McCain Staffer Turns His Candidate Into A Joke The Whole Internet Can Enjoy

Okay. This is a little bit complicated to explain. Also: boring. So here's the short version. This week, there was this conference called the Personal Democracy Forum, or PDF, and at the PDF there was a panel discussion - on internet stuff! - like Twitter and, uhm...PDFs. And junk.

Anyway, at this panel, Mark Soohoo, who is ostensibly part of John McCain's "internet team" was explaining to the assembled that despite the outward appearance that McCain hasn't learned how to use Google - and is thus still unaware that his campaign's BFF Charlie Black has this annoying hobby of repping for bloodthirsty dictators - the candidate has plenty of what we used to call "computer literacy." But then: DAG! Here comes blogger (and former John Edwards internet director) Tracy Russo, gettin' all up in Soohoo's grill, funnin' on McCain! That led Soohoo to utter these immortal words, "John McCain is aware of the internet." As it turns out, that dovetailed a little too closely with "I am aware of all Internet traditions" - another joke that Wonkette had recently catapulted into the online political conversation. And now, a perfect storm of meme is born.

So there you have it. McCain's internet guy got PWNED at a conference, yes, but it would be unfair for this incident to come to be known as the moment where people realized that McCain didn't know how to use a computer. That moment came last week, when John McCain yelled at Barack Obama for having a powerful social network of campaign donors who used the internet to create a new and innovative method of public campaign finance, while John McCain is stuck trying to raise money with a bundle of pointed sticks and some cave paint.

My 93 year old great-grandmother is also aware of the internet.
This does not mean that she has ever used it or understands it, however.
To be aware means to know it exists, nothing more.

It isn't necessarily an age thing. My 80 year old mom is an internet whiz. I'm 57 and my 23 year old neighbor come to me for help with her computer. You CAN be old and technologically savvy - John McCain is just old and the epitome of being out of touch.

hey I grandm/pa who's becomeing computor literate. It takes time and understanding to teach these stuck in the past wonderful old people what/how/when/where on the internet. If Mccain don't know the internet, he can't even come here to huffo and read what we say about him! how can he change if he never learns the new technology. You can teach old dogs new tricks, but the old dogs got to want to learn first! If he's to darn lazy, or dumb and can't learn--------------Than by all means don't give the dog any thing hard or difficult to do in the future. I hope you're just joking. Gore never said he invented the Internet. This is one of those cases where the media perpetuated a lie until it became the "truth". He said he played a part in helping the Internet get started. Which is true since he championed bills that enabled the idea of the Internet to migrate from Academia and Defense and into the mainstream.

Had you asked me to predict the future of technology when I was a child, never would I have imagined a device no longer than my hand that would carry 7,000 songs--my entire music collection--with me wherever I go or that a friend could write from Vienna in the middle of the nght and her message would reach me instantaneously. And never would I have imagined the Internet or the effects it would have upon an entire generation of Americans; how it would make the world a smaller place and empower ordinary people to band together and share knowledge and ideas.

The Internet made Barack Obama possible. The Internet has changed forever how we learn, educate, govern, do business. I'm 56 years old and I regret that I will not be here 50 years from now to see how the Internet has continued to change the world.

You can't have a grass-roots movement without a grass-roots ability to communicate. Ordinary citizens joining together to demand more of a voice requires the ability for large groups of people to communicate and empower themselves with knowledge. I just love it!
