COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement's biggest names, James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a "fruitcake interpretation" of the Constitution.

The criticism, to be aired Tuesday on Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program, comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization's headquarters here, said Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family.

The conservative Christian group provided The Associated Press with an advance copy of the pre-taped radio segment, which runs 18 minutes and highlights excerpts of a speech Obama gave in June 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal. Obama mentions Dobson in the speech.

"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy _ chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application."

"Folks haven't been reading their Bibles," Obama said.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus' teachings in the New Testament.

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said.

Story continues below

"... He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."

Joshua DuBois, director of religious affairs for Obama's campaign, said in a statement that a full reading of Obama's speech shows he is committed to reaching out to people of faith and standing up for families. "Obama is proud to have the support of millions of Americans of faith and looks forward to working across religious lines to bring our country together," DuBois said.

Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama's argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion's terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

He said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the "lowest common denominator of morality," labeling it "a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution."

"Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?" Dobson said. "What he's trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe."

The program was paid for by a Focus on the Family affiliate whose donations are taxed, Dobson said, so it's legal for that group to get more involved in politics.

Last week, DuBois, a former Assemblies of God associate minister, called Minnery for what Minnery described as a cordial discussion. He would not go into detail, but said Dubois offered to visit the ministry in August when the Democratic National Convention is in Denver.

A possible Obama visit was not discussed, but Focus is open to one, Minnery said.

McCain also has not met with Dobson. A McCain campaign staffer offered Dobson a meeting with McCain recently in Denver, Minnery said. Dobson declined because he prefers that candidates visit the Focus on the Family campus to learn more about the organization, Minnery said.

Dobson has not backed off his statement that he could not in good conscience vote for McCain because of concerns over the Arizona senator's conservative credentials. Dobson has said he will vote in November but has suggested he might not vote for president.

Obama recently met in Chicago with religious leaders, including conservative evangelicals. His campaign also plans thousands of "American Values House Parties," where participants discuss Obama and religion, as well as a presence on Christian radio and blogs.

Can I just say how much I despise charlatans, heretics and blasphemers like Dobson, that twist and prevert my religion and exploit good people of faith by bilking them out of their money and more heinously, corrupt their souls by spreading hate in the name of Jesus Christ.

Apparently Mr. Dobson 'Can't Recall' the book of Matthew, or what is written in chapter 6, verse 5 - And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the HYPOCRITES : for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward.

You see - the right and religious right don't know how to handle Obama - he is smarter than them, is a scholar on the Constitution and can sermonize with the best of them. I really think that religious people will gravitate toward Obama because he emotes Christian values and his family is wonderful. This has those like Dobson completely freaked out. The more they attack Obama the stronger he gets.

I am an Obama, supporter but unfortunately he was distorting the bible. Leviticus, nor any other book in the bible supports slavery as we(Americans) know it. It was a different time and a different culture. Being a slave in that time was closer to indentured servitude.

I will also disagree by saying that there is no such thing as Dobson Christianity or Sharpton Christianity...There is only Christianity....that's the problem with modern religion, people choose to manipulate the bible to fit how they want to live...that's why there is over 300 man made denominations of "Christianity" while there was only ONE church in the Bible...(fyi there is only one church still)

However, whether you are a believer in the Bible/Christianity...it matters not...because if you do believe in the Bible you know that God gives us free will. It isn't your job as a Christian to FORCE others to believe how you believe....that's why I am a Liberal. Yes I am a Christian, but its not my job to stop people from marrying who they want to marry.

If you don't believe, or have your own take on what/who God is...that's the beauty of America it doesn't matter!

A true Christian will try and help the sick, the poor, the oppressed and fight against the social injustices of this world. That was what Jesus did.

Dobson, Falwell, Robertson, Parsley, and all these TV evangelist have done nothing on what Jesus said to do. Yet these very people say that they know the Bible more than anyone else.

These people are the religious right. They have aligned themselves with the republican party. They teach a hateful, divided, and fearful on what the Bible is about. Yet people seem to believe that they are the true Christians of American.

To all those that watch these TV evangelists, I just want to say they are teaching a false message of the Bible. Their constant showboating and pleading for money is what drives them.

I'm a Christian and I can't stand these evangelist. I don't want my Christian values held hostage by these right wing nutjobs. I'm voting for Obama, who is the real Christian among this group.

Well, if someone is going to criticize Brother Neo's interpretation of the Bible, shouldn't we insist that at least the critic is a real Christian?

Brother Dobson for all his blatherings really doesn't meet this requirement.

Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

James Dobson is the living embodiment of these words.

The "OLD Testament" is the "PHYSICAL" relationship between God and man, while the New Testament is the 'SPIRITUAL' relationship between God and man. Like so many, Mr. Dobson may be well intentioned, but check out II Samuel, Chp. 6, verses 6 & 7, to understand what happens to the "well intentioned", yet disobedient, righteous. In my judgement, those who condemm others to "The Lake of Fire," (Hell is not a permanent place,) deny the power of the blood of Jesus. They are actually saying that "sin" is greater than the POWER of Jesus to forgive ALL sin, except the "Unpardonable Sin, which is the sin committed by Lucifer which is why he was not forgiven. The word "Satan" means "Adversary," the name is still, "Lucifer." "Hell" is a temporary place according to the book of Revelation, Chp. 20, verse 14, which says that "Hell" will be cast into the "Lake of Fire." Sin is sin; greed, envy, opression, lying, stealing, etc., "All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God, and thank God, the blood of Jesus has covered them ALL, except one. Paul admonishes us in 11Timothy. verse 15. to "Study to show thyself approved...The Holy Spirit is the greatest Teacher.

PHARISEE DOBSON, This guy is so literal in his interpretation, he thinks blacks are descended from Ham and should be enslaved. Look he is the chief spokesperson for the "agents of intolerance." This guy is so afraid of losing access to the White House and influencing the secular policies of the government. He wants in on the fight so he can at least leave the WH in the "right" hands (wink, nod).

First and most important - Dobson IS NOT an "ordained minister". Second - Dobson does not have any right to tell any other American what to do or believe.

Dobson is a freak - using religion to try to have control over suckers that follow him.

His is not an ordained minister - got it.

The ideology of conservatism is completely anti-christian. Conservatism is against everything the bible claims Jesus said. There is absolutely nothing in the new testament that supports anything any conservative says without twisting it completely out of context. No individual who claims to be a christian can be a republican. The two are mutually exclusive. All conservatives are hypocrites. They will lie, cheat, steal, and do anything they can to gain power for their "movement." They are among the most evil and vile people on the planet.
It's sad really. These otherwise intelligent human beings allow themselves to be led by the nose by idiot preachers who care nothing for truth, justice, or god. They just want power.

James Dobson version of Christianity is not Christian at all. Its influenced heavily by conservative values which runs opposite to what the new testaments states. Dobson, Robertson, Falwell, Hagee, Parsley, and all those loud mouth, spit talking TV evangelicals would nail Jesus on the cross once again if he ever came back today.

James Dobson, read your Bible. Jesus told you to "love your enemies."
Why don't you follow the teachings of Jesus "To LOVE one another"?
