COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement's biggest names, James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a "fruitcake interpretation" of the Constitution.

The criticism, to be aired Tuesday on Dobson's Focus on the Family radio program, comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization's headquarters here, said Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family.

The conservative Christian group provided The Associated Press with an advance copy of the pre-taped radio segment, which runs 18 minutes and highlights excerpts of a speech Obama gave in June 2006 to the liberal Christian group Call to Renewal. Obama mentions Dobson in the speech.

"Even if we did have only Christians in our midst, if we expelled every non-Christian from the United States of America, whose Christianity would we teach in the schools?" Obama said. "Would we go with James Dobson's or Al Sharpton's?" referring to the civil rights leader.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy _ chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, "a passage that is so radical that it's doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application."

"Folks haven't been reading their Bibles," Obama said.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus' teachings in the New Testament.

"I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology," Dobson said.

Story continues below

"... He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter."

Joshua DuBois, director of religious affairs for Obama's campaign, said in a statement that a full reading of Obama's speech shows he is committed to reaching out to people of faith and standing up for families. "Obama is proud to have the support of millions of Americans of faith and looks forward to working across religious lines to bring our country together," DuBois said.

Dobson reserved some of his harshest criticism for Obama's argument that the religiously motivated must frame debates over issues like abortion not just in their own religion's terms but in arguments accessible to all people.

He said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the "lowest common denominator of morality," labeling it "a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution."

"Am I required in a democracy to conform my efforts in the political arena to his bloody notion of what is right with regard to the lives of tiny babies?" Dobson said. "What he's trying to say here is unless everybody agrees, we have no right to fight for what we believe."

The program was paid for by a Focus on the Family affiliate whose donations are taxed, Dobson said, so it's legal for that group to get more involved in politics.

Last week, DuBois, a former Assemblies of God associate minister, called Minnery for what Minnery described as a cordial discussion. He would not go into detail, but said Dubois offered to visit the ministry in August when the Democratic National Convention is in Denver.

A possible Obama visit was not discussed, but Focus is open to one, Minnery said.

McCain also has not met with Dobson. A McCain campaign staffer offered Dobson a meeting with McCain recently in Denver, Minnery said. Dobson declined because he prefers that candidates visit the Focus on the Family campus to learn more about the organization, Minnery said.

Dobson has not backed off his statement that he could not in good conscience vote for McCain because of concerns over the Arizona senator's conservative credentials. Dobson has said he will vote in November but has suggested he might not vote for president.

Obama recently met in Chicago with religious leaders, including conservative evangelicals. His campaign also plans thousands of "American Values House Parties," where participants discuss Obama and religion, as well as a presence on Christian radio and blogs.

dear mr dobson, as a Christian who considers eiljah and john the baptist and joseph the greaterst roll modesl (just so you know where i'm coming from) i want to call YOU a hypocrit --- one who distorts the word of God --- simply because you support people like reagan and bush. if you dio not have the power of discernment needed to see what vipers and hypocrites they are, you have no business and no right to preach the word of God, let alone speak for God. I pray someone prints this message up and hands it to you.

If you don't advocate stoning the entire administration to death, you are distorting the bible.

We shouldn't listen to the editor of "The Harvard Law Review" about matter of Constitutional law because he has a "fruitcake" interpretation of the Constitution?. I guess Dobson would know a thing or two about fruitcakes since most of the leadership of "Focus on the Family" are bona-fide fruitcakes and child molesters to boot!

And Obama is a heretic because he reads the Old Testament?
And the Priesthood (or whatever) has become experts in Constitutional Law?

Kinda tells you who the real fruitcake is...
(PS - it's not the former Editor of the Harvard Law Review, who taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago...)

Hey Rev. Stick to dogging McBush. You're much better at that. Since neither the Republican nor Democrat meets your high standards, you can vote for Barr in November. OK?

The only fruit cake in this scenerio is Dobson(The Old Testament - in Genesis God gave Choice). In order for most religious leaders to maintain power the can't afford anyone to perhaps be smarter than them. Thus they can't afford the Bible to be seen within a historical context, and like Obama speech on Race, most Religious leaders view the Bible and it's teaching as static, selecting teachings that speak to their own intolerance. In the New Testament, Jesus teaches mercy and tolerance..."he without sin cast first stone." (dah, we are all sinners except for Dobson). The problem with most religious leaders like Dobson...is that they truly believe their own sense of righteousness and therefore, use their words as hammers, instead of what it was truly called to do which is to comfort and serve mankind. Religious leaders like Dobson are no longer in the save business they are in the Power business and anyone that doesn't bow down to their interpretation of the Bible is a "fruit cake". Their influence on George Bush's current foreign policies, is never more clear and their desire to hold onto to it.

Speaking as a Christian, no one distorts the Bible more then Dobson and his kind of so called Christians. The Bible speaks of helping the poor and sick more then any other topic in the Bible, yet that all seems to be something he hasn't read.

Nowhere does the Bible mention tax cuts for the wealthy, etc.

In fact, Jesus states that it is harder for a rich man to get into heaven than a camel through the eye of a needle. I can only speculate how hard it will be for a man to get into heaven who has become rich and famous by selling his interpretation of the word of God.

How true- Dobson and his ilk distort the Bible in order to benefit themselves. Their narrow interpretations of the Bible are based primarily on how well they advance their ministries (i.e. bank accounts). Anyone with a differing interpretation is a heathen doomed to spend eternity within the firey pits of hell. Dobson is merely a propogandist with a self serving agenda.

This just gets better and better.

This is what Barack wants....

LOL !

A small minded, bigot who uses the bible as a bludgeon needs to shut his trap.

Someone want to explain to me why this is a top story on AP and other news outlets? I don't want a preacher in the White House. What we need is a leader, someone who will be President of ALL THE PEOPLE, not just the ones who voted for him.

Barack Obama is not a preacher, and considers his faith personal. He does not condemn other faiths. He is a scholar of the US Constitution who lectured on it at the University of Chicago Law School, and will be guided by it and by separation of church and state in his presidency. He is standing up and taking on the Christian bigots by refusing to allow them a vacuum into which to move to recruit Christian voters to support John McCain. He is pointing out that for Christians who wish to follow Jesus, and serve the least of our brethren (the homeless, poor, disabled and unemployed), his Democratic candidacy will uphold that aspect of their Christian values, and though he will be a secular president, he will not disrespect their Christian values.

And in related stories, the priests of Zeus cry "foul!" over Obama's lack of burnt offerings on the campaign trail, while Concerned Citizens for Osiris are outraged over the campaign's complete disregard for including human sacrifices in public appearances.Oh, that's right. We outgrew the previous round of angry thunder-hurlers and lords of death. They are irrelevant to discussions of American politics.

When, I wonder, will the selfish, brutish, homicidal, bearded white man with a childishly nasty temper and incredibly bad aim also be placed on the "Interesting, Pre-Modern Myths of the Mediterranean Peoples" shelf where all of the other anthropomorthic fantasies now rest? We have issues to wrestle with, and decisions to be made by grown-ups. Put your invisible chums away, kids, and come talk about energy and the environment and the economy and the wars in the world.

Someone who uses the Bible to justify child abuse should really not be throwing stones... REALLY... I REALLY... MEAN... IT...

A truly civilized country would already have thrown Dobson in jail for advocating the violent, senseless, brutal molestation of children.

And uses it to supress critical thinking and promote dogma...not exactly focusing on the future of a family and it's ability to handle the constantly changing world is it?
