James Hansen

Fox News:

Dr. James Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, sounded the alarm about global warming in testimony before a Senate subcommittee exactly 20 years ago.

He returned to the topic Monday with a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., given to the Worldwatch Institute.

"Special interests have blocked the transition to our renewable energy future," Hansen writes in an opinion piece posted on the institute's Web site. "Instead of moving heavily into renewable energies, fossil fuel companies choose to spread doubt about global warming, just as tobacco companies discredited the link between smoking and cancer. Methods are sophisticated, including funding to help shape school textbook discussions of global warming."

As the late Sen Moynihan (D-NY) frequently said, "We are each entitled to our own set of opinions -- not our own set of facts."

Not all CEO's are evil. But far too many will always choose short term quarterly gains and stock options to preserve the status quo rather than acknowledging the environmental hazards and damage that industrial Capitalism creates. Making necessary changes for the health and well being of the environment of the future requires courage and the potential disruption of quarterly earnings.
To a certain extent, we can't blame them. The Ken Lay's, Dennis Koslowski's, The Hunt Brothers, Anthony Mozilo, WorldCom, Enron, CountryWide, Bear/Stearns and many others.
These CEO's and companies are following the economic mandates of Capitalism which places greed and power at the citadel of virtue at the expense of everyone and everything else. Capitalism by its nature will always be hobbled with fraud and corruption, profiteering and price gouging, and the desire to lower quality, reduce services, inflate fees, and keep down workers wages and benefits.

Why? Because it is profitable to do so. As long as the focus of our economy is on short term growth and profit, we can expect that long term planning and consequences will be neglected.

I'm glad we got to hear some balance at the end of the piece from that nice man
Senator James Inhofe great conservative loyal man of oil and great friend to
Diane Feinstein and especially her husband the lobbyist. I don't like that nasty
liberal scientist fella Hanson whose always trying to make us go Commie
and redistribute our great countries wealth to those Godless Commies.

That's your typical conservative/Hillary voter "thinking" out loud.
A tribute to our educational system, no doubt.

I don't know if you noticed, but the past twenty years have already been the biggest redistribution of American wealth in history... from *us* to the CEO's.

Anyone involved in delaying climate action is committing a crime against humanity--potentially the worse possible crime against humanity there ever was.

Fine idea, arrest, try and imprison those with views you deem unacceptable. I'm surprised he included trials in the mix. We must be on guard against those who want to take our freedoms away.

Hansen is not accusing them of fraud. He's accusing them of high crimes against humanity. The sentence for that is usually death.

If my view is that I think it is fine to spray pesticide fog directly through your open window, I daresay that you would find that "unacceptable." Likewise, it is not their "views," it is their actions and efforts to delay and diffuse which put the rest of us in danger.

No one has the "right" to put others in danger -- especially an entire world. Just like no one has the "right" to yell "Fire" in a crowded theatre. Those who insist on doing so can and should be held accountable.

To falsely try to elevate disagreements over controversial scientific theory to the level of an immediate physical threat is at best disingenuous. Using this approach, all contrary political speech could be suppressed. The lack of understanding of the practical application of our freedom of speech rights is sad.

Think about it, the reason most people support the green movement is fear. Fear is their most important tool to gain public acceptance for their agenda. If we don't stop ......., we'll ruin the planet and we'll all die. Think about it, what sorts of movements have to depend on fear to gain acceptance? Environmentalists use fear to motivate, to trick the general public to give up freedoms the same as Bush used fear of terror to motivate people to allow his agenda. We should be extremely skeptical of any group using fear as tool to gain acceptance for their agenda. .

Our "leaders" did this to us. We are between a rock and a hard place and it's just about to get unpleasant and there ain't a thing we can do about it. Right when we need the energy the most, it will be gone. And even if we had it, burning it would only make things worse. Think global tsunami. All that CO2 we have been feverishly pumping without any remorse into our atmosphere will land flat on us, crushing the planet inhabitants, us included.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:58 AM on 06/24/2008

We don't need the energy nearly as much as people think. American's are wasting at least three out of ever four Joules they produce on vanity and poor infrastructure. This is not an energy crisis. It is a waste and vanity crisis. The climate crisis, on the other hand, will be real. Thirty years in the future many will be asking themselves how they could have been so stupid to waste so much, get so little in return and set themselves up for very unpleasant events to come. But then it will be too late.

Thirty years ago, I was in college, and Earth Day was born. At that time, the enironmentalists were all screaming about the coming Ice Age. Now it is global warming, or now, "climate change". It all seems very political and lust for control to me.

It sounds like he want's 'em burned at the stake following a lengthy visitation by the spanish inquisition. The parallells to this evnironmental stance to the dogmatic orthodoxy of extablished religion belies the supposed science on which it's supposedly based. This sort of adamancy can be disturbing and ultimtely lead to more chaos than the problem it attempts to remedy.

Name a person who's been arrested for having the "wrong" opinion.

You can't, because it hasn't happened. And it won't--unless we let people like Dr Hansen have control. It's obvious that he's lost his mind.

It is time to recognize some basic facts. Whatever one's position, the science is clear that recent climatic changes are correlated with changes in climatic norms and the enhanced variability of environmental extremes. The causal link may be blurred in some studies, but the correlation exists. Likewise, the most rational and sound scientific assessments (summarized in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report of 2007) project as a certainty ongoing climate change and changes in extreme events (i.e. more nature triggered environmental extremes) over the next decades. Human responses, especially our public policy and private decision making behavior, must lead toward renewable energy, more sustainable development, and the reduction of natural hazard risks. This must include significant investment in reducing vulnerabilities. This will not happen if the "special interests" (aided by public ignorance) continue to block our path to reason. i.e. Go get 'em Dr. James Hansen !

Absolutely: Try and sentence militant corporatists for global genocide for profit. Seven billion counts of murder, that is.

They are simply conspiring to kill our children by hiring prostitutes who willfully push the grandest fraud ever. This is way beyond the great cigarette fraud and conspiracy, because the Earth's inhabitants can't merely kick the habit. Their crime will doom our planet.

This is murder for money, and the Corporation's prostitutes know it. Obama has work to do, and the first item on the agenda should be the cessation of the murderous corporate conspiracy. I'm not talking fines, but mandatory prison sentences given with the same force as the result of any mass murder trial.
