SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is asking California members to join the effort to amend that state's constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

A letter sent to Mormon bishops and signed by church president Thomas S. Monson and his two top counselors calls on Mormons to donate "means and time" to the ballot measure. A note on the letter dated June 20 says it should be read during church services on June 29, but the letter was published Saturday on several Web sites.

Church spokesman Scott Trotter said Monday that the letter was authentic. He declined further comment, saying the letter explains the church's reasons for getting involved.

The LDS church will work with a coalition of churches and other conservative groups that put the California Marriage Protection Act on the Nov. 4 ballot to assure its passage, the letter states.

In May, California's Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, saying gays could not be denied marriage licenses.

"The church's teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and the formation of families is central to the Creator's plan for His children," the four-paragraph letter states.

"We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to ensure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman," church leaders say in the letter. "Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage."

California Mormons _ there are more than 750,000, according to a church almanac _ have heard and heeded similar calls from their leaders before.

In 2000, a letter from the pulpit asked members to give time and money in support of Proposition 22, a ballot measure prohibiting California from legally recognizing gay marriages performed outside the state. It passed but was later struck down by the courts.

The LDS church also fought same-sex marriage legislation in other states during the 1990s. As recently as 2006, it signed a letter to Congress seeking an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

The latest letter is a disappointment to members of Affirmation, an international support group for gay, lesbian and transgender Mormons. Last month, Affirmation called on the church not to meddle in California politics.

"This initiative will hurt so many people," executive director W. Olin Thomas said in a statement Monday. "The California law affects civil marriage; it has no effect on any religious institution or official."

Affirmation leaders are scheduled to meet with the head of LDS Family Services, a church social services agency, in August to begin a conversation meant to bridge the divide between Mormonism and gay members hurt by church teachings that homosexuality is a sin.

It will be the first meeting between any arm of the church and Affirmation, which was formed in secret in the 1970s by students at the church-owned Brigham Young University in Provo.

"We're not going to let this stand in the way," Affirmation spokesman David Melson said. "The church has said they are open to finding new avenues and new solutions to minister to gay members, and we are taking them at their word."

When you look at it, the arguments dealing with gay marriage are remarkably similar to the arguments against interracial marriage ( Loveing V. Virginia). And since Mormons have given up on the parts of their very special book dealing the claim black people are pigmented as such because they have been burned by the devil, they're bound to have the sense to turn on this one.... far far in the future..

but still, I don't understand why a person would lift a solitary finger to destroy another person's happiness because they receive it from things that that person might not agree with or understand... Although, if this passes and that's the one of these new american norms, let's lobby to get rid of Nascar.

...I really hope there are more homosexuals than Nascar fans.

Why are gays wrong, but sexually assaulting your own children is acceptable?

There is a separation between church and state for a reason. At it's worst, religion can be downright ugly.

Mormons enjoy the freedom to worship as they choose. The key word is choice, isn't it? As we've witnessed over the last 7.5 years, religion has been a political tool, used and abused by charlatan politicians who want nothing more than to kill freedom for control, and freedom of choice is the favorite target.

Part 1
I was raised 17 years as a Mormon child...
I retained my childlike Spiritual Nature that questioned Organized Religion... I no longer agree with Organized Religion... Spirituality is about seeking to understand the Godly Nature ALL Life IS... Organized Religion is about Man controlling Mankind...
Root source of the word, SIN, I like best, is separation... To (Mentally) Belief separate, from the Godly Nature of ALL Life... Organized Religion teaches a God/Allah separated from Mankind... By "God/Allah "religiously" judging/threatening a Soul/Spirit, Organized Religion scares/controls the "flock"... Think sheepdog barking and scaring the sheep into flocking (they have the power to simply trample the dog)...
Question: Would a Supreme Creator need worshipped? What of a Soul/Spirit already created of Eternal Godly Nature? (What threat for control then?) Organized Religion preaches Love, but practices Fear and Control... Also, a belief in being "right"... Right/Wrong being a taught Religious Fact, NOT an actual Perception of Belief... Both Christianity and Muslims claiming "Right" as their Fact of course and willing to kill the "Wrongs", as their God/Allah is also willing to do... Think Threat = Control...
Organized Religion in General is the # 1 teacher of "sin"... (think separation) Gay/Lesbian is Religiously Labeled/Proclaimed as separate/ abnormal... As "Wrong"... Yet is a Natural behavior/function of Godly Created Natural Life...

