is their right - but beware of unidimensional litmus tests. Realistically, it is a near impossibility to truly know the real character of someone you are well-acquainted with, much less a public figure enveloped in a cloud of "spin" exhaled by both friend and foe.

Dobson has always confused religion with religionism, which is described in the dictionary as:
1. excessive or exaggerated religious zeal.
2. affected or pretended religious zeal.

How do people like that gain credibility? It's beyond me.

Anyone who doesn't read the bible in its original Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek is a sissy. How do you really know what they meant if you can't read it in the original language?

There you go. And the closest interpretation of the Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek is the King James Version of old.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:16 PM on 06/24/2008

Actually, the King James version is very distorted. King James wanted poetry, and was perfectly happy to toss accuracy out the window to get it.

A better bet if you're concerned about what the Bible *really* says is the Anchor Bible. It is massive -- something like 38 volumes. But it was a scholarly undertaking, started in 1964, that actually did go back to the original Aramaic, Hebrew and Greek. It's like one-third Biblical text and two-thirds footnotes, with detailed explanations of how a particular word could be interpreted in different ways. My parents bought the first maybe 15 volumes, so I was exposed to it during those all-important formative years. And people wonder why I'm such a geek. :-)

The author (Ephraim Avigdor Speiser) was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and one of the world's most respected experts on Semitic languages. While something of an iconoclast, he was not irreligious. In his introduction, he wrote that he "is not motivated by mere pedantry...but by the hope that each new insight may bring us that much closer to the secret of the Bible's universal and enduring appeal."

Of course, a Bible like this is pretty useless for solely evangelical purposes -- no sound bites. :-)

The New American Standard Bible, publiblished by The Lockman Foundation, has the reputation of being the most accurate word for word (as close as possible in a translation) to the original manuscripts. One can get study Bible versions of this with footnotes as well.

The King James is still a pretty decent translation, and doesn't seriously change the meaning of passages. The New International Version is a very popular translation that tries to bridge the gap between word for word, which can be awkward at times, and a thought for thought translation like the Living Bible which is more prone to distortion.
