SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is asking California members to join the effort to amend that state's constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

A letter sent to Mormon bishops and signed by church president Thomas S. Monson and his two top counselors calls on Mormons to donate "means and time" to the ballot measure. A note on the letter dated June 20 says it should be read during church services on June 29, but the letter was published Saturday on several Web sites.

Church spokesman Scott Trotter said Monday that the letter was authentic. He declined further comment, saying the letter explains the church's reasons for getting involved.

The LDS church will work with a coalition of churches and other conservative groups that put the California Marriage Protection Act on the Nov. 4 ballot to assure its passage, the letter states.

In May, California's Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, saying gays could not be denied marriage licenses.

"The church's teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and the formation of families is central to the Creator's plan for His children," the four-paragraph letter states.

"We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to ensure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman," church leaders say in the letter. "Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage."

California Mormons _ there are more than 750,000, according to a church almanac _ have heard and heeded similar calls from their leaders before.

In 2000, a letter from the pulpit asked members to give time and money in support of Proposition 22, a ballot measure prohibiting California from legally recognizing gay marriages performed outside the state. It passed but was later struck down by the courts.

The LDS church also fought same-sex marriage legislation in other states during the 1990s. As recently as 2006, it signed a letter to Congress seeking an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

The latest letter is a disappointment to members of Affirmation, an international support group for gay, lesbian and transgender Mormons. Last month, Affirmation called on the church not to meddle in California politics.

"This initiative will hurt so many people," executive director W. Olin Thomas said in a statement Monday. "The California law affects civil marriage; it has no effect on any religious institution or official."

Affirmation leaders are scheduled to meet with the head of LDS Family Services, a church social services agency, in August to begin a conversation meant to bridge the divide between Mormonism and gay members hurt by church teachings that homosexuality is a sin.

It will be the first meeting between any arm of the church and Affirmation, which was formed in secret in the 1970s by students at the church-owned Brigham Young University in Provo.

"We're not going to let this stand in the way," Affirmation spokesman David Melson said. "The church has said they are open to finding new avenues and new solutions to minister to gay members, and we are taking them at their word."

Same sex can't get married but a 50 yr old can marry a toddler. Hypocrisy all around folks.

I'm starting to think that if Churches want to interfere in political processes (Mormons and Roman Catholic hierarchy) on topics like contraception rights & access, gay marriage, etc., maybe we should re-examine their tax-exempt status

Personally, I'm looking forward to my 32 male virgins in heaven. I only have 31 right now here on earth.

I know LDS has renounced polygammy on earth. However, don't they still believe in it in the afterlife? It is my understanding that a woman is supposed to be with her first husband in heaven, but that a man can be with more than one woman if he was the fist husband to each. Does anyone know if that interpretation is correct?

Worthy Mormons marry in a temple for "time and all eternity". The belief is that marriages so performed will be binding in the next life. Thus, a man and woman married in a temple will be spouses forever.

If a man gets married in a temple, and then later wants a divorce (or the spouse dies), he is free to marry a second, or third, etc. wife in the temple. Thus, he can be a serial polygamist and have multiple spouses forever.

A woman, however, MUST obtain a temple divorce if she is to marry another man in a temple. She can only be temple married to one man.

If a woman is married to a horrible man and wants a temple divorce, she will not be granted one by the church unless she has another man she can marry in the temple. This is to prevent her from being "unclaimed" in the next life by not having a man to resurrect her.

Yes this is correct. Mormons believe families who are married in their temples enjoy the privilege of that same family association in the next life. They discard the "'till death do you part" or "as long as you both shall live" concepts from their marriages. The Book of Mormon contains the following passage related to polygamy, which in essence bans the practice in any general sense, and limits it to only specific circumstances:

Mormons have a right to vote however they please. They are not doing anything illegal by supporting this amendment to the state constitution.

You're free to disagree with them and, if you live in CA, vote your own conscience as well. The Mormon church goes to great lengths to remain politically neutral, and only rarely makes its stance on a political question public. But Mormon theology has substantive justifications for taking this position--well beyond Leviticus 18. Essentially Mormons believe in both a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother, and all human beings are literally their offspring. The purpose of this life is to become like God and God is not gay.