Out of curiosity, what was it that made you come to this mindset and leave the Mormon Faith? Was it a specific event, did you gradually lose faith due to exposure to outside ideas, did you never REALLy buy it to begin with? What was your tipping point?

Part 2
Some species are Godly Created Male and female, Naturally... They can sexually procreate their species... Yet Organized Religion teaches God/Allah opposes that??? Organized Religion needs people "blinded by Belief" to Control them...
Scientific observation of the animal species in Fact and Deed shows Godly Created Natural Homosexuality... Did the Organized Religion God/Allah make a mistake? God/Allah did "Wrong"? O.M...... ummm goodness... LOL... To believe in the Biblical God, well, that God created all Life, Plants, Tees, Flowers, Animals etc, Male and/or Female... Then created an IT named Adam and put IT all alone, in a huge Garden... (WHAT?) Without Female, there can be only an IT, not a Male...
Then this God noticed, oops, I forgot to create a female like I did for all other Life... But, (hard to type with head shaking) God, who created the whole Cosmos, forgot how to do Female Human from scratch, so he knocked his (IT) Adam out and took part of him and created a Female... My Childlike mind, Spiritually says, WHAT??? Then, sometime later, God supposedly declared sexual relations, no matter how loving, between to males, or two females of Godly Nature, "WRONG"... WHAT??? This the same God who created dual sex, sex procreating creatures? This the same God who made sexual relations, pleasure enabled? I, God, Declare my Nature "Wrong/Bad/Un-natural???
Seems to me Organized Religion needs a God/Allah, but what use is Organized Religion to God/Allah???

I think what they are trying to say is marriage is between a man and a woman, and a woman, and a woman, and a woman, and a woman, a girl or two, and another woman.

Why are they afraid of gay marriage? Why is anyone afraid of gay marriage? I do not understand it.

You mean, to define marriage as being between a man and a little girl, right?

Shouldn't the letter say that they consider marriage as, between a man and several women, and age does not matter?

This is why Obama needs to fight for us. People are tired of these ignorant fundies calling the shots. A president who stood up to them instead of pandering to them would win in a landslide.

Obama doesn't support gay marriage either. He support civil unions, the separate-but-equal arrangement that demeans families more than a departure from "traditional" marriage does.

The heterosexual supremacists just won't quit, will they?

They are sooooo offended that the Court says marriage is a right, not a privilege. That means they aren't as special as they imagined themselves to be.

Disgusting. At least Mormons don't murder queers as often as they used to - but that's not nearly enough, is it?

The Mormons have 13 Articles of Faith, the 11th being: We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

Seems like a good article, try applying it to marriage. After all it too is founded on belief.

You are also from the "closed-mind" school, the "Unequal rights" school, "no progress" school. Why, you'd be at home at pre-civil rights times, maybe a plantation?

Go back to the Stone Age (though I doubt cave men and women would accept someone like you.)

I don't think he said there were no equal rights. Marriage should be a religious item. Civil unions a government item. That way everyone is happy.

Look around...did you see any mammals having sexual relations? I don't think so. Gayism is a learned behavior and I am afraid that it is being pushed in our schools as the number of Gays in our public schools is increasing in a frightening numbers. Could it be an easy target for recruiting? What people want to do in the privacy of their homes is not my business but it is when it is being pushed in my kid"s schools and in the media.

There are many examples of homosexuality in the natural world between various species of animals (Banobo monkeys, for example)...it is not exclusively a human phenomenon.

Consider these, one of which indicates homosexuality has been observed in over 1,500 species:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RlTAyNI8WE

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15750604/

"Gayism" (as you eloquently put it) is not a "learned behavior", however, putting up with continual ignorance and hetero-entitlement in a heterosexist society IS.

And who does more "recruiting"? What about pushing "straight" examples down the throats of our children...(and please realize that many gay people DO have children of their own). Thank God for "gays in our public schools", to let GLBT children know that you can be gay and be a respected, respectFUL, productive and responsible member of society. Conversely, just because one is straight doesn't mean they are a superior human being.

If you're against same-sex marriage, then the solution is very simple: don't marry someone of the same sex!

I grew up on a Dairy Farm... Cows (as in female) in heat, mount other cows and hump them... Lesbian, do you think? Many animals, especially Primates exchange "gay" sexual favors, for gratification and status... That's called Natural by intelligent people...
Try taking out your brain... Clue: It's that little B B sized object rolling around in your noggin... Whuff your breath on it... Clear the fog and dust off... See Life as Life is... Not through a FOG of Beliefs...