Most HuffPost readers think this is total nonsense, and have another worldview. Fine. But Mormon's aren't bigots, any more than anyone else who embraces a worldview that says A is good but B is bad. And they have a right to vote their consciences. Instead of slinging epithets and insults, organize yourselves and get out the vote to defeat the amendment. It's called Democracy, right?

The same arguements against gay marriage were made against interracial marriage. If the Mormon Church came out against interracial marriage would your attitude be the same. That it's freedom of religion to be bigoted.

A little history lesson, for "130 years (1848 to 1978) Mormon Church leaders taught, as official Church doctrine, that Negroes were the "cursed" children of Cain, that the Mark of Cain was a black skin, and that Negroes were "less valiant" in the War in Heaven (a battle between Jesus and Lucifer before this planet was created in which all human spirits were involved)."

What about this statement from the LDS First Presidency:

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints holds to the doctrine of the separation of church and state; the non-interference of church authority in political matters..."

Or how about this one:

"The Church does not interfere, and has no intention of trying to interfere, with the fullest and freest exercise of the political franchise of its members..."

Seems that this "urging" of members to donate means and time is direct interference. Friends who are members continually cite how the church tells them to vote their conscience. But isn't this statement tantamount to the church opening the door and ushering people toward this political decision?

Nobody is requiring the Mormons to perform gay marriages in their temples. If they want to to propose or change public policy that affects non Mormons, it is more than fair for people to explore how their beliefs will affect public policy, as well as make judgements about if it is good for society.

I'm confused. If "God" created all things, but "God is not gay", what's up with the over-the-top plumage on a male peacock?

PHOOEY ON YOU! Who can say God is not gay? Who can say anything about God or about any gods? Oh it was written...oh my what a bunch of suckers! "Believe Only Half Of What You See And Nothing That You Hear. Don’t Trust Any One At All." For sure people can believe what they want, but when religious fanatics or radicals OR ANYONE tries to tell me who I can love or not love then I say "phooey!" Phooey on them all! Whether it is a Mormon, or a so called Christian, or a radical Islamic or whatever - phooey on them all! We pay taxes like everyone else, we serve our country when we can get away with it, we work hard, we have families, we are family! Don't tell me my God is not gay, phooey on you! MY GOD IS PROUD TO BE GAY AND GAY FRIENDLY and my God and all of her/his God friends are gay friendly too. So phooey on you! Sincerely, America's Proud Gay Grandpa!

Can we just give everyone the right to marry already so that collectively under the rule of law we can all be equal in our immensely bitter divorces?

The LDS is hell (heck - my apologies LDS member) bent on getting involved with a move to ban gay marriage, BUT have side-stepped the issues associated with their breakaway sect known as the FLDS.

In the LDS eyes, gay marriage between 2 consenting adults must be banned, but an FLDS older man who is SEALED with multiple underage girls who were FORCED into this type of union is OK.

I would have respect for the LDS if they did something about the sexual, mental and physical abuse of young girls and women who just happened to be born into the life of the FLDS.

Let's not forget the LOST BOYS who are thrown out of the compound because they pose a threat to the older men who want the teenage girls for themselves.

The LDS have bigger fish to fry before they go after gay marriage.

Gee - our very own Taliban-lite decides to show it's little theocratic intentions.

Their 'fearless leader' was chased down and killed by a mob of Illinois citizens who couldn't stand their theocratic maneuverings....hence, they ended up waaaaaayyyyyy out there in the desert.

I would suggest members of this sect think twice - even thrice - about entering their RELIGION (protected by that little 501c3) into GOVERNMENTAL Business....

And I believe an IN DEPTH INVESTIGATION is due into MARRIOTTS (whole Mormon owned) and MITT ROMNEY and let's just see how far these people are embedded - WHY are the majority of CIA/NSA agents of the Mormon persuasion?

The Mormons won't be alone. The Catholic Church has already announced its support of the Constitutional amendment. Dobson's Focus on the Family has pledged and will spend millions in tv advertising to help pass the amendment. They are going to be spending money and working relentlessly toward their goal.

While California was definitely moving toward same sex marriage, the action of the Supreme Court overturning the 61.4% voter approval of Prop22 is not going to be viewed favorably. Instead of the results being a true referendum on same sex marriage, the issue will be cloudied by the claims of judicial activism. Or judicial activism could be the excuse anyway.
